@@mattc7005 It's opinion, and it's one that I agree with. The remake fight is pure fantasy, it's Bloodsport but with little kids fighting, on wires. To me, the Original is quite relatable since I competed in tournaments that looked very similar, and the style of karate fighting is way more realistic, more than one fight going on at a time, but if you haven't actually been to a karate tournament, you wouldn't know.

@@cloudstrife746, the original being better is not about nostalgia.
Cobra Kai is popular, new Batman movies are also popular and there are remakes that were always considered better than the original movies (IT, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, The Fly, The Crazies, 3:10 to Yuma, ...). And there are several older classic Kung Fu movies, like Enter the Dragon. Then Kickboxer, Big Trouble in Little China, etc.
The Karate Kid remake is not about karate, it has a lot of the shaky camera problems, there are lots of light behind the actors, the kick (if I remember the movie) was unjustified (the original had a foreshadowing), it's not as emotional (the original had the idea of quitting, the massage, ...), etc.
My daughter watched the original Karate Kid and liked it. She also asked of an illustration book adaptation and I bought it for her.
The accusation that nostalgia is blinding is either pseudo-psychiatry or trolling. Another is refuting the arguments instead of making up about what someone feels.

Something the original took great care of to remind the audience Miyagi Do is based on Japanese roots. If it was set it Japan, Dre would go through the same struggles as he did here, no difference. So your reasoning for liking it set in China is completely false because they could have set it anywhere else and you would still like it because Dre would go through the same thing

The remake is, in my view, a better executed version of the original. In part, it comes down to the setting. In part, I think it comes down to it being 26 years newer. In part, you also have more established actors like Jackie Chan and Taraji Henson, and even Jaden Smith.
The final fight, in particular, is just better done. The fight choreography is more elaborate. The pain on Dre's face and the remorse and shame on Cheng's face are more apparent, and the final moment of Cheng handing Dre the trophy is not as rushed as the final moment in the Karate Kid. A lot of that probably comes down to how movies were made in 1984 vs 2010. Also, I think that using a misdirect like Dre did, rather than just an "unstoppable move" is more plausible.

Original has: more drama, better lore/wordbuilding/depth of the dojos styles etc, characters (especially Pat Morita's Miyagi), romance philosophies/life lessons, 80s aesthetic and nostalgia, and legacy.
Remake has: Better choreography for the most part, better Miyagi fending off bullies fight scene, a lovely parallel homage but twist with the snake hypnosis stance being different to but mimicking the crane kick, smoother camerawork/cinematography due to being more modern and also Jackie Chan.
Overall they are both good films and worth watching but the Original is definitely the better film and legacy. This is coming from someone who saw the remake first and then the originals later.

Its the Original 1 for me, because we saw in the Karate Kid, where he did learn that kick from Mr Miyagi,
Dres kick is too unbelievable at the end,as he didn't learn it from his KUNG FU teacher, we the audience are expected to believe he can instantly pull it off without any trial or error from zero teaching from his teacher on how to use the snake method.
Original is Grit & Bone, the remake tournament is too flashy.
1 Thing I do like in the remake is where the students show honor to Dre's teacher, to see something like that in the Original Karate Kid would be amazing, it is what it is.

    • @nesoukkefka1741

The original has the same issue storywise, Myagi didn't teach him the kick, Daniel just saw him do it once from the distance as a practise, and like the remake the original expect you to believe Daniel was capable of replicate it first try in a real fight situation.
Ultimately it's not an issue, it is just classic story telling of main character being put in a desperate situation, and managing to pull off that one move they wanted to pull off, a classic storytelling thing that you can see in a lot of media.
I do agree however with the Remake tournament being to flashy, especially seing such a crowd coming to just watch a kid tournament, I still think the Remake was a great movie on it's own merits.

You just can't top the original! It had chemistry, believable fight sequences, and most of all it wasn't all Holywooded up! For my money, the original is better in every way. It was cinema gold back in the day like Rocky, everybody loves a good underdog!

I really liked Jackie Chan and Will Smith's son is adorable here, but, I like the original the best because we were all pulling for Daniel-san and Mr. Miyagi... In the new one we already knew what to expect!!!

Everybody knew with all of that build up he was going to win in the end (or you'd have a lot of ticked off people)..standard...hero is the underdog...is mentored by wise Sifu...trains hard...climatic ending where hero uses his training & "heart" to triumph over those who doubted or harrassed him/her....
