  • King Edward I once said that 'he who holds Pontefract, holds the key to the North'. That alone is evidence of how historic a town Pontefract is, and one of the most fascinating in all of England, with a history including the Romans, Vikings, Normans, the death of King Richard II, the English Civil War and the world-famous production of liquorice!
On our walk around Pontefract, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including the Old Town Hall, Market Place, Market Hall, Buttercross, St. Giles' Church, Ducks & Green Pease Row, Beastfair, Cornmarket, The Merchant's Warehouse, Pontefract War Memorial, former Magistrates' Court, Haribo Factory, Liquorice Way, Shoemarket, Pontefract Museum, Salter Row, Ratten Row, Woolmarket, Magna Carta Memorial, Pontefract Town Hall, Horsefair, Micklegate Square, The Barbican, Pontefract Castle, Kirkby Anglo-Saxon Church, All Saints' Church, and about a thousand pubs along the way!

Good evening! And welcome to this walk around one of my favourite towns in England - Pontefract! Absolutely packed to the brim with history on every corner, a walk around Pontefract is as enthralling as an ancient city like York or Canterbury!
But with so much history to explore on its streets, we weren't quite able to fit everything about the enthralling story of Pontefract into this one walk. For instance, we noted just how many pubs there were in the town, but why is this the case?
Well historically, pubs were built to cater to both locals and those visiting the town on market days, but it was also the development of Pontefract Racecourse, a horse racing venue on the edge of town, that helped spur the opening of even more pubs in town, with races still taking place throughout the year on the track, and people packing into the town's pubs!

The bird sculpture was part of a project for those in high school back when I was there. It was a competition to make a significant sculpture relating to Pontefract and the best one to be pitched would be made~ They're pigeons 👌

Impressed! I had no idea about what an interesting place Pontefract is. I was quite shocked and delighted, as I am considering moving nearby.

Grew up here as a boy before leaving to make my fortune! Back now in nearby Thorne but without my fortune!! Very relaxing place to shop and just sit around. Remember counting thirteen pubs in Pontefract. I have been told there was more! Lovely film. Thank you for the trip down memory lane!

You mention the Romans in Pontefract. There is a building not far from the castle, the cellar of which has a small section of cobbled road which I was told was Roman in origin.

My home town of Castleford is a Roman settlement. Which is the town next to Pontefract.

    "Jillygate"? Oh dear....
This is the problem with outsiders trying to pronounce unfamilair places.

14:30 - Why was the name considered inappropriate? Sounds a very ordinary name Blackamoors Head. * EDIT: Just did a search and noticed it was the usual Beee Ell M nonsense. 💩🤡
