    Lovecraft missed argument:
When it comes to followers and powers, it’s MUCH better to follow the Lovecraft gods.
With the chaos gods, you pay a price for power. With the Lovecraft deities, it’s usually someone else paying the price.
You don’t become a deep one, you sleep with a deep one and that’s your progeny’s problem.
Usually the price that comes with following the is the curse of knowledge.
The mind breaking reality sets in and you’re confronted with things you can’t really understand.

I hate the Chaos gods because they're not chaotic. We don't see their followers doing what we would see as good. Heck, we don't really see anything beyond a simplified version of their emotions. You know what I want to see? I want to see a world where a greater demon from each of the gods works together to run a world filled with mortals. Where the bloodthirster trains the armies, a Great Unclean One is all about the environment, a Lord of Change runs the politics, and a Keeper of Secrets is in charge of the economy.
Or have Nurgle invade a world after a virus bombing and turn it into another death planet. A bloodthirster running a fortress world. A keeper of secrets having their own spy network and a Lord of change working in a manufactorum.
Chaos is presented as the great enemy, but that's boring. Chaos should always be working towards goals that we mortals don't always understand. We should have demonic planets that are amazing places to live just as we have demonic planets that are horrible to live. Chaos works best when it contradicts itself. Have the chaos warriors and chaos mortals be the great enemy. Have the rest of the warp be like kids playing with toys. There is logic there, but it doesn't always make sense to us.

Warhammer Chaos gods desire you to know their existence. The knowledge that Lovecraftian gods exist rends the sanity in twain of those who understand they exist. Defeating the Chaos gods in Warhammer is a possibility, whereas the Lovecraftian gods succeeding in an inevitability.
Lovecraftian gods are on another level, which, in a way, makes them less dynamic in a setting.
You can defeat the forces of Nurgle/Slaanesh/Tzneech/Khorne/the Horned Rat and even the gods themselves, thus there is hope, however small, in a long term brighter future.

    @petra4385 Před rokem +7

Alright I am writing this on friday and as per tradition (is it a tradition yet?) of my trying to see who can beat the shit out of who in your debate videos I will try and compare the Chaos Gods to the Cthulhu mythos. If I wanted to do a cop out I’d just compare the 4 gods together against Yog Sothoth but that’s boring. I will go into detail as to the cosmological shit…. It will be painful as this is comparing outerversal realms to outerversal realms here and I’m pretty sure if I could give a truly detailed explanation I’d join one of the pantheons or become a gator or I’ll suffer a fate worse than whatever the fuck happened to Collin’s beta cells. There’ll be a TL;DR at the end too.
First off a big misconception I have to clear off. Azathoth is not dreaming everything up, this isn’t fucking skyrim, there’s no real interpretation where he does either as Yog Sothoth is meant to be the entire mythos and is stated to be above Azathoth on many of occasion. So sadly the Cthulhu mythos does not get the trophy of world’s most ridiculous cosmology by having an outer-outerversal entity
Now there’s 2 ABSOLUTELY outerversal realms in 40k/AoS/Fantasy and in the Lovecraftian mythos. The Warp and the Void, which is inconvenient for me, is where both pantheons reside. The problem with scaling higher scale outerversal characters like the gods of both pantheons is that technically we can’t actually comprehend or even understand an actual difference in strength if such a thing exists. So we have to argue dumb shit or compare their weaker forms in reality or their followers’ strength.
For the cancerous stuff, the warp is technically manipulatable by non warp entities which COULD be argued to make it in some part like lower on the outerversal scale but then you realize that the things that can influence or damage them are beings connected to the warp via their souls like living beings or the endless minions or creations of the C’tan which have made outerversal tier tech that is outerversal with STUPIDLY shittier power sources (the breath of the gods nearly wiped out the concept of the galaxy from reality in every universe within the 40k timeline while only running on a C’tan shard). OR by a humanity that was described by an AI as “on the brink of ascension” (vortex weaponry somehow doesn't allow for daemons to enter the material realm despite making a warp rift and it then FUCKING CLOSES IT BY FORCE without any apparent blackstone involved) ascension only being used in the context of the C’tan, becoming a C’tan tier entity, the Old ones and becoming a warp god…. So that becomes moot as fuck once looked into detail.
So now we’re left to deal with the avatars of the gods or entities they possess OR their champions and it’s all downhill for all but 2 of the entities in the Lovecraftian mythos. There’s 2 things that would count as avatars for 40k, Malice/Malal being summoned by his chaos warband which I THINK blew up a planet, I have a distinct memory of that but couldn’t find the source OR the greater daemons… I’ll be doing the greater daemons since there’s significantly more scaling for them, I’ll also talk about the more juiced up followers… by that I mean Abbadon and Archeon because they’re the closest thing we have to a collective avatar of all the gods combined
Right, the legit straight up physical manifestations of the stronger Lovecraft gods have to wait a good while before they can go ahead and blow up a planet. Greater daemons are seemingly built different if compared to the Lovecraftian dudes. As they’re at the very least comparable to the primarchs who are probably maybe kinda FUCKING DWARF STAR TO STAR LEVEL. This is because of 2 assholes in 40k scaling, Ferrus Manus and Eldrad Ulthran.
Eldrad is compared the pre fall Eldar by a phoenix lord calling his power “not seen since the fall” said pre fall Eldar being said to ahem “Quench and forge stars” with the old elf fighting Fulgrim and losing when he was WAY younger AND Ferrus probably killed a C’tan shard with a transcendent C’tan shard of the deceiver of around 4-5 C’tan shards (the weakest C’tan like physically mind you) ahem “whipped 6 planets” in “The Infinite and the Divine” which kinda implies just fucking blowing them up in a near instant.
Which is funnily enough not quite planetary level but DWARF STAR LEVEL as planetary is turning a world into an asteroid field while dwarf star level is more just eviscerating planet or blowing them up super fast which in my personal opinion would include “whipping them” into the past tense. Mind you this would be younger Ferrus, without his power armor or weapons so… yeah.
Is think this dwarf star level stuff is applicable to Ferrus since a singular shard would do the same but to 1 planet instead of 6. A smol thing though. Being on dwarf star level doesn’t mean you can blow up a dwarf star now. It’s more a judgment of the energy behind a punch so think of the strikes like bullets, a bullet with insane kinetic energy hit a building the bullet doesn't spontaneously combust it just goes through the building. The C’tan shards can choose to have the same kinetic energy in a bomb so to speak
Being comparable to that makes Greater Daemons significantly more powerful than what Lovecraftian gods’ avatars are shown to take a fucking while to get to in strength. Now for Abbadon and Archeon. Abbadon is in a similar situation to the greater daemons but just straight up fighting an older version of Eldrad and contending with the man in melee not casting spells but still. Archeon is a bit… himself. He (depending on interpretation of the end times) might’ve had the day job of blowing up universes as his day job before AoS and after Warhammer fantasy which would make the case for the Lovecraftian gods even worse since their avatars aren’t known for doing that by themselves. To add to this a very middling god in the pantheon known as Cthulhu had his avatar be momentarily stopped by a regular ass big fucking boat… so yeah.
There are 2 entities that this doesn’t handicap known as Azathoth and Yog Sothoth. Azathoth is currently sleeping and every entity beneath him AKA everyone that isn’t Yog Sothoth has to actively keep it asleep as they’re seemingly worried of it waking up. Scared even. So it’s very likely it’s considerably more powerful than any of the entities which to me sounds like he’d be able to dunk on at least ONE of the gods… then there’s Yog Sothoth who is the entire fucking setting of the Cthulhu mythos which would include THE VOID aka basically the equivalent of the warp. Mind you the 4 have taken over most of the warp from what we can tell but the fact that ye olde entities like individual Aeldari gods and the C’tan during their peaks and probably some old dark age of tech human super weapons would dunk on the 4 collectively (we know this since Khaine after losing ALMOST EVERY SINGLE ONE OF HIS FOLLOWERS in 40k was able to contend with individual chaos gods which would mean that peak Khaine worshiped by countless Duodecillions of Elves would be above all 4 together).
The only thing that might contend is like Tzeentch when he was at his peak in 40k before he got shattered and Slaanesh right after their birth but I’d rather not get into that and I’ll just say it’s likely those 2 versions of Tzeentch and Slaanesh are comparable and would likely lose power quickly because Tzeentch wouldn’t want to win and Slaanesh WOULD DEFINITELY NEED TO FOR THE SETTING TO HAPPEN since it with every Eldar soul in it’s digestion system would be frankly too strong for any individual entity in the setting. With the Slaanesh thing maybe not even being THAT strong since it might’ve wasted lots of the power of the souls via being born as the other 3 were born from a multi million long war in heaven so it might just be harder to make a god via something shorter like 5K years of kinky sex or a singular orgy, so like consistency mattering a lot more than raw power…… or maybe it wasted them to get on a cocaine like high??? So it’s a bit fucking contentious.
TL;DR: Yog Sothoth would probably dunk on all 4 combined, Azathoth would dunk on at least one and the rest are kinda fucked.
For Yog Sothoth something more interesting would be the super weapons or gods during the peaks of all the species in the setting be it in the war in heaven or during the dark age of tech (since that’s when humanity and the Eldar’s peaks were). Since they're far above the current 4 chaos gods combined.

I speak my opinion, I prefer the chaos gods for I find the inability to fight back boring, I simply don’t care for over arching elder gods who can distroy you by blinking, I prefer the possibility of fighting back, despite how powerful the chaos gods are in there respective setting you can fight back against all odds and have a slim chance of victory, from my eyes the works of H.P lovecraft instil a sence of nihilism within me, there are beings of ultimate power and all is futile, while in warhammer you can make the choice to stand up and fight without it being pointless, you can choose your destiny to stand against the gods in warhammer witch I prefer hevaly, it may just be my opinions but still.

Funny thing...all rules of physics in all realities and dimensions exists in Cuthulhu Mythos are the result of the DRUMS AND FLUTES PLAYED TO AZATOTH SO IT CAN CONTINUE TO SLEEP.
Cuthulhu does NOT sleep in his city. His real self is quite awake and in the Void the thing that got hit by the boat was an avater CREATED FROM THE VOID.
And Cuthulhu is a small fry compared to ACTUAL Ultimate Gods.

Hal just made better arguments. I think Eli missed a step here, though.
Sure, the Lovecraftian Gods are in an absolute sense, more powerful than the Chaos Gods.
The Chaos gods are a big deal in the milky way galaxy, but try to wrap your head around the scope of the observable universe. Superclusters and cosmic supervoids and stuff. Try to apply the Hubble or James Webb deep images to the portion of the sky they cover, and then consider that the observable universe may be an infintesimal fraction of the true universe, and the notion that Azathoth can just turn the whole thing off with a stray thought. *Will* do so, inevitably, and will attribute no significance to having done so.
BUUUUT... so what? What does that mean in practical terms? What does that actually mean to you? It's one of those million things so far beyond your control that you don't need to bother to think about it.
The chaos gods though? They are embodiment of things like the desire for pleasure, for accomplishment, of anger, of the fear of death and pain, of the desire for things to be some way other than the way they are. As more limited embodiments of very human emotions and concepts, the Chaos Gods can *not* be ignored. These are notions and feelings which a human can not escape.

As a narrative device, I don't see the sheer detachment of the Cthulu Mythos as a positive. With the gods being so old and powerful, they really don't do anything in the stories, whereas the Chaos gods are always a threat, and often an incredibly insidious and manipulative one. The Chaos gods can turn you into the very thing you sought to destroy without you realizing; anything positive can be twisted into damnation.

    • @Honyi1

With the Lovecraft gods, it's best to see them as forces of nature, Cthulhu isn't a villain, narratively speaking he's the hurricane, you do your best to hunker down and survive him as he passes. but theirs just something realatable with that fear of the unknown, that we have no concept of how powerful and terrifying these things truly are and how small we are compared to them. the idea that our minds are so weak and fragile that simply looking at them would send us into a spiral of insanity.

He is arguing against his own premise. he is very confident about it too 😂. he perfectly summed up why chaos is much more frightening

  • @djangofett4879
    @djangofett4879 Před rokem +2

the lovecraftian threat does not come anywhere close to the threat posed by chaos. the fact that chaos spawns from humanity's suffering and seeks only to amplify the suffer which spawned them makes them much more terrifying than some distant entity that doesnt even care we exist. the threat from chaos is immediate and tangible. losing your mind is still not as terrifying as being turned into a pile of rotted decay in a matter of seconds or being torn apart like a paper bag by just one of a giant army of blood thirsty demons.
what is the world's scariest movie in your opinion? one that really get under your skin and makes you uncomfortable. now imagine a rabid doberman that is attacking you and biting gouges into your flesh. on a conceptual level, the movie is probably scarier but the rabid dog is scarier in a tangible way. would you rather live in lovecraftian universe (just avoid weird little towns for the most part and you'll be ok) or would you rather live on a 40k hive planet which is becoming tainted by chaos? I'd pick lovecraft universe. seems cozy by comparison
Lovecraft= ooh, im afraid of the dark
40K = even if we might survive the chaos, the inquisition will still blow up the planet, we are completely f***ed
