1989 (9 years old), walking into the kitchen of my mate's house and there was a well used looking Bigwig sat on the worktop. Will never forget that moment and being stunned by its looks. Iconic buggy of the 80s!
Love this comment 😍😍😍
Always wanted one. I remember drewling over these in the catalogues back in the day... when all I could afford was a Lunchbox. 😍
Yes we were all in that boat my friend 😊👊🏻
body shell was one of a kind when it came out... loved it.
I must get one. One of my most nostalgic ones . Seeing the big boys driving one with the 8.4v and 9.6v batteries on the technigold. It was rapid.
This is the first I’m hearing of people not liking it. This was the Ferrari of its time in my mind. What a beauty!
1985 golden age of RC they're all cool cars and have characters.
chi luong
Agreed my friend 🤩👊🏻
Glenn thanks for the shout-out. You truly are a legend mate 👍
Lee Hurst
Excellent I’m glad you’ve seen it my friend 😊😊😊
I'm with you Glenn - it is a BEAUTY!!
Yeah the tamiya bigwig is one of my favourite 4wd vintage buggys too. I have the re-release too. My opinion its, the king of the hotshot series. It has such an iconic tub shassis, compared to its predecessors. And I love the steering rack system its just awesome. Only thing is assembling the gear box to mount the motor is very tricky. Also I recently purchased a terra scorcher 2020 re re. Love that buggy too. Can't wait to build it. Great unboxing. Thanks for sharing!! 👍
Thanks as always for watching my friend 🤩👊🏻
I was never a huge fan but now I would love to have one
You're starting to convince me that these look good, ha.
Excellent 🤩🤩🤩
I love the wiggy!! A very popular kit back in the day
A Stolk
Thanks for watching and commenting my friend 😎👊🏻
I like it, but I love them all. Even my wife's getting into the the Tampa stuff.
Excellent 🤩🤩🤩
my absolute holy grail care when it came out... 8.4V batteries... fast as hell and 4wd.... that thing was freaking fast and made me the hero of every rc car meet when i was a boy..... loved it..... unfortunately 2 weeks later went full speed into a parking sign and on the other side were just parts and screws.. the only time i went home crying with a bag full of brocken rc car parts in a plastic bag. good old days...
Tom Landolt
Great comment and I can totally relate to it Tom 😎👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends thanks man :)
I was there on release day at Mick Charles Models, bursting through the door with my paper round money. Always been a lover of the bigwig, this vid reminds me I've got an original in bits waiting to be done , cheers Glenn 🍻
Excellent great comment my friend 😊👊🏻
I think Father Christmas is bringing me one 😍😍😍
Excellent 🤩🤩🤩
I’m planning on getting one of these for Christmas. I remember when everyone was running hornets and grasshoppers and then someone brought a Bigwig out to play and it was soo fast compared to everything else. Greatest Tamiya buggy in my eyes. Just got back into RC so I could do something fun with my daughter. She’s not even 4 yet so I got a little toy one for her and a comical avante for me to bash around the park. I’m still yearning for a bit of nostalgia though so keeping my eyes open for a NIB re re kit. Can’t wait to drive it. Love the videos. Keep it up.
Excellent thanks for watching Bob 🤩👊🏻
I'm also looking forward to the new kits you have planned for the winter.

Excellent I have quite a few coming now 🤓👊🏻
Good morning Glen!!! Wow !! I guess I gotta get one now. Thanks!
chris venianakis
Good morning Chris 🤩
Yes you do lol 😂 👊🏻
Rock on Harvey and Lee, keeping this alive. I myself was not a fan of the bigwig but as you say, it's your money. Also I didn't know it was supplied with a techni gold motor or it was 8.4v capable. Nice little Tamiya history lesson. Rack and pinion.......wow!! Cool video my friend. Thumbs way up.

Thanks as always for watching and leaving a comment 🤩👊🏻
Brilliant! I always wanted one of these. Remember a chap turning up one night at our local rc car club when they’d come out and always remember the speed of that car around the track Think he was banned from racing it for awhile because of its pace. And now I’ve just ordered one after such along time of wanting one.
Peter Hooton Official
Excellent Peter 😊😊😊
I used to gawp at The Bigwig in Beatties Newcastle as a kid. Always wanted one. Got the Rere last year, run it on 8.4V nimh. Absolutly love it. Runs great on hard packed/gravel car park.
Never liked these at the time, but then I never saw one running which would have sold me by the sound of it!
Yeah I always loved it, but once I finally had one running it just made it even better Rob 🤩🚗💨💨
I'm a lover, this is a great car from the Golden age of tamiya
Excellent 😊😊😊
Loved my original back in the 80's especially with the technigold motor & 8.4V battery. Thinking of getting another one 👍
Excellent do it buddy, these things will be impossible to find in a year or so 😊👊🏻
@@TAMIYALegends think I'll have to get a bigwig & a novafox
Brings back memories got one hasn't been used many years got tec gold motor love your channel went get back into hobby again 👍
Always loved the bigwig!
Excellent 😊😊😊
The Bigwig is one of my favourite Tamiya buggies 😁
I still have my BigWig from 1989. Got it in Hong Kong.
Oh wow super cool my friend 🤩👊🏻
To me my interest in rc cars is the engineering that goes into them.
Oh I think you’ll like Saturdays video then 🤓.
I would like to see a modern buggy race on the surface back in the day with limited grip. They would be swapping ends in the blink of an eye.
Haha yes would be great to see 🤩👊🏻
I had been contemplating adding a BIGWIG to my growing collection as I have wanted one since its debut in 1986. Another one of those kits I wanted when I was younger. I went to visit my local hobby shop to see what he's up to and he happened to have a BIGWIG on the shelf. Needless to say, I didn't leave without it! I've always liked it, not sure why the disdain for it. Looking forward to seeing what you do with yours, Glenn. A build video coming? Even though Mooncraft is the company founded by the BIGWIG's designer, I will be sourcing the MCI sheet as well to make my finished kit look like the '86 original. Cheers and...Happy RC'n!
Excellent Tim, yes the MCI decals are a most with this kit 🤩👊🏻
I bought one last year as my first rc car since I had a boomerang at age 14, now also have a super clodbuster and an avante black which i am currently building :)
Excellent the Tamiya fleet is growing my friend 😊😊😊
@@TAMIYALegends might be a tank next 🤪
Ere,, Who You fink You are?
Some kinda Bigwig innit!
Awesome score TL. Love this Puppy.
Thanks buddy 🤩👊🏻
Nice one brings back great memories
Definitely a lover!!!!!! Great vid mate!
Excellent my friend 😊😊😊
This was the one....the one we all aspired to as it was just about affordable unlike the porches etc
Hey Alan it’s funny you said this, I’ve got an interesting video coming out on Sunday, there might be something in there that surprises you 😊👊🏻
I've still got mine from the 80s,still all original except for motor speed controller, taken out, on my shelf with a dark impact
At 10 yrs old I had my first RC the Grasshopper then went straight up to this bad boy after looking at all the pictures in the magazines and getting very exited. I was a very lucky kid that my parents got me this and the 8.4v and fast charger & techniplus transmitter I think they were called. Loved it and still do. This and my avante are my 2 shelf queens.
Love it thanks for sharing my friend 😊😊😊
Loved it ................
Thanks Scott 😎👊🏻
The Big Wig is a nice kit. 😎👌🏻
Agreed 🤩🤩🤩
I was the same Glenn that until I joined the FB group I just assumed every loved the BigWig like I did! I built my mates in the 80’s as a kid and he just left my stock Boomerang for dead and I’ve been in awe of it ever since. Looking forward to this build!
Thanks Wade, yeah I was taken aback by the animosity towards it when it was re-re’d 😭🤷🏼♂️
Looking at the BigWig brings back such great memories - one of the (many) cars we longed for back in the day ❤️
Absolutely agree my friend 🤩👊🏻
Not sure what to think but we will soon see when you build it . Loving the videos keep it up 🇬🇧😀
Thanks buddy 🤩👊🏻
One of my faveorite Tamiya cars, sold many of these back in the day when I worked in a hobby shop. Iconic car that deserves more love.
Great comment Craig 😎👊🏻
Thats gonna be a nice winter-kit. I got my winter-kits yesterday, Bush Devil ll and Opel Vectra JTCC HKS .
Excellent enjoy the builds my friend 🤩🤩🤩
Super and honest video, terrific watch as always - thanks Glenn! This and the Avante were my two dream cars as a young teenager and is now in my top 5 Tamiya cars of all time - I also have a new in box which I plan to build at some point over the winter months..... mega excited! 😊👍
I love it! Loved the build, love the fact I kept it 27mghz radio gear with an 8.4v nimh in. Love my TRF twist on the body, love the quirky steering, love everything about it. This and the Avante were the two I remember most as a kid in Beatties.
Been looking forward to you doing this Glen, I may now keep my other 2017 and build it stock/box art to have both on display.
Happy RC-img with that one 👊👍👊👍
Definitely keep both my friend 🤩🤩🤩
I didn't like it back in the day, but now I think it's beautiful car, definitely up there with the Avante and Super-Shot. Looking forward to seeing the build, especially the steering.
Awesome thanks as always for watching my friend 😊👊🏻
I got a Bigwig ready to go. Looking forward to this video as I will be looking for pointers for the body shell / decals. Fingers crossed I get it right...
It’s a great body shell to do buddy, just have to get the masking right on the rear end 😬😬😬
Now i like it, back in the days i did not. In switzerland tamiya was very expensive, so i had to buy more kyosho s . They where a bit cheaper, and also very good cars! In the beginning of the covid crisis i got one during the lookdown. Its a great car, never be sold again! Greetings
Excellent my friend 😊
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
The Big Wig was my first brand new car in 87, after a used HotShot. Still have both. Maybe I’ll do a rebuild this winter myself.
So cool you still have them Jason 😊👊🏻
Nice Winter project Glen. I think the Bigwig is a marmite car, as it never had the following that the Hotshot had, as that was the 1st 4wd Tamiya kit. I think in 2020 it looks better than it did back in 1986. Keep safe and warm during the winter months. Enjoy.
Thanks Lee you too buddy 😊👊🏻
I’m firmly in the camp that loves the big wig, can’t wait to see the build and also how you paint the shell, I’ve got the rere kit but haven’t built it yet although I do intend to build it very soon.
Mr Doofa
Excellent my friend 🤩
Thanks for watching 👊🏻
I just built one of these last month with a Tamiya 10.5t brushless motor. I slightly modified mine with MIP ball diffs, and a Super Hotshot center drive shaft. ESC fitment is an issue on these due to the removable top chassis plate. A typical TBLE-02s is too tall, so a Hobbywing XR10 stock ESC without fan works fine for brushless applications, I suppose a Hobbywing 1060 would be best with the stock can motor. DF03 dampers also liven up the chassis a bit, but are not really necessary. Its a great runner on 2s, its nice the tub is large enough that a square pack will fit. Looking forward to seeing this being built on this channel.
Excellent thanks for watching John 😊👊🏻
😁👍Beauty of a kit bud!
Thanks buddy 😎👊🏻
Put one together about 5 months ago , it was a really fun and easy build not to mention cool looking. just picked up an original on eBay doesn’t look like it’s been run much and has the original technigold. Probably just pull it apart and give it a good cleaning.
Super cool Eric 🤩🤩🤩
Great video! Im getting to appreciate this car more than i did back in the day. It must be something to do with your enthusiasm!😉. Really looking forward to seeing the final build. Also, you're the best but dont burn yourself out, my friend. Remember to get some down time!👍
Thanks my friend, I’m in a great position now of being well in front with my content, I have a week off every now and again 🤩👊🏻
I´d like to have one just for the for remembering the 80´s
Thanks for watching buddy 🤩👊🏻
I've got one to build looks great 👍
Such an enjoyable build, once you see it finished and it’s in your hands, you’ll absolutely love it Jenny 🤩👊🏻
Really great Glen.. this one was one on my wish list back then.. loved it as soon as I saw it.. sadly couldn’t quite get one on my paper round money!!. It was one that kept starring out at me on that shelf in the model shop..nice to see it again👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Darren 😊
Hey keep an eye out for Sunday’s video, I think you’ll enjoy that one my friend 😊😊😊
I will be there!!!!!!!!
I got one back in 2017 and have raced it and now converted it to a bigwig/boomerang because the steering isn't the best and on astro tracks it needs better steering because it has phenomenal grip and isn't the easiest to drive in the dry but is fantastic in the damp or wet. I have ran it on the standard motor with LiPo and it's fast enough but needs a 17 tooth pinion made from better material than the Tamiya cheese one in the kit.
Excellent thanks for watching and commenting my friend 😊😊😊
Me, I love the Bigwig. I kind of owned one once (started as a Boomerang and I upgraded it bit by bit!) and it was a really nice driver. The rack and pinion steering was great - I was rather hoping it might catch on :)
Thanks for watching Chris 😎👊🏻
Got to love a Bigwig! Gauranga.
Yes 🤩🤩🤩
Been waiting for this one!!!
Thanks buddy I’m committed to finishing all my old projects first before I start the new ones 🤓
Well that’s the plan anyway 🤪👊🏻
I love the bigwig was my second rc car
Sweet thanks for watching Steve 😊👊🏻
I love the Big wig, along with the Avante it is the car I remember making the biggest impact on me when I picked up the Tamiya guidebook from my local model shop. I would have thought a good Canadian winter project would have been a CC01 chassis (with hop-ups) for a bit of snow driving action.
You could be very correct on that winter project my friend 😎👊🏻
I love the Bigwig and don’t understand why people don’t. It was a git to build though lol. Box art all the way for me.
Yes has to be box art on this one 😊👊🏻
The bigwig is a great looking car.
100% agree my friend 😊😊😊
Have never built a BW but thinking this could also be a little winters project too 😃 hoping we also get some snow so I get can get some decent winters RC fun 😎
Well as a lovely build I can’t recommend it enough 😎👊🏻
That's a funny Canadian accent you got mate!
Pmsl 😂
You’re not the first to say that 🤪👊🏻
I have a 3500kv brushless system in mine running 2S lipo. The chassis handles the power no problem.
It's on the may be list.
I have hat list too 🤪👊🏻
Glenn if i were you i get MCI costume made a super grasshopper decal . hope tamiya one day make 4wd grasshopper .
Yeah an official 4wd Grasshopper would be very cool 😎
got one love it and will never sell her
I don't own one but I do love the Bigwig.
Thanks Rob 😊👊🏻
I'm not a big fan of the looks but I was jealous of the technigold motor and more power. Made my old lancia seem really slow.
Yeah this was quite a step up in straight line speed 😊🚗💨💨💨
Definitely a Vegemite car. Thought they were cool back in the day.
Thanks for watching 😊👊🏻
Classic Tamiya, you have there. Wasn’t it their 10th year anniversary & the body design Was done by a top Japanese Designer. 😎
Yes you’re spot on 🤩
When I built my one the extra bits that stick under the body (wheel arch) was a total waste of time because no matter what you stick them on with other than super glue they just fall off🤔 but other than that it's a cool looking buggy that goes well!👍
Yeah there a pain 😂👊🏻
But they do look good once fitted
Excellent! I agree on most points but after soldering new receiver aerials after roll overs and cleaning disassembly the aerial tended to break inside from rewinding, opted for the hollow whip body damage lol :) not sure of the motor? Like the standard box art but wouldn't be adverse to seeing upgrades similar to the Avante black which you improved to look way better ++ handling:)
Thanks James 😊👊🏻
Great video as usual, I recently bought a Bigwig myself, so looking forward to this build !
BTW, did I see damage on your body ?
I have thin hair... I'll probably need a Bigwig, at some point.
Pmsl 😂. I’m right there with you on that 🤪👊🏻
Hey Glen be interested to see if the rear gearbox goes together nice and smooth. Remember the last one you built it was a bit of a pain and not smooth, mine was exactly the same and still not real smooth. Love the BigWig though. 😃
Yeah I’d imagine it’ll be the same again until I get a few batteries through it 🤩🚗💨💨
I must confess I'm not a big lover of it's looks but the nostalgia value is enough for me to want one! I just got hold of a NIB Grasshopper which is the one that I always wanted as a child after seeing mates with them, yes my mid life crisis is in full effect :-) Btw, are you intending on getting the re Terra Scorcher at some point?
Excellent I think the Grasshopper started sooooooo many people into RC 🤩🤩🤩
I’ve actually got a original Terra Scorcher to restore soon 😎👊🏻
I got the original dixie decal from ebay too
Oh wow very cool indeed my friend 😎👊🏻
Love this car my first 4wd hated putting the tyres on they are finger killers😂😂😂
Finger killers 😂👊🏻
Yep I know that pain Chris 😬
@@TAMIYALegends 😂😂😂😂
The Bigwig for me has never really filled a hole in the market like most of the other Tamiya kits did . It was Tamiya's top 4wd buggy at the time of release and the price matched that at around £150. Lots of good stuff like the motor were included and it was able to run the quick 8,4v battery's Yet it had a plastic yellow fake engine and exhaust. and was around £10 more expensive than a Kyosho Optima Mid and £60 more than a boomerang. Why did anyone buy one other than the way it looked and Tamiya great marketing.
Its going to be nice to see the build and it always nice to see these cars from BITD run.
Thanks for watching and commenting David 😊👊🏻
Hey Glen, great content as always, thank you and this one is quite timely for me as I am contemplating adding one of these to my NIB collection before they sell out but I am after some advice if possible, you see I have a couple of cars in my sights currently; the 2017 re-re bigwig or the new VQS which launches soon, obviously the VQS is way more expensive for reasons best known to Tamiya but purely from a technical perspective what are your thoughts on the VQS mainly as you have kindly shared your thoughts on the Big Wig here :) and finally will you be getting/reviewing/building a VQS anytime soon? cheers buddy and keep up the great work, stay safe.
duff duff
Hmmm 🤔 good question 🤓
So no I’m not getting one, I feel it’s over priced unfortunately. But it’s a couple of levels above the BigWig in performance and design. You said it’s for your nib collection, so personally I’d get the BigWig as there getting harder to find and the prices are going up 🤷🏼♂️. My gut feeling is that in six months to a year you’ll find VQS’s getting cheaper! Obviously this is just my opinion and I could be wrong 🤓
@@TAMIYALegends Thanks for the reply and that echoes my thoughts exactly. Its good to hear from an eminent enthusiast such as yourself though as I am still pretty new to this millarchy :) the VQS seems way overpriced to me but i do like it so i am hoping it might come down in price in the future and i am a little worried that the bigwig will disappear in the same way the boomerang has! That's really helpful thank you and i think iknow which way to go now :) all the best and take care.
Funny you’re talking about the haters, I’m definitely in the camp of not liking the Big Wig. I remember being really disappointed with the looks when it was released back in the day. Not to take anything away from this kit, but I’ll take a car from the Hotshot family any day.
Thanks for watching Mark 😎👊🏻
By the way, never mind the looks!, have you driven one? They are super smooth and stable. A real pleasure to drive!. I think the slightly heavy chassis keeps it planted nicely .
Yeah I’ve got a couple of running videos on here, but really looking forward to getting this one out to the new locations 🤩🚗💨💨💨
I really like this buggy, how is the reliability, compared to the Hot shot and older cars. My first RC was a Hot Shot, it broke every time I drove it .
Kieren Paynter
It pretty robust tbh, but obviously it’s not a basher, no Tamiya car is 🤪👊🏻
You refer to the Golden Era of R/C, I try to find some information on the subject
could you do a video on the topic please ?
Thanks
I do like the Bigwig but not love it lol, When i was a kid i used to think that the body shell was hard plastic and the same with the hornet too.
Yeah I know what you mean with the shell, I think I thought the same back in the day Paul 😊👊🏻
Glenn, i'll be honest, i never liked the BigWig, not because i had anything against it, but simply because i thought it looked too much like a Tamiya QD ( Quick Drive ) model that Tamiya used to make back in the day. I'm not exactly sure why i think this way, it's just the Box Art reminds me very much of the "Cheaper" less sophisticated Tamiya QD Models of the 90's ?? Basically my perception was they were a poor man's Tamiya back in the day! lol. But, having seen this video, i'm shocked because i never knew it had 8.4v, a Technigold Motor, and was faster than standard Tamiya 7.2v/540 Silver Can Models! I actually now want one! I missed out big time back in the day! You know that saying, "Never judge a book by it's cover" well that feels pretty pertinent a saying right now! lol. Wes, Liverpool, UK.
Great post Wes 😊👊🏻
The Bigwig is one of the cars I've been looking at to get into the hobby. I just find that air intake works really well with the shape of the body. For someone new to RC, would this be a good first car?
Yes it would my friend 🤩👊🏻
I always considered the bigwig the hotshot evolution..... I’ll admit I’m not a lover but it’s a fine kit bit unusual and that unique steering it was quick in the day by any standard and the technigold was very underrated
I never ran the steel aerials on anything after I saw an Avante with a chunk ripped out of the chassis because the aerial dug in the ground please please use a 8.4 pack
(Telling off bit) wtf are you doing ripping that tape off the parts box use a knife and cut it next time 🤯
Top top Video as always
The Bigwig was snubbed from 11 year old me’s wish list purely because of the name. I though the name was so bad I didn’t even care that it was a pretty good car 🙄🤣 . A more mature me could definitely find a home for one now though 👍
Great video, are you going to keep the channel running now ?
Hey Chris
Yes I’m continuing for the foreseeable future, I had a big influx of channel Patreons which has made it much easier for me to continue. Thanks for watching buddy 😊👊🏻
I'm one of those that think it looks good - in ANY other livery than the boxart :P It's not the colors themself, but there is something... I thinkl it's that the sides are white. No stickers or anything on those white areas. Seen a lot of cool non-boxart cars though.
I don't think the people that go boxart have weak imaginations though :P It IS an iconic car.
Thanks Roger 😊👊🏻
