By most accounts, Croc came before Mario 64, as it was pitched by Argonaut (the Star Fox devs) to Nintendo as a Yoshi game with a working prototype before Mario 64 even started development. So, in terms of borrowing from something that borrowed from something that borrowed from something, it may all point back to Croc, but there's a lot of truth to the fact that tons of 3D platformers were all in development in parallel from different companies.

People in their early to mid 20s weren't even born for the 64 era. I was 6-11 in that era. I'm 34 now.
