Model Expo is fantastic to deal with. If you screw up something during the build of a Model Shipways Kit, they will replace the part. This is a true customer service driven business.
Anybody wondering about the arrows from the jibs in the plan, showing the lines going "nowhere." It is a mirror of the visible lines. Port and starboard are the same. It is so when the boat tacks, the jib is trimmed on the other side. (I'm sure Gary figured it out as he went along. It was clear to me, having been a sailor.) Just FYI so you don't think the plans are faulty....they just assume you realize it is the same on the other side.
You are correct about the white tubs, they are in fact inflatable survival rafts. This is now a maritime law to have them and they also include other things such as emergency food rations, water and extra life vests as well as any other survival gear the capt wishes to put in the kits and of course will fit. Just so happens I just got the exact same model that came in the mail today from the same manufacture to. Was super excited to have found your channel, this is going to be awesome to have someone else's work to fall back on while I build mine. With that said I want to thank you for taking the time to video everything. I know what a challenge it is to build one of these ships, so the fact that you added to your process by documenting and sharing it with us is awesome!
It's a great model, the directions can be a bit of a challenge but I worked through then so you don't have too. There were times I wanted to get away from it for awhile but because of posting videos I stuck it out. It took me 8 months to complete but there was tons of video time in there. So don't give up because it turns out to be very nice model. Good luck.

It's a series of 3 models that are designed for and have instructions dedicated to teaching people with no experience how to build wooden model ships in 3 levels that get you ready to take on larger more complex models.

Video 22 coming up soon I am going to do something I said I wasn't going to do some time back. I'm not saying everything I do has to be done because everyone builds there own model. I'm just having fun building mine and showing everyone what she looks like my way and maybe give you some ideas. This is my first build of this magnitude and every step of the way is a new challenge. You my find an easer or better way to do your's, thats the fun of building a model. I know I have said a few bad things about this model but what I have seen and read of other kits I think this is one of the best out there for the money. Have fun.
Hello Gary, I purchased this model too and I think your videos are going to be of great help to start building it. I have built other boats in the past and there is always something you will have to figure out because the plans are sometimes neither help nor accurate. There is a billing boat model kit of the bluenose too that maybe coulb be of some help. I personally prefer the international system too for measurements!!

Great channel. Like you I have never built a wooden ship or wooden plane kit. I build large scale resin Mechas 90% of the time but I just picked up the Model Airways 1/16 Sopwith Camel from Model Expo. Like you said their customer service is fantastic. Great series on this kit.
I purchased this book from Amazon when I purchased my kit. It's a good history of the original Bluenose: "A Race for Real Sailors: The Bluenose And the International Fishermen's Cup, 1920-1938". Thoroughly enjoying your videos Gary.
Bluenose ii was launched in 1963. she was a modernized over the original. she had engines and two screws. I was 9 years old in the early 60's, my cousin and i would sneak down to the ship yard and watch them as they built the ship, that was our summer entertainment. my grandmother would tell us kids all about Angus Walters original captain and owner of the first Bluenose as she and captain Walters were good friends. in the mid 2000's they needed to rebuild Bluenose ii as she had reached the end of her serviceable life. i have included a link to her relaunch in 2012. bluenose.novascotia.ca/restoration. enjoyed your vids.
BTW, Thanks for the metric endorsement. I'm American, worked all over the world, and yes Metric is good. Check the other edge of every 12" ruler we had from 1950 on. It's metric...Also, the Caliper you show, usually has a button to switch back forth. If not, get a new one that does. It's great to have both.
Does anybody know if the page with double print in the instructions is common to ALL sets or just a one off in this particular instance? Poor build sheets would give one cause to doubt quality of the model from the outset. Your tutorial will be a great help in outlining the problems and fixes for the rest of us. Focusing could be better! Not a criticism, just a comment. Good work, Gary.

I built a Maine Peapod by Midwest products and really enjoyed it. I know its not the same as ship but I like working with wood I do a fair bit of working so the wooden ships are grabbing my attention
Rodney Hickey My next model will be plastic. I don't know how guys build one wood ship after another, 7 months on mine and I'm a little burned out. First I have to take some time off and get caught up on my stamp collection, I have fallen behind on that. The paper clips are just one idea I got from someone else and they work pretty good.
Hi I was watching and noticed the part about the image on page 26. The model kit I have was purchased by my father almost 30 years ago. I opened up my manual to see the error and realized that I had a slightly different picture. From looking at the images in your video I can see that when they redesigned the instructions they moved the drawings around in the image and deleted the old drawings, but never deleted the old words. So there are now two sets of writing overlapping and in some instances words pointing to nothing.

Think of this, A 1959 Oldsmobile land yacht is huge, but the spark plugs are the same size as other vehicles. Much the same as the ship models. The scale changes, so the actual part size changes. I doubt you will check these comments from old videos, but maybe help to someone else. Also, there are deadeyes, and other shaped pieces. Some rectangle, some shaped like hearts, etc.
If it is the Bluenose and not the Bluenose II, then it should not be flying the Canadian "Maple Leaf" flag. That flag became the national flag of Canada around 1968. The original Bluenose would have flown the previous Canadian flag which was the British "Red Ensign" with the seal of Canada.
if You ask any Polish sailor about Bluenose, he or she will tell You it was built in the town of Lunenburg. why do we know this? 'cause we have a shantie about her ;)
This isn't the build yet, don't condemn the usefulness until you get to those videos. I'm watching through the play list and I have questions but I'm waiting as they are probably answered in a later video. Plus this was filmed 3 years ago, youtube was completely different then. Watch my series on tips and tricks and you will see most of what I use. You also will need a good hobby knife and tweezers, plus a lot of clamps

I cannot see any of the fine detail because of the poor video quality 480p is not high enough definition.
