My grandpa gave me his love of flowers which he planted for his love of my grandma. He grew these dinner plate dahlias that were literally the size of a plate. His were near his outhouse which got some sun late day sun. The man had a green thumb without trying. From fruits to veggies and flowers. The yards were loaded with flowers. His dahlias and his roses were my favorites other than the daffodils which are my favorite Spring flowers.

I live in ocilla, Georgia. And I planted my dahlias a month ago and am now seeing the start of blooms. I wished I was a detail oriented person. I'm more fly by the seat of my pants person. I. Liked mixing my dahlias and planting them. Gives you a surprise.

Also good to know that the different dahlia species and cultivars can have very different cold hardy zones.

I live in the PNW and with cooler temps dahlias are fairly common. I love them as they help me to have color and variety after my Spring tulips and irises have finished for the season. I find that they bloom late June through early September with such great variety in bloom size, style and color. The fact that they are perennials is such a bonus.

Its important to note that the size of the tuber has no correlation to the age of the tuber/how productive the plant will be. As with most bulbs, the bigger the better, but with Dahlias, some just produce smaller tubers... I am also a pen & paper/ planner type of girl 🤣 I spend hours upon hours in the winter planning out exactly how many of each flower/veggie Im going to grow, exactly where Ill plant it, etc. I do it even more so now that I have my little flower farm.. I think its so beneficial, Even if you are not growing and selling things. I know of so many people that will plant 4 tongues 4 × 4 seeds then they even have room for because they are just Willy-Nilly planting seeds & Not taking into account how much space that plant is going to take up, And then also I think it's very important to do like you said, And take notes on how productive certain things are. If I can grow a tomato plant that produces 100 cherry tomatoes or I can grow a tomato plant that produces 400 cherry tomatoes, Id rather plant the one that produced 400! And as far as the pests, I have absolutely Noticed that there are certain crops are certain crops that the pests just destroy destroy every year and I I've come to the conclusion that it's just not worth me trying to grow them Because of how labor and time intensive it is..

Hi Jill excited for your adventure with Dahlias! I started mine last year and it has been quite a learning curve! I did not have a great year but I continue to learn in every step of the process! Starting into my second season after harvesting my tubers last fall and storing them I continue to learn what not to do! Enjoy every step of the journey and I will keep your adventures in prayer as I have come to learn there are so many factors that affect Dahlias from beginning to end! Stay positive, take notes and just remember it is all about the adventure! Best wishes dear sister 🌸🌺❤️🌺🌸

Hi, I have been watching your videos for over a year now. Thanks for your content. I am a second year flower farmer who researches everything! This is the first year we are potting dahlias and I received a lot of great information from watching Swan Island Dahlias' video about it. It is a very helpful video. It suggests potting the dahlias a few inches deep and covering the sprouts completely so the stems grow strong. I will be trying this. Thanks again. Happy Growing and God bless.

Wow! Sometimes ignorance is bliss. About ten years ago I bought a box of dahlias from Sam's club because they looked so pretty on the box. At that time I had only grown a few things from seed. So I bought this great big pot and some good potting mix (I only assumed it was good since Sam's was selling it 🤣) and just pushed those tubers down into the dirt not knowing anything about eyes or anything. I was surprised by the tubers themselves! And those dahlias bloomed and were beautiful! Thank you for this. I'm glad mine bloomed despite my ignorance, but I certainly wouldn't count on it always.

This is so exciting! I grew dahlias for a few years and then we moved to another state, so I gave my bulbs/tubers away. Mine were given to me by two of my students, seventh grade twins. After I grew them and dug the bulbs to take into a warm place for winter so they wouldn’t get too cold, or freeze, I realized they had almost doubled the amount I had planted! You will have lots to sell next fall or spring! I’m excited for you!

🙋hi from Scotland,hi Jill I have been growing dahlias for a few years now I have to lift all of mine just before the first frost end of October and dry them off and store for the winter when I bring them out I let them soak for a wee while and put compost in plastic crates and they all have tags on the I let them through up shoots and take a lot of cuttings from them we can't plant out in Scotland till begining of June last frost so not I long growing time before they all get dried out and tucked in and out away for winter but it is worth it good luck with them Jill that all look beautiful take care cheers 🍷 Anne Scott from Scotland 🌻🌺🌷

  • @kat1984

I live in zone 9 and it's so dry out in southern Arizona the tubers my mom's neighbor gave me dried out and died over the winter. The humidity is currently 9% with no chance of rain for months. I may try them again next year since they're some of my favorite flowers. I could probably start them now but the thought of trying to nurse a young plant through the next 4-5 months when it's well over 100 degrees every day is unappealing. I'm even holding off on starting tomatoes until the end of June/early July so the plants will be up and starting to produce flowers just as the temperature starts to get down below 95, they don't struggle quite as much. I lost quite a few tomato plants last June when it was between 105-121 every day and there just wasn't enough shade cloth to keep them from struggling. I'm mostly focused on heat-loving herbs and ginger for the hottest part of the growing season. I bought some fine mesh/ insect netting bags to try this summer and see if I can keep the cabbage looper/ crazy white butterflies out of my thyme and basil plants. The heat stress plus overabundance of little green caterpillars killed my 3 year old thyme plant. So far it looks like Amazon delivered the netting bags just in time, I saw the first white butterfly yesterday and the netting bags were secured last week. I try to avoid using any pesticides at all, even organic ones on the herbs I cook with on a regular basis. Do you grow ginger? I just buy the organic ginger root from the grocery store and plant them and they grow well every year. They tend to wait until it's been in the 90s during the day/60s at night before they shoot up and grow like crazy. I've never looked into other varieties of ginger but it may be a fun experiment, it was happy last year when it was 115 degrees with no shade cloth as long as it got water 2x a day. I honestly was planning on skipping a garden this year and just focus on sanseveria, spider, and zz house plants but growing herbs and having my hands in soil feeds my soul in a way that my knitting and spinning doesn't

Great video Jill.. I started a tray of dahlias from seed last month and they are just thriving..I pinched them all back and all the side shoots are growing amazingly..they are extremely easy to grow from seed, mine are now about 8 inches tall with really heathy full thick stems and leaves::: much cheaper than buying tubers..and I’m a zone 4b, but i have a pretty good set up going on in my house, I’m a empty nester so neither me nor my cat care that I’m starting seeds in my dining room lol
