  • Plumbing & HVAC BASICS:
    At the very basics every installer and service tech must have and know how to use an analog or digital manometer to properly install [and diagnose] gas equipment like water heaters, furnaces, boilers etc.
    In this video I simply demonstrate the basics of the process for measuring inlet pressure to an appliance and setting the pressure using a line/appliance regulator.
    You can buy a manometer here:

    Great video. New subscriber. I would also add that you also need to clock the gas meter. The gas company should provide the quantity BTU heat content of 1 cu/ft of gas provided. You should also factor your elevation for your equipment location to set the gas pressure. I would love to see a video from more technicians on the process. It seems very few people do it. Thanks for the video!!

    This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. czcams.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

      @@mechanical-hub , you did address it at the end of your video but @tzvifeldman is correct. The working pressure (pressure with the unit running ) is the most important pressure and your regulator adjustment should be made at this time . After setting your working pressure then you should note your lock up pressure ( pressure with the unit off & making sure you do not have a creeping regulator). I’m not sure if you made another video on the proper set up and working pressure on adjustments for the 2 pound system which should always be done before the pound to inches regulator set up. You did a good job on your video but you really need to start making those regulator adjustments with working pressure . My expertise comes from 35 years in the natural gas industry and in my retirement I still consult when incidences occur in our industry. Hope some of this information helps and stay safe out there.

    I read there should be gas flow when setting the pressure as the cutoff pressure will be up to thirty percent higher than the operating pressure under flow.

    You did mention that this was the only gas appliance in your shop. Maybe should have just touched on dynamic pressure for the younger techs. I think I would have dusted of my old Honeywell Liquid Manometer to SHOW what an inch of water column actually means. Not to go into a 45 minute dissertation. But only touch on the subject and let them know that there can other factors involved IF... working with other appliances on the same regulator.

    Hey Eric,
    Do you use your digital manometer for your manometer test downstream of the regulator? Here in Ontario we need to maintain 10” for 10 mins. I find the digital manometer I use will “creep” while my analog doesn’t. Have you run into this?

    • @mechanical-hub
      @mechanical-hub  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely. Our final gas test is a manometer test, simply showing a leak free system. I always use my analog for that. The problem I see most often is the appliance gas valves leaking by. I either use my analog or isolate the appliance if the inspector is okay with that. Most inspectors in my area know that the gas valve will show a leak on the digital manometer.

    Is this a propane combi-boiler? At least for tank natural gas water heaters the gas control valve has a built in regulator that can be adjusted, only installed a few tankless water heaters so I am not familiar with them. My master plumber never mentioned to me about testing gas pressure, but I do remember reading that youre supposed to do it in the manual😅

    • @mechanical-hub
      @mechanical-hub  Před rokem

      Tank water heaters do not have a regulator built in. You are still required to verify proper gas pressure, just as you are for literally every gas appliance.
