Thanks Steven! I had the same issues with damaging the template. Sharpie is a good idea.

You may wish to use double sided tape to secure your wood. I've used it for many years after I realized the same issue you're having with blue tape.
Give it a try, you'll love the difference.
Also dust collection system is great.
    Good luck,
    Jim

James I will definitely take your advise on the double sided tape in the future. Thanks for the advice

I’ve made 2 signs. I used blue tape. They both came out nice. The issue I had was I’m missing the letter “G” I seem to have one part, but not the other. :-/ I made due with using a partial of another template. Looks a bit goofy.
    Thank for sharing this video

It would be a good idea to use a table that does not move.

What about tracing it then take template off and free hand it?

      Hello David,
Just curious if you have performed the operation you described above?
I would not attempt to remove the templates and free cut... why? the grain in the wood will take the router for a 'free ride' and well there you go ha ha...
I applaud you if you have these skill sets.

@@StevenLarkin I watched a CZcams video with Dave Rhoten he does it by spraying the templates on and free hands it,

I know it's 2 years ago. Sir, forgive me, I'm trying to help. You need to use the kit as designed. Why would you not? Have you ever free-handed a plunge router? Sometimes, it goes where it wants to go. Like when you hit a hard piece of woodgrain around a knot. If it goes off the 'line' a couple of times, the sign will look "off" and unprofessional. You need the templates and guide bushing to guide you. It keeps all the lines consistent with the pattern. Watching someone free handing a router versus free handing a router are 2 different types of animal.

Any tips for a starting depth?

    • @StevenLarkin
      @StevenLarkin  Před 2 lety +1

      Hello Will,
I recommend 1/4" for a starting depth. If you start too deep, a few things can go wrong real fast. the Router bit will take off in one direction or another!!! In this case, the second thing that can go wrong is you eat away your template. It is too easy for this to happen. The third thing is do NOT tilt your router in operation.
I would say in ending here, practice with the least amount of depth as possible with your first pass using the system.

Hi there I have just bought this router and 3-3/8 sign making kit but the guide Bush that comes with the signs doesnt for the base plate of the router what is it that I need many thanks

You haven't told me the size of your router, this would help...
Going to go out on a limb here... Are you attempting to put the bushing into your normal router base?
If so, then it will not fit. I hope you have a plunge router base
Glad to help but need more info
