I'm not sure what exact problems this rifle is a solution to (End of world scenario, military rifle, cool range option, etc.), but I have to say that I'm impressed with the simplicity and intelligence of the change-over design and how solid it seems. It reminds me of the feeling I get when I field strip a Glock - smart and simple.

Many thanks for Hickok posting this video. He covered the caliber changes really well. However, most of our customers don't by the gun for the caliber changes. They buy them for the reliability and the ergonomics. It feeds better, cycles smoother, extracts and ejects better because of its unique operating system. We did not copy the AR-15, we designed something completely better.

Love my XCR-M. Accurate out of the case and shoots any Ammo I put thru it. Got it in .308 and a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel I haven't tried yet. Shoots suppressed with deadair Nomad 30 like a dream. Put a trijicon vcog on it and after a 3 round zero I can't miss at 200 yards(farthest I've been able to test it out so far). My favorite firearm I own by a Longshot.

I've owned a XCR-L for a few years now, and I have a few thousand rounds of 5.56 through it. Overall it's a quality firearm, but not for everyone. Here's my experience so far:
    Cons:
I've had 3 firing pins break on me after 500-1000 rounds each. All of the firing pins broke in the same place, but Robinson Arms has fixed the issue by switching to a different firing pin design. So far I haven't had any issues with the current design, and I don't expect to based off the design.
Any XCR is going to cost over $2,000 new. Not necessarily a con if you consider the fact “you get what you pay for”, but it's still quite a bit of money.
    Slightly heavier than most ARs
Obviously XCRs are not as common as ARs, so ordering parts usually takes longer
    Pros:
Accurate and reliable. I cannot recall any malfunctions relating to the gun itself besides the broken firing pins mentioned above which has been resolved.
The controls take some getting used to, but I'd say they are an upgrade from the traditional AR controls. The mag catch/release is easier and faster to use, the 45 degree ambi safety is easy to manipulate, and the side charging handle is easier to operate (at least for right handed shooters)
My experience with RA's customer service has always been positive
    Adjustable gas
The trigger is excellent. Short and crisp
It's pretty easy to swap calibers if you're just wanting one rifle/optic setup
    Misc:
If you're going to attach accessories to the mlok rail you'll want to shorten the screws. Standard length screws are a little too long and will block you from completely removing the barrel. I believe RA will shorten your screws for you if you send them in.
The XCR has a higher height over bore than an AR. This will affect your traditional zeroes. A traditional 50/200 yard zero on an AR15 is more like a 70/200 yard zero on an XCR.
Some people love the stock on the XCR and some people hate it. The fact that it folds is nice, but I simply hate the feel of the stock in my shoulder. I replaced mine with a magpul stock using an adapter from Dlask Arms. It no longer folds, but it feels much better in my shoulder.

  • @nunyabidness9257
    @nunyabidness9257 Před měsícem +5

I have had my XCR since 2006, and it’s a mid-3 digit serial number. It has been extremely reliable, no trouble whatsoever. This was my first gas piston gun and to this day, even after getting into building my own AR’s for 2 gun with the fanciest of low-recoil parts, my XCR is still the softest shooting rifle I own. The design is very, very simple and you don’t need any special tools to work on it-and it LOVES cheap steel case ammo-I have put many cases thru mine. For most of it’s life, mine has had a TA33 ACOG on it and it’s probably the perfect optic for a general purpose rifle like this and is a good match for the practical accuracy of the rifle. If these were just a little more affordable, I’d buy an SBR version in a heartbeat.

certainly not a bad round by any stretch but its playing around in the 6.5 esque world. with things like 25-06/6.5-06, 6.5 creed, 243 win etc.. it was really a solution in search of a problem. there is entire books dedicated to wild cat cartridges like the 6.8 that failed for various reason, typically cost:performance to adopt vs more standardized rounds. the guys that used the aforementioned 243/25-06 the 6.5 was a natural progression due to brass and projectile commonality. and by that I mean we make our own cases, similar to the early days of 300ssk (now 300blk).
really it was doomed to fail from the get go. Unfortunately I have seen hundreds of wild cats effectively cease to exist for the same reasons time and time again.

What is nice about Robinson is they keep updating and improving too. I need to send the rifle to them to get it updated to current specs. They quoted me: New Trigger Part( $125), the new Bolt Carrier Group ($275), A new Gas Tube $45. A new Gas Block $125. This would bring the gun up to the current standard. If I want the new stock $275.00.

That said, the barrel changing portion really threw me off. Different baggies of loose parts to keep track of just to change the caliber is not meant for the field, but only for the shooting range IMO. Reminds me of how easy to change the barrel between .223 and .300BLK on a Steyr AUG in comparison. All those points about "triggers being propriatery" don't help either.

The longer I watched the more I like the XCR-L. Personally, I would prefer a charging handle knob that was more contoured, simply for a nicer appearance. Switching barrels without needing a tool would be nice as well. For 6.8, (SPC?), I changed over to LWRC Six8 which I love. Not sure I would go back to magazines by Precision, Anderson, and Duramag, which are the current choices that I know of since Barrett quit making their superior 6.8 SPC mags.

the problem with all these alternative calibers is that they are limited to the 57mm overall lenght allowed by the ar15 magazine.
I will be curious to see an intermediate plateform (rifle /magazine/cartridge), sized between ar15 and ar10, chambered with a true intermediate round, let say a 6.8spc cartridge lenghtened from 43mm to 48mm, with an overall lenght from 57mm to 65mm.
the increased volume of the case would allow to push a 100gr bullet at 3000fps and retaining 30rds mag capacity.

    • @off6848
      @off6848 Před 2 měsíci

There’s diminishing returns to sending a lower weight bullet faster
Lower sectional density is why varmint rounds explode against armor and barriers
It’s fine for target shooting but generally a heavier bullet going the same velocity is better overall
If you could fit a 48mm cartridge I would rather it send a 124 grain bullet at more like 2800fps than a lighter one breaking 3000fps

@@off6848 100gr is a good inbetween weight for an intermediate round.
since 77gr is the max for 5.56, 120gr is the minimum for 6.5 creedmoor. going with 100gr at 3000fps also allow reduced recoil.

Always heard this rifle was better than the SCAR. When the military was doing the contract/trials that the SCAR won, the XCR was involved in the same trials. The XCR lost due to some small technicality, and it really doesn't get the attention that it deserves.

It was rejected for not supplying the blank firing adapters.it was designed to use the standard GI BFA and that wasn't required until after the rifle was submitted. FN had supplied the BFA before it was required but Robarms wasn't allowed to send one in even though the requirement was changed after they had submitted the Rifle. Later I heard word that military just did not want the xcr to have a chance of winning as they were concerned about Robarms not being able to meet demand if they won.
