Learn how to “load the boat” if you notice something is off. Oftentimes as a med student, you will spend the most time with patients. If you see a scary lab value or your patient has acute changes, pass the info up the chain of command as soon as possible.
Death and dying are rough. The sleep deprivation and insane amount of pressure can not be conducive to learning. I know trauma docs and surgeons are different. But why push people to make mistakes due to fatigue? Too many 18 hour nursing shifts in nursing homes for this old gal. Do not want the responsibility or liability of a doctor.
I had a 3.9 GPA and 8 months left to finish my biochem degree. I was already studying for the mcat and after working 2 years at a hospital and shadowed many doctors I had to face the fact it simply wasn't for me. That field is a lifestyle, not a career. I simply realized that working 70 hours a week was not what I considered a good use of my life. I will say though that I have met truly passionate people in this profession and they absolutely love it. Long story short is being completely honest with yourself is the most important thing, and don't forget you truly have the ability to do whatever you want as long as you work hard
I had believed I'd be ok with working 70-80h a week in medicine. The kicker was the overnight stuff. That sleep deprivation, even for just a few years, was not something I think I can handle at the age of 31 or 33 when I'm done. if you'd ask me to work Monday to Sunday, 8am to 9pm daily, but have time to get a good night's rest, in a subject like medicine (that I'd like), I'd do it. But if my sleep is gone, my mental health will be gone again (as it had been) do I feel like I've wasted my 3.8 and 516? sometimes. Now I feel directionless, wonder what I can do with that
Thats it! As a med student as well... these are honest lessons, all without the ilusions that others medgrams/tube uses to hide the reality we face in order to promote their page.
Working in ICUs as an RD intern I've learn to always be kind to the patients and around them. You never know if that is the last time you'll see them, or if you're the last person they'll see. You never know if a rude comment someone makes its the last thing they'll hear. So just be always kind.
What I learned from my experience, most nurses and scrub techs are nice, but some are assholes. But at the end of the day, treat everyone with respect because like you said, you don’t know if it’s hour 16 for them
You are strong you will make it! Everyone learns something each day but are too ignorant to admit it. You will learn new things and will make a difference and help others.I believe in you.
It's good to see a new wave of medical professionals--ones who recognize that doing everything on the edge of a knife isn't the best way to keep our "troops" in order. Gee, I wonder why after being hated by the old guard and the educational system we expect patients to treat them any better? Or why medical professionals rank 3 of the first 5 in professions for addiction and suicide? 🤔 Thank you for all you do and will do. This is a tough time to get into it. You have our respect and our thanks 😊
It’s nuts! I remember my first night shift as a nurse and felt like a sack of potatoes after. Then you get used to 12 hour shifts and don’t really care anymore. I frequently do 16 hour shifts because I only work Thursday and Fridays and if I work over 8 hours I get over time so I just maximize my two days and work a double. Feel so tired after but it’s worth it!! I feel ya bruh
Thanks for the tips, I'm planning on going into the medical field. I want to be a doctor one day, but I'm not finished with highschool yet and I have to go to college and pre med, I'm guessing, and med school. I'm excited but anxious about it
That last one needs to be taught to some vet people. Patience and understanding was in surprisingly short supply from some people at my extern for animal people and people in a profession like that one. Only one person really seemed to see how it was affecting me to be told I had “messy” hair when it wasn’t messy, just not exactly like it was on most days or told something that happened because of something I don’t have control over and should’ve been mentioned in the moment and not two hours later. I will always be grateful to that one guy, but the others really put me off from clinic jobs and that makes me sad
Week* Weak means not strong, about to break. Like "the old man is so weak he cannot lift his grandchildren anymore. :) Not being a dick but I am guessing English may not be your first language and I always appreciated someone showing me what I did wrong and why to help me learn another language
Some of us are! I enjoy meeting the new med students. If I help you out it helps me out in the end, not to mention it’s not about me it’s always about the patient. I’m sorry you had a bad experience with bad scrub techs, that’s very unfortunate.
@@KS-cq2pt you are right, in fact I see a lot of people depressed in medvet and dentistry school. They are challenging but the difference is that the dont have res.
@@KS-cq2pt Yes, but I have already seen a lot of those. I watched my cat die because she was put to sleep from old age. I am going to a veterinary tech school. I think treating people is a lot harder because people honestly scary to me. I know there will be a lot of hard days, but I definitely would not have the trials of a person going into human medicine.
People talking about him in any way other than supportive just look jealous to me lmao, people know medicine is an extremely challenging profession, a lot of you probably look like this working your regular hourly wage jobs and or whatever else lol, doctors just set off peoples insecurities
You can't just handle spending over half a day working for year with a positive mindset, showing people how stressful it is is important so that they can show appreciation to our healthcare workers as well show others if they can handle it.

That’s great. You were honest with what you can handle, avoided insane debt, and probably avoided a lifestyle you’d regret.
Not every field in medicine requires these absurdly long hours. I'm going into medicine, but avoiding specialties like surgery for this reason.

Don't copy the same notes that others write, because it is not always correct. You need to assess the patient for yourself.🎯💯

Be a hyper communicator. Ask if I did something wrong or is it something else instead of holding on to grief and following residents to the bathroom.
You are awesome Andy! Thank you for sharing and I am sure you’ll do fantastic in the following rotations.

How much studying do you need to do at night during rotations?

Hey brother, how is med school in Canada
♡
Hi are you Lisa Nguyen's brother?
Wait how the hell do you have time to work? What do med students do if they have to work?
What do you come home and study? Are you still taking classes while on rotations?
You have shelf exams, step 2, and the motivation of not looking incompetent during rotation
