  • Watch and learn while I install the VRSF 7.5" Stepped Race Intercooler (FMIC) on my 2008 BMW 135i N54. I will show you the tips and tricks so you can DIY at home.
    Please note: this modification requires permanently altering your car. Check with your local rules/restrictions before attempting.
    This is installed on a 1 Series, however BMW 335i would have a similar application too.

    There's plenty of vids of intercoolers, like Wagner that don't require any trimming because they are made to fit... Or because they're on N55s.

    • @ElliottBrooks
      @ElliottBrooks  Před 3 lety

      Yeah they’re also smaller. This is a 7.5”. The largest Wagner is only 5.9” approx

      Yeah N55 may be different. This one is valid all the way up to 1000hp (if I ever go the single turbo route). It is heavier than Wagner but costs a fraction of the price

      I don’t actually have the undertray. My car was missing it when I purchased it - I can see how it may interfere. Did you add the plastic spacers at the connection points? I’ve heard that makes it worse

    • @emilyhofland8219

      Mine did too. You have two options... Cut or remove the lower plastic from your cooling stack. It is contacting at the rounded front edge of your step on your intercooler. If you notice, you still have like 1/4 inch gap between the two. Not all these n54's are fitted the same. I guessing yours, is like mine. (08 535i sport, factory lowered suspension 24" in the front 24.5" in the rear; measured from the center of your rim to the edge of your fender. An added thrust arm to the lower control arms, and a better transmission, those details are the easy way to tell the sport from the others). If you have this, make sure the people doing your alignments know, cause it's got different specs and procedure. It's actually easier, cause it doesn't require weights.
      What did. Using a jack stand and a lift, (at work). I forced it up an inch, forcing my cooling stack up too. It's a bit tighter getting my top radiator support resecured. But it works. It's clear of my carbon fiber hood, and sets just above my bumper/shield. They are touching. But it's a perfect fit on bottom. Which is where I'm more concerned about hitting something.
      Feel free and follow-up any questions. I'm a bit of an expert on this car, and I'm the mechanic on it. People with modded cars, in my area, come to me to get maintenance and repairs. Because my car is a fucking monster. ( I assume).

    The 7.5 weighs ten times the stock unit. Are the existing mounting points up to holding the extra weight?

    • @ElliottBrooks
      @ElliottBrooks  Před 3 lety +1

      Good question, and this is something I was worried about initially but I haven’t had any drama and these intercoolers are ran all over the world. I guess they get some extra support from the pipes too. Regardless - it’s working and I’ve had no drama

    I recently did this on my 08 535i. I was suprised to find that the intercooler coming out, was upgraded. Idk if this factory or not. But it's a solid steel construction (no plastic sides to blow out). It's just factory intercooler sized.
    I'm keeping it, at minimum, I bet I can sell it.

    Do you think a 5 inch intercooler would have been a better option? 7.5 seems a little overkill to me. Thoughts?

    • @ElliottBrooks
      @ElliottBrooks  Před 2 lety +2

      Probably easier to install. Bang for buck this is better and then if I one day go crazy with a single turbo build, I’m sorted. If you have no ambitions for wild builds, definitely go smaller haha. It will weigh less too

      @@ElliottBrooks Thanks, yeah, I'm not thinking of track days, it'll be my daily. So, stage 1, charge pipe, walnut clean. plugs and an AFE cold air intake for starters. Maybe a 5 inch intercooler next time. What's your take on oil coolers?

    • @ElliottBrooks
      @ElliottBrooks  Před 2 lety +1

      @@joshjoshspangler I would say if you’re not tracking it that an oil cooler is probably overkill. If you don’t have index 12 injectors, look into those. I’ll be doing a video on them, coils and plugs shortly once I get around to it!

    • @emilyhofland8219
      @emilyhofland8219 Před rokem

      @@ElliottBrooks I second this. But... I like the sound of the big boy though. Adds a bunch of turbulence-sound to the already, very audible sounds from the intake. The 5" is waaaay easer to install. But the 7.5 goes to the very top of my crush bumper. A little bit of weather stripping to ease contact. And I use the crush bumper in my mounting to help keep the intercool still. The reason for this... clunking sound from my front end, make me think I I have a suspension issue.

    • @emilyhofland8219

      @@joshjoshspangler You already have an oil cooler. Two of them. One in your cooling stack. And one at your oil filter.
