Why Are Republicans Obsessed With “Woke” Corporations? | The Class Room With Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò

  • In the last few years, Republicans have been increasingly concerned about a “woke” corporate agenda, but they're missing the real problem. It’s not that corporations and establishment politicians care too much about racial or gender justice. The problem is they pretend to care about racism or misogyny to defend their wealth and power. And that's what we should be worried about: The amount of power that corporate elites have over working people."

Interesting question. Perhaps making up a *new* word for a term that has already been defined thoroughly by history and the dictionary allows just enough *confusion* over it's meaning to add to the gridlock in today's politics. Adding to the gridlock in the Senate in D.C. by further dividing decent, average American Citizens into smaller and smaller groups in this fashion puts all the power into the pockets of the Amerikan Oligarchs whose political bribery is engineering and has engineered the downfall of American Democracy since the 1980's. Don't forget that it was our own Supreme Court who *invented* and *legalized* Dark Money Bribery through their 2010 Citizens United Decision. It only took six years of anonymous and unlimited amounts of money from domestic *and* foreign sources being funneled into America's elections and politics to produce tRump.

Everyone should be concerned with woke corporations and woke politicians for the same reason: it allows a group, in this case corporations and politicians, to appeal to society at large as if they are an ally when the reality is they will do everything in their power to fight meaningful change. Corporations will sell you rainbow products and put a rainbow background up on their social media platforms, but will they stop fighting unions? Will they better support workers rights in any meaningful way? The answer is no. Will politicians wear African garb and knell at protests? Absolutely. But, will they make any meaningful changes to the law that would support black Americans or really any people of color? No.
These entities use woke culture as a marketing ploy and by and large it has worked. Some of us want meaningful changes though and see through the bullshit they are trying to spoon feed us.

1:00 YES! It would actually, as ‘breaking up’ via antitrust ensures more competition since those splintered businesses will hire MORE people as they’ll differ in management styles.

I have always been inclined that this was indeed their modus operandi. However, I just struggled to formulate this phenomena, and ideas in a coherent manner. It's almost enigmatic. But now that I've been introduced to all these comprehensive list of new concepts, I am able to actually put the pieces to the puzzle. Cheers!

When Soviet Union seized to exist, one would think it's the end of Communism. But no, it's alive and well, and today we still hear this propaganda about inequality and oppression, and apparently the more benefits those "oppressed" are getting, to the degree of living 100% on others' expense, the more oppressed they become and the louder they complain.

Corporations aren’t “woke” they’re pandering to the general public’s ideals. On one hand the disingenuous virtue signaling is repulsive. On the other hand, knowing that most American’s values have shifted towards more acceptance and fair treatment is encouraging.

While its easy, and very understandable, to hate the elite, its important to acknowledge and avoid the pitfalls that Marxist ideals have, something that I feel this video completely fails to do. It very much so feels like they were attempting to justify such ideals to individuals who are not well versed in the subject. This video takes a very Marxist approach of creating an us vs them mentality. Some of the fundamentals of Marx’s beliefs include how there are only two classes, the “oppressed” and the “oppressor”
I also feel, as a reasonable slightly right leaning individual, that this video focuses on the views of those who are extreme on the right rather than evaluating some of the more valid concerns. This is not by any means uncommon as the right and left have become increasingly hateful towards each other, which makes it all the more important to call out this behavior and push back against it to promote understanding and civil discourse, an idea that is the foundation of our society. The title claims to be evaluating the opposing view but no such thing occurs. They simply pick a single aspect to disagree with on a nuanced subject.
I personally strongly dislike “woke” corporate culture because of a number of reasons. For starters, I agree completely with the idea that companies use this as a distraction to cover for the fact that they don’t care. It is incredibly frustrating to watch these corporations pretend to care. Furthermore, many of these companies have hired “diversity officers” that are largely unregulated just so they can check a box. These diversity officers are highly likely to establish radical policies such as requiring a certain number of employees of each race (which is objectively racism and avoids addressing the real problem of discrimination on an individual level when hiring) or, as was the case with Target, they can redirect funds to extremist organizations that, for example with Target, want to destroy Mt. Rushmore. Next, I feel that they are constantly pushing for pride to an extreme extent. This a slightly more controversial take, but I don’t think that extreme levels of pride are helpful for anyone. Its not going to make anyone less prejudiced, in fact it would only further push already unreasonable people into extremism. It also serves to contribute to younger generations’ need to feel special as, for many people, I feel excessive pride is a coping mechanism for a lack of feeling “special” in other areas. This has the possibility of pushing people into groups that they should not be identifying with out of a mental health crisis and need to feel special in some way. That problem runs much deeper though and pride is only a minor aspect of it, the greater issue being colleges, current expectations, the current mental health crisis, and themes in popular media. All of these issues are inevitably tied together though which makes discussion very difficult. Lastly, I feel that many of the ideas outlined of adhering to individual needs based on race, ethnicity, and identity is a dangerous path. I much prefer the idea of everyone being treated completely equally as special treatment is a dangerous path that will always without fail lead to some individuals being treated unfairly based on their identity due to broad policies making decisions based on said identities.
If anyone has actually taken the time to read this I would love some discussion as I am always looking to hone my beliefs based on the experiences shared by others.
