    Thanks alot! I would note that if you're backing up a CT you need to give the NAS folder specific permissions or allow EVERYONE or you'll get a permission denied error.

    you should add a disclaimer for backing up LXC. The backup will fail unless you login on the synology NAS as the admin-user, "sudo chmod 777 -R /volume1/proxmox" .

    Wow you really helpmed me out with this video! I have one question though. What if your whole Proxmox server crasht (bad SSD for example) and you would have to restore from the automated backups from the synology nas; would you first have to create the VM's manually before restoring from the backup, or is it possible to restore VM's from snapshots without having to create the empty VM's itself first? Edit: I found out you can just go to your NFS share from proxmox, click the backup, choose Restore, and then start from scratch with the backup. This is awesome!

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 9 měsíci

      Nope! You'd just connect to the NAS storage and can then restore them. I've done it a few times in the past.

    What are the steps to backup an iso from Proxmox to Synology? I don't see any easy way to do this. Also, when backing up the vm, it places it in a folder on the Synology called "dump" in the Proxmox share. Is there a way to tell it to place it in the "images" folder (for example) in the Proxmox share instead?

      two things 1) ensure there is no space in shared folder name you created in the nas 2) if you arealso backing up lxc containers , then in the shared folder nas nfs permission options in squash -put map all users to admin (as LXC runs as unprivileged user)

    How come and you used nfs instead of iscsi. NFS requires sync (slower) writes

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 2 lety +1

      Mostly because for backups that run overnight, I don't really need the absolute peak performance (it's also a lot easier to set up than iSCSI), but you're absolutely right - I should have pointed out that you can use both.

      I think that Proxmox Backup Server would do that. www.proxmox.com/en/proxmox-backup-server
      However, with this option, you can't. The next best option would be to run an rsync from Proxmox to the NFS storage on your NAS (off the top of my head).

    Thanks for this video. I got this all working. But I notice every time Proxmox backs up on the Synology it does a full backup each time, no incremental backups. Isn't there a way to setup deduplication on the Synology NAS so all the duplicated is redudantly stored? I've done just two days of backups and it has already eaten up 67gb. AT this rate it will fill up hte NAS storage in no time lol.
    I wonder if I should try Proxmox Backup Server, I heard that does incremental backups. Would be cool if there was a way to run Proxmox Backup Server in a VM on the Synology NAS and use the NAS storage.

      Do you know exactly what is in the Proxmox folder on the NAS? If it's mostly backups (you can see the backups by clicking the node name, then backups, then changing it from local to the NAS in the top right), did you set a retention policy? If you didn't, it could be saving all backups which could be the problem.

      @@WunderTechTutorials First of all thank you for replying. I've just figured out that proxmox does not backup to nas but it backs up to pbs which is running out of storage. And I checked the proxmox file in nas and there is nothing that can keep that much storage. And for the backup which uses pbs storage, I checked the retention policy. It is set like keep last: 1, keep daily: 3, keep weekly: 1, keep monthly: 1, keep yearly: 1. I'd really appreciate If you can help me.

      1. Check to make sure the recycle bins are emptied.
      2. Check to make sure any snapshots you are using have correct retention policies and consider deleting old ones.
      3. Use the storage analyzer to determine where all the data is.

      @@WunderTechTutorials Sorry for the delayed reply but I really had to think about your kindness. A little background 1st:
      *Most CZcamsrs are pretty nice but shallow short-return folks. You definitely deviated from my youtube expectations.
      *My simple ultimate goal is figure-out the best/simplest wat to provide my family/relatives/friends/etc a web-server just like google offers. I've spent ~5years planning on it starting with doing it with a DIY server/linux (ex: now I have ~500 pages of research/implementation plan). I finally realized a turn-key applicance is the only pragmatic way to-go and I completed everyone available. Since what I want is mostly want/need is support & software apps ; synology is it. Match like MS Windows OS for the home, synology home NASes puts a simply/candy-coated interface on a nightmare of horrible complexity I just spent ~5years of brain-numbing researching on.
      *THE REQUEST: Create a few short KISS videos that any/everybody could understand/use but allows newbies (ex: my-wife) to buy, set-up, use, connect tech support, etc, etc as well as absolutely enjoy an inexpensive synology NAS. This is what MS Windows OS for the home does well ; why the OS dominants the home market ; & what synology is trying to do in the home market. For example one reason I married my-wife is she has little/no technical skill and hates all geeks/nerds (except me of-course, well most times ;). However I'm always amazed how you can use the MS Windows OS & have absolutely no-clue of how it really works at-all (ignorance is bliss ;). Of course if she really gets mad at MS Windows, she tells me to fix-it quick/now or she just buys another computer. I thinks I'll try her way of doing things (oh don't tell her she might have been right ;).
      PS: Oh Oh !DS2022+ or Bust!

    • @WunderTechTutorials
      @WunderTechTutorials  Před 2 lety

      @@tombouie I agree that Synology devices are generally harder to implement because Synology has good documentation telling you HOW to implement things, but not necessarily WHY you should implement them.
      For cases like this, I tried to create a universal "Synology NAS Setup & Configuration Guide" that brings people through the entire process: www.wundertech.net/synology-nas-initial-setup-ultimate-guide/
      With that said, it's still not "complete" in the sense that very few beginners would be able to fully understand what's being implemented and why (because as you said, these are more complex devices than would initially be expected). I will certainly keep that in mind for future videos and see what I can come up with!

    • @tombouie
      @tombouie Před 2 lety

      @@WunderTechTutorials Again most CZcamsrs are usually shallow/megalomaniacs but you're quite the polite/normal person (refreshing ;).
      Well I says with lots of experience under-your-belt it's fairly easy to find endless complex solutions to a difficult problem (ex: I gots over a ~500 page doc on my research about how to setting-up the perfect home web-server/NAS to replace google).
      Epic Rap Battle: Nerd vs. Geek czcams.com/video/2Tvy_Pbe5NA/video.html
      However at-best it's only a few solutions to a difficult problem that least complex, most practical, shortest-time, least amount of profanity/throwing-things, that my wife can easy use, etc, etc and I gets to use & move-on with my life.
      Here's a cool english-fellow that actually did what I was taking about with a Synology NAS. So I trying to follow his lead:
      How to setup a Synology NAS (DSM 6) Part 1: Familiarising yourself with a Synology NAS czcams.com/video/Yua6dGpg4qo/video.html
      When I gets my DS222+ (or Bust!) ; I'll mainly use his & your CZcams Channels for support.

    This is repeated for lxc 102
    I tried setting backups to "Stop". Same results.
    I tried doing a manual backup from the backup menus on one of the lxc guests and the Proxmox window shows the same error.
    I can't determine if the permission issue is Proxmox or Synology, but given that a logfile is created it would seem rights are in order on the Synology.
