Historic highway. The opening sequence with original ramps & bridges gives a sense of how different it is from modern limited-access highways.

14:05 - 18:33 - Section just east of Allegheny Tunnel - was straightened & curves relaxed about 30 years ago when the truck lane was added - Used to have numerous curves, and sharper curves and a steeper grade than anywhere else on the Turnpike. I remember when we took trips eastbound, the trucks hurtling down around those curves passing our Chevy at unsafe speeds. The Jake Brake had been invented but many trucks didn't have it at the time.

Used to go through all four tunnels at least once a year on our way from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh when i was a kid in the 80's. Now, its been over 5 years since last i went through any of them. Not much has changed. Always loved the tunnels, it was my highlight of the trip and all the HoJos that used to line the PA Turnpike. I still enjoy driving through them when i have a reason to.

In the next few years it may change, there are plans to bypass Allegheny Tunnel. When traveling west you will go toward the left and around and up the mountain. If it ever happens.

My parents and were from Pittsburgh but then lived in South Jersey. How MANY times each year we travelled the turnpike to visit Pittsburgh! Oh such good memories.

Many times I have driven on the segment of the Pennsylvania Turnpike between the Bedford and Somerset Interchanges. If I am not mistaken, that aforementioned segment of the Pennsylvania Turnpike is thirty-six statute miles long. Anyhow, I had noticed something about the Allegheny Mountain Tunnels that is extremely significant. Nowadays, the tunnels are much better illuminated than ever before 😃😃😃😃😃. The upgrades in tunnel illuminations were badly needed, and had to be done. Otherwise, driving through the Allegheny Mountain Tunnels would have been much more dangerous.

Very dangerous driving through at night- especially with rain. ☹️

Also, wintertime driving on the above stretch of the Pennsylvania Turnpike, covered with much snowfall and ice, gets to be very-to-extremely dangerous, too.

I like control signs, reminds me how huge this country is. Lots of trucks.
