Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
2. What are you studying? I'm a recent grad of Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program
3. How old are you?: Year of the dragon. :D The math is up to you.
4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8yylch
5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop). Additional cameras include GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Majic Air

I love Netflix but I wish they would include more variety outside of anime for the Japanese selection.
Terrace house is great on netflix and not anime
@Ryo Zero well aware.
At first I thought Japan just wasn't producing many dramas but I guess most of them just don't get put on Netflix? (And I mean even living in Japan)
@@moyga tbf ..japan drama not good enuf..juz wait for netflix original..
Cyber ghost😀
Problem with Netflix is that there is quite a lot of Geo-localization involved, maybe most of the shows suggested are only available for Japan (sadly)...
Have a great week and stay safe
For some people, there may be the option of using a vpn to change their location to Japan! But I'm not sure if this is an option for everyone.
Definitely! I found some of the titles were on Amazon Prime too, but basically if you just google the title the platform that IS hosting the title should show up!
Also, VPN is an option. You should have one anyways.
Yea so true
Some japanese shows are in Prime video.
When you want to add the shows in your watchlist but your local Netflix doesn't offer them 😭
French netflix is so mean
Life hack I learnt in China: get a VPN!
Netflix is incompatible with VPN
Sophia Sarafova not true! I have vpn and use Japanese Netflix although i live in the U.K.
@@sophiasarafova1584 I used a vpn to pay a cheaper Netflix subscription
“At least N2 level” 💀
I watch as much as possible in japanese, even if it's not at my level. Remember, babys learn through just absorbing everything around them. So the more you watch, the better!
@@LannasMissingLink Matt Vs Japan ehh?
@@Fun-rf9vs hah yeah! I use a lot of his advice
I highly recommend 深夜食堂 (Midnight Dinner). It has a lot of overseas fans, and everyone is now waiting for a new season. There is the regular series which was made for Japanese tv (no subs), and there is the Netflix series with subs. You're gonna love it!
I also recommend "the Naked Director ". Lots of sex, but Yamada Takayuki was so freaking awesome in this drama. There will be season 2, and we are excited about that.
I loved this show, I watched it all twice and hope for a new season. There is a channel on YT where the lady cooks the recipes from the show. So now I cook some of them at my home.
midnight diner makes me missing the senpai that i can never have, ugh my weak heart... being a prisoners of love
I'm loving midnight diner! I'm only N5 level but am able to enjoy it
孤独のグルメもいいよ
One of my favorite netflix shows! Highly recommend!
The Followers is a really good show! It’s well written, had a nice story, the usage of color in the show is amazing. I recommend it!
Jalen my mannnn
Our blessed CIR 🙇🏻♀️
Yesss! I loved the message it spread
I recommend "リラックマとかおる" (rilakuma and kaoru)!!
I wasn't a rilakuma fan before, but the show is made with so much heart, it made me a fan 😅
In the US Netflix, Terrace House is great for actual-use Japanese... and Samurai Gourmet is fun and foodie...
I wish Netflix would show these series here in Europe. Sounds great!
I'm not into teen drama types but I thought Switched was good
I cant wait to watch these over the next week of quarantine! Need something new and fresh ❤❤
1:20 #1.Docter X
4:35 #2. Free and Easy
6:12 #2.1.The man who can't get married
7:48 #3. What Did you Eat Yesterday
10:40 #4. Atelier
Can anyone suggest me a app (other than #Netflix) with big collection to watch japanese drama series.
I loved “million yen woman” 100万の女たち 👏🏻👏🏻
NHK in the US was playing 昨日何を食べたand man I agree with you, it’s such a good slice of life drama. It’s so relaxing, the dudes are adorbs, and the show is funny. It’s a must-see! Also, I’m not sure Netflix have this but オッサンズラブin the sky is another show I recommend 🥰✨☺️
Thanks for the recommandations! Netflix UK also has Giri/Haji, a detective thriller series that is actually really good, in a mix of English and Japanese .
so I never delved to jdramas yet so I'm trusting you this is a good introduction. I love anything that is a thoughtful and dynamic.
(I wrote the above before you said you'd recommend it to anyone)
Thank you so very much for these recommendations!!
I've watched Dr. X on VIKI, which I think is only for the U.S. Did enjoy watching and it has English subtitles to it.
Forgot the name of another one, but this one had a taxi driver in and his customers would go back in time and start all over again. this also had English subtitles, but found this a lot of fun to watch.
I enjoy watching your travel shows very much and just happened to stumble onto your channel by chance.
stay safe and healthy.
I didn’t know they’d made Kinou Nani Tabeta into a live action show!! The manga is amazing and some of the recipes are listed out in between chapters too
We've been using the Chrome plug-in Language Learning with Netflix and have been watching Doctor X (isn't the repetitive music totally addicting?) and other series on Japanese netflix. We haven't been taking any formal Japanese classes, but i feel like we've been picking up a lot of useful words and phrases. We'll often pause and then look up the words or phrases that they use a lot like "otsukare sama deshita" and it takes us down some interesting rabbit holes where we're curious to learn. it's fun and doesn't feel like studying. it feels more like understanding. Thanks for the context on "Gyoi!" and the other series recommendations. Please keep the recommendations coming!
Thank you for the upload! I always look forward to your videos 💗
深夜食堂 is on Netflix; each episode follows a different story from on of the regular customers that come to the diner... I am in the middle of this and am really enjoying it...
It's so good! The intro always makes me so emotional 😅
Thanks. DoctorX is available on Amazon Prime streaming service. Can't find the others mentioned but thanks for the tips. Most of the Japanese content on American Netflix is Anime.
Just tried to watch them the other day and it said video unavailable. Strange.
スペインではそのシリーズを見られませんが、推薦ありがとうございます!Thanks for the video, you helped make my day better. Hope you're okay!
i was thinking of 結婚できない男 and you mentioned it which is awesome! the newest season that had come out was not great either though. just season 1 is enough is a good recommendation.
thanks for sharing the other titles. will be checking them out!
I am following your advice and watching Doctor X now instead of running the streets of Tokyo tonight LOL. UPDATE. Good Choice. I don't usually watch television at all, but since I am deeply immersed in learning Japanese, I find it a good idea to listen to native speakers as I study. This series is funny and entertaining. I am adding the other ones to my list just in case this pandemic is longer than expected.
Wow thankyouu:))hoping not to forget Japanese staying at home and this came ❤️
I love all the Lily content we are getting in these "stuck at home" videos 😍
I'm recommending あいのり (Ainori). it's a reality show so the lines are unscripted, the japanese is more natural. I'm binge watching it and it's very entertaining and I get to hear reaaally casual, easy and informal talking while I wonder who is gonna end up with who.
Whooooh! You're pronunciation and your whole deal cheered me up 🤭🤭😆😆. Grew up in Japan and miss it✌️ Thanks. That's me in Japan in the 70s.
No one ever mentions Love Story Kyoto. I LOVE this show. It is simple and sweet but it’s so good! I keep rewatching it!
“Stay Tuned” is a new favorite! 💛✨
Thanks for the Netflix suggestions, Loretta. Be well & stay healthy.
Midnight Diner is another great Japanese show that's a Netflix orignal as well. It's these different stories of customers that frequent this diner that's open late. it's charming, the food looks amazing, and it's a great way to settle down before going to bed. 見るようにして下さい!
Midnight Diner is a little gem
thanks for your recommendations, Loretta! I went to check out Doctor X immediately and kind of blazed through S1 and 2 :'D I miss the cast and camaraderie of S1 and really hope to see some of them return..!
Definitely looking forward to the review of that Netflix app!
I love those opening lol, I totally loved and a big fan of doctor x, been following the drama ever since, and thanks for the other suggestion!!
Most of those you listed aren't on US Netflix; however if you google the name of the drama with English subs you can find it. I also recommend Hanzawa Naoki and Tonbi. Both great dramas.
Thanks for the recommendations! We just watched 37seconds on Netflix. It was pretty good and we'd recommend it if you havent seen it already.
I started watching Doctor X on your recommendaton...Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! Important things need to be said 3 times!
Thanks for the suggestions! :) I definitely relate to your thoughts on Atelier. I ended up giving up watching it. Nothing was really happening, the characters weren't evolving or going anywhere, it was just a really flat show. :/ Shame, because in the US, it's one of the few options of Japanese drama that we have on Netflix.
I put the Followers on in the background while doing other things at first but then started watching attentively after I noticed the plot was more about the conflict of a woman choosing work over a family and how a young woman navigates relationships and finds herself and her passion along the way. Also, the fashion! 😍
That 「メロンです、請求書です」was so on point, I can't help but watch it over and over 😂😂
Some other Japanese Netflix shows that I personally really enjoyed are Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories and Samurai Gourmet. Samurai Gourmet is cute and the old man is just an adoptable character as he's adjusting to retirement and his daydreams guide him to be more assertive and relax. Love the opening song for Midnight Diner I think it sets a tone for the show to feel homey and the shop owner kinda like a dad figure for some of his patrons. A couple corny episodes but I think that's more of a Japanese comedy kind of thing. Another mention would be Kantaro, the sweet tooth salaryman, but is a bit more on the corny side, think Shokugeki no Souma, orgasmic food adoration scenes. For me, it gets a bit much but is fun to watch every once in a while. Kantaro's character is that of a highly efficient salaryman who hides the fact that it's his sweet tooth that drives him so.
I have other Japanese shows on my list but... I haven't started them yet~
Tokyo stories is amazing! Found Samurai Gourmet as a suggestion after I finished Tokyo Stories. Both are wonderful feel good shows.
please recomend 3 Amazon prime from japan!! Love this video btw, I wish I had netflix tho :(
Thanks for this XD. I watched one episode of Doctor-X and she's my new role model. Love the character
A ⭐ Huge ⭐ thank you for all your recommendations. This was super helpful while my family remained "shelter in place". I found Doctor X one of the most interesting shows I have seen in a long time. Even my son (12) goes around saying “御意い” to me, but the “いたしません” has become a problem. We have finished season 6 and wanting more. I then found a 2-hour special Doctor X between seasons 3 and 4 that doesn’t seem to be on Netflix. Doctor X ~ Gekai Daimon Michiko ~ Sp. I did find an alternative way to watch. We are now watching TV shows staring Ryoko Yonekura. Have you started watching Legal V?
If you like Altered Carbon, the anime Altered Carbon movie that just came out on Netflix is good.
there is another good show that I really recommend it is on Netflix it is called "Good Morning Call" and it has English subtitles
Thx for sharing with us your top list of Japanese Netflix series but I am not sure if from Europe, I ll be able to watch them because of copyrights reasons or something but I ll check .... Oh by the way, hi from Vienna/Austria ... bye now and be safe ...
I really enjoyed Samurai Gourmet and Midnight Diner. They're both really short series, but very good ones.
I absolutely love きのう何食べた? the stories are often hilarious but very touching as well. As a gay person who lived in Japan for 10 years, I never expected such a show. All I ever used to see were okamas on TV. Another show I really like is 深夜食堂 Have you seen it? On Netflix, it's called Tokyo Stories: Midnight Diner.
I believe Atelier is available internationally (at least France and US) and I would recommend it ! It is one of those shows that are being filmed what I called "American style" and that is nicer than the 90s techniques of Japanese movie filming... 😉
P.S : pour les francophones, Anime-Ultime a sous-titré Doctor X (dispo en dl et streaming sur leur site) et Asian Drama Fansub a sous-titré What Did You Eat Yesterday (dl sur leur site, pas besoin d'inscription, juste bien lire la fiche :))
READ THE MANGA OF KINOU NANI TABETA!! its one of my favorites! i have all the released english volumes! thank god for vertical inc ♡ when i saw it had a drama i cried
I love Doctor X and Kekkon Dekinai Okoko, i don't know the other dramas but i can't watch them on Netflix from France :)
assuming you've already tried VPN; it seems that certain programs are added and deleted monthly if you come in from a Japan VPN proxy. Last month, a Japanese friend told me that they liked to watch "Criminal Minds" on Jpn NFLX; and yesterday, I tried to look it up; no longer on Jpn NFLX, only on U.S.A.; and w/ no JPN dubz or subz...
Followers is great. Love the cinematography and the OST is amazing
Thank you to Earthlinguist for English subs, and the anonymous poster who added FRENCH subtitles!!!
Heres the link to add more languages' czcams.com/users/timedtext_video?v=ZS5ooc_M-Tg&ref=share
For those of you NOT in Japan, I noticed a lot of these shows are also on Amazon Prime and other platforms if you look around. Happy binging!
Thanks for recommending doctor x... I'm now addicted..🙄🙄.. but it's brilliant.. and also a lot of it is formal .. good for learning japanese..いいおすすめ
I started watching 昨日何食べた and really enjoyed it but a few episodes in the plot started getting more complicated and my japanese level couldn't keep up haha I hope to watch it again sometime when I can understand more.
The TV show Boss starring Amami Yuki is one of my favorite shows back in the late 2000s
Alas, I can't watch any of the Netflix series you mentioned (I'm subscribing to Netflix, UK). I'll give VPN a go - but it really drags the speed of my broadband connection.
I'm currently watching 'Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman'. It reminds me of another mini-series called 'Ramen Loving Girl' (Amazon Prime). I always feel hungry after watching them.
I don't think Todome no Kisu is on Netflix or Amazon, but it is SO GOOD
ohhhh I loved the first season of Doctor X (especially the watermelon dude and badass michiko xD), haven't really got around to watching the rest of the seasons
Watching Doctor X from the Philippines. Thank you for recommending this. Take care!
never clicked so fast XD I NEEDED THIS 👏😭♡♡♡♡
Followers is not great, but it is above average. I agree with you about Atelier.
Recommendations (Jdrama on Netflix):
+ Erased - excellent live-action adaptation of manga/anime... murder mystery with a bit of time travel
+ Million yen women - hard to describe drama starring Radwimps’ singer, Yojiro Noda, who turns out to be good actor and is not a pretty boy
+ Stay Tuned! - silly miniseries comedy about an aspiring, but overly goofy reporter... too short, but a nice bit of fluff
Doctor X reminds me of Team Medical Dragon, a Japanese medical drama series...the plot and etc...
I just found both your channels out of random and I'm loving binge watching all your videos!!! Love the relaxed, chill vibe of your videos! Also that Garfield long sleeve😍😍😍!!!
I love this garfield sweater too much 😂
Thanks for the recs!
@KemushiChan I’ve been getting Japanese programming (Disclaimer: I’ve created my Netflix account while I was in Japan). I’m messing with Carol & Tuesday, Followers and Smoking.
I've been watching all the episodes of "House, MD" in sequence.
Velvet on Netflix. It's Spanish. I watched it a while ago, but the Fashion 😍
We've been debating between getting Hulu and Netflix for a while now. I like documentaries, so I've been leaning towards Netflix, but my partner is all about those J-dramas, and it seems Hulu has more of a variety and original shows?
I just found out that きのう何食べた? is going to come back as a movie!
I see a Switch in the background (and that adorable Kirby plush)!!! Are you playing Animal Crossing - what are your favourite games?
At the moment... Overcooked 2 😂😂
I started watching Followers expecting it to be bad, but I gotta give any jdrama on Netflix a chance. It completely blew me away. My boyfriend friggin cried over one of the last episodes lol. I'm not exactly happy with how it ended, but it's definitely worth watching
Hi, I don't speak Japanese and I don't get Netflix but could you provide a link for Doctor X pics of her clothes, doesn't need to be the actual show I just want to see still pics Thanks
五年前のお母さんとの動画から来ました。日本のドラマ紹介ありがとうございます😊是非観てみます。
1. Terrace House boys and girls in the city
2. Terrace House aloha state
3. Terrace House people go camping?(I haven't watched this one yet lol)
You're welcome
Those are Korean though I think
Loretta, this is the first time I found your channel and you are fantastic, authoritative, and engaging! I have subscribed and will check out your other channel, too. Your description of Kinou Nani Tabeta made me immediately think of TabiEats (YT, gay couple in Tokyo).
I don’t have Netflix but one of my favourite Japanese series is Gokusen which I watch in Japanese on CZcams.
I recommend The Magic Hour (Mitani Koki film) too. :)
I'll second the Kekkon Dekinai Otoko; season one on NFLX is from ten years ago; and was really great. The second season, ten years later both in the story and in real life, aired recently and isn't on NFLX yet. Does anybody reading have a way to access Season 2 online, pay or otherwise?
Actually, that show really hits close to home for me. That guy is so much like me; around 40, professional, successful but socially awkward, lives alone in a decent apartment, cooks; I was immediately drawn into the story. So; you could imagine the shock I experienced when it showed him going into his doorway and the apartment number is #502; and that's my apartment number; it's like the heavens were trying to send me a message or something.
Omg! We watched season two on Amazon Prime
@@kemushichan Simple enough! Thanks for the info!
Silly question.. Is Netflix different in Japan than in the States? I cannot seem to find any of the shows you have referenced...
(バカな質問なんですけど、アメリカと日本のNetflixは違いですか。紹介してくてた番組をみつけられなかったんです。)
Highly recommend Giri/haji on Netflix and Tokyo Girl on Prime!
Netflix、自分はスタートレックのスピンオフにはまってます。ボイジャー、ディスカヴァリーなどです。どちらも女性が主役の男前なドラマで面白いです。
I recommend Nankyokuryourinin. you would like this type of comedy movie
I actually really liked Kekkon Dekinai Otoko. I'm really biased because I like Hiroshi Abe's movies!
You should check out Switched and good morning call if you haven't seen them
Number 3 is call "He Who Can't Marry" on Netflix.
Thank you, Loretta!
ah yes. ive binge watched doctor x during the holidays and i plan to watch the latest season soon.
Just have to say thanks for this. Husband and I picked up Doctor X per your recommendation and are just starting season 4 today, it's so much fun!
GYOI!!!
KemushiChan ロレッタ メロンです :)
@@NyalaDescoudres 請求書です!
Doctor X is addicting af, very worth the watch and it's satisfying too!
doctor x is the best japanese drama i have ever watched. i still miss this drama TuT
Naked Director is my favourite one for the moment, it's so funny
OMG it's soooooooo goood!!
Thank you very much!!! I can't watch it at Netflix but I will watch it at KissAsian
Any of those are available in my Netflix (Brazil)
Sad
I want that Garfield top!!! 😍
Honestly, we should add more Japanese drama in Netflix. Better ones like "La Grande Maison Tokyo", "Daytime Shooting Star", "From 5 to 9" etc.
