This unlocked a memory within me. I remember in music class back in 07-08, we were asked to make a poster about our favorite music artist which was really bad for me because the only real music I liked back then was 90s hip hop which was a huge no-no in my household so I had no choice but to resort to video game music. I ultimately decided on Sonic music since it was the only game franchise that I knew that had lyrics in their songs but because the internet was very limited back then, I couldn't properly research who actually sang those songs so my poster was just filled with printed pictures of Sonic characters. All the guys thought the poster was cool but man did the girls laugh at my poster and I ended up failing that project. I still love Sonic music to this day but I I still get embarrassed remembering that.
When I was in college, I actively tried to counter the very thing you talked about in the prologue and hosted a radio show that only played video game music. I found all sorts of genres and tried to have people think of game music as not just the hardware-limited stuff, but a means of hosting music of any and all varieties. I don't know how wide my audience was, but I hope I managed to make at least one person have a revelation of that sort.
One of my favourite soundtrack ever is the Portal 1 OST. It's so weird and atmospheric, I've never heard something that sounded like this at the time, and even to this day, the only thing that sound similar is the Half Life 2 OST. While looking for similar music, I've found a Portal fangame called Portal Prelude, which also has some amazing atmospheric music. And this is the game that introduced me to Nine Inch Nails, which made the music for Quake.
Great video bane worth it to be honest I don't know what's my favorite video game song there are too many of them but one thing I like is I got headphones and my iPod 256gb I use it to go out and listen my video game music I got 3102 video game songs
ya a little long, music is part of one's soul, like a little boy on you tube playing the piano at 1 year 10 months and of course he hadn't had lessons remarkable to put those little hands in a chord. Well, he's probably an autistic savant
