Thank you for not releasing a video about the virus. I really needed this info and since I am diving deep into audio. I appreciate you thank you very much for making these videos
This is unbelievably helpful and useful. Mad respect for putting so much helpful info in one single video. One thing I want to add is that with the voice-over in a closet trick at the end, the biggest game changer is to also insulate BEHIND you. Yes your voice is going the direction the clothes in the closet are, and those deaden the sound significantly. But what no one ever thinks about is how much the microphone in there picks up from the opposite direction. Sure, the amount of reflections is reduced heavily by those clothes, but if you're able to hang something behind you or even stand a whole mattress or something (zero budget idea) up on its side and create a soft wall behind you, it'll take those VO recordings from great to fantastic!
I didnt know the bouncing bars was the trouble maker of my noisy footage. ill definetely try to balance em in -12 to -6 in next shot. thanks a lot jeven and sidney!
Hey Jeven, just want to say thank you for putting out your videos. After watching your videos I decided to make some steps toward my goal of building my own CZcams and Instagram creator pages. The first step for me was getting past that awkward feeling of being on camera. I also thought that my equipment would limit me too much, but again after watching one of your videos I decided to stop putting up obstacles for myself and just get out there and try things out. I appreciate it!
Critical topic! After 30+ years in the video business (now retired) I can’t tell you how important good audio recording is. You must spend as much time and effort into getting the best audio possible for your video editor. He/she can only fix so much in post! Your points on mic placement are spot on! Shotgun mics do reject sound from the sides but they do need to be as close to the subject as possible and yet stay out of frame. However, you can avoid plosives by talking slightly across the mic rather than directly into it. Overall you shared great tips. Thnx!!
nice advice... will try to improve my audio in my next vlog using yournadvice. i just wish i could have watched this before posting my very first ever vlog 5 days ago...
Loved that foam panel hack, never thought about that before! Great topic. Used to use my closet for a recording booth with music. Egg crates work as well!
My wife and I used that zombie fitness program for Xbox many, many times, was one of our favorites before Microsoft nixed it. Didn't know you were involved with that, cool man! I stopped the workout many times just to check out the location, it was really interesting. Where was that filmed? Good Flying!
Awesome. That was a project that I developed for Xbox any my company shot. We shot in some warehouses in Downtown LA that we built out for the set and a cool junkyard art community in the hills above LA.
This is really topical. Even professional main stream media people are working from home. More often than not the sound from their home office really sucks. We could all use help improving audio - especially from the home office. I've been hanging blankets up all around my office. I'm really sick of it. I was hoping there would be a silver bullet in some special microphone for doing voice over. I like the hack of standing a couple of sound panels either side of you. I'll give that a go. Thanks!
7:21 "Right angle clamp" ? I googled it and can't find anything that looks like what he is pointing to when he says that. Can anyone provide more information on this type of clamp for a boom arm?
Thanks for this video series, Simon and Jeven! What if our cameras don't have a mic port? I have a Lumix GX85, has a built in mic and I'd like to add a portable mic. Will the Zoom H1N work as a separate audio recorder and bring it into post production? Thanks for any tips. You guys are amazing.
Thank you for this video, I have the most difficult time getting good audio even though I have a good mic, the same one you have: Rode VideoMic Pro+. What I'd love to learn more about is what settings on that mic do you use for different situations? I found that the +20 setting is good for quieter rooms, but the sound can easily sound distorted if someone starts speaking loudly. If I use the default setting on the RODE mic, the sound is too low and I end up having to increase it in post, which adds additional noise to the audio. I can't figure out how to get the best sound quality from this mic even though everyone says it's a good mic. Is the fact I have it attached to an iPhone to capture the audio why it's not as good? Would love another video tutorial about using this specific mic, or your advice, thanks!
Hey Guys, that was a well presented uncomplicated straight to the throat informative sketch. Much appreciated and hope to see more of these focused sketches. It cannot be stressed enough how bad sound can effect the best of videos. People seem to understand that given certain out door activities some times intrusive wind noise is unavoidable. Feed-back is the breakfast of champions, and Jeven I have to say visually this sketch irritated me. Both you guys probably wouldn’t be able to talk if you had to quieten down the movement of your hands.... lol. Most people are the same and that’s ok. Hands the size of your head flashing in my face across the screen is unsettling. The other guys mic setup looked way out of proportion which is a shame because us out here are just as interested in the equipment as what you are saying. Jeven when you held your mic in front of you when talking about wind shields I froze the shot and went and got my exact same setup to see if it was the same. But yours was a longer version of my Rode video mic. I’m sure you must be aware of this. My question to you is why don’t you use a longer lens and frame the shot same as with your close lens. All body parts would then have a natural proportion and things wouldn’t be so in the face.
Thank you for putting so much efforts into making this video. One problem I face is, I use a boya Shotgun mic, Knock off of Rode Video Micro, Even with dead cat, when it's even mildly windy, I won't hear the wind, but it actually cuts off the audio, like literally, i tried recording audio and shaking the mic at same time, and it happened.. the bracket which holds the mic and goes into hot shoe is also decent, not bad. Can you tell what could be the possibily of audio cutting off. I can't use the mic in wind at all. Audio becomes unusable
I think is very important because Im making interviews to some artist and I use two smartphones to record and obviously I can't use the microphones from the phones. I use one extra phone to get this sound and make the interview with a little quality. I thought about using microphones connected to the extra phone but it doesn't work....thx for the video..it's very interesting and I think very important.
Nice video, @ 9:44 you said, you pick your Iphone, how did you get that iphone preset to be in the OBS program. i can't find my phone when i follow your steps. thank you in advance.
Man great info you and Sid are awesome. Love the content... I was thinking maybe how to compose your shots... My house is small and I find it difficult to get good composure as to not make it look horrible.
Hi Jeven, I am going to start a health channel here in CZcams, thatfore I started to do some tests before recording the first video and I have some audio troubles. I got many Rode mics to test for a while, the VideoMic Go, VideoMicro, Lavalier Go, Wirless Go. I have a Dell Laptop and a Canon T3i. I recorded in OBS with and without filters. I have a lot of withe noise or statics. With filters I solved part of the problem because when I talk my voice has the statics on the background, also it sound little bit robotic or opaque/dull. With the T3i I tried all the manual audio levels and there is always a lot of statics that I can clean about 70% in Magix Video deluxe but there is still noise. I got the Zoom H1n recorder because there are videos that suggest that to get clean audio and I was really desapointed, there's static noise from the recorder from level 3 to level 10, not conected to any other device, boosting the audio for the laptop or for the DSLR, I got the same static noise problem but wasting money and time. Even, I got a U Phoria UMC22 hoping that could solve the problem using the USB signal and not an analog signal, but I didn't know I can't connect the Rode mics to an audio interface using the 1/4"-1/8" adaptor. I thought that the audio issue would be easy, I have seen lots of videos with good quality, just like yours, clean and good audio, but in my case I tried all mics, and conexions and can't find the solution. I appreciate your support. (sorry for my bad English, hopefully I could explain myself). Regards
Hey Jeven, I want to use 2 cameras for my interviews on my ADHD on 2 Wheels channel and I use the rode II Go mics and Rode Me. Can you tell me how best to sync my audio with both cameras? Many thanks, Gordon
Mate your probably gonna ignore this comment.. But its worth a shot, you are close to 1/2 million subs and you are get a very low veiw count, that should tell you something is wrong. Try to be relevant, I am a small content creator, my channel is football related, as you know there is no football going on right now and we are currently in limbo. I would love to see a video by you addressing this. Again your probably gonna ignore this.
Great video Jeven! Right now I'm using a Zoom F1 lava mic which works great for a single subject. I can't afford more audio equipment now, but sometimes need to record two people at the same time. Any suggestions for setting this up in an interview setting?
Given that VMPR is really good mic, why should one need additional Zoom recorder? Will it not add additional step to sync in post apart from purchasing a new recorder? Will recording quality better than only VMPR option? Does that mean only VMPR is not a good option?
here is my situation i am recording in a church i want to use the church sound board for audio to congreation and am planing on using rode wireless go mics on priest and other speaking during mass the rode wireless go mics will be feeding into a zoom H6 and output to an iphone camera for broadcast to facebook live am i going to get any feedback from the mics going to sound board and the mics being fed into the xoom 6 if sow what are the workarounds
Thank you very much for the tips, tricks and advice. I am new to film making and am about to shoot my first. My camera (Sony HXR-MC2500) has a stereo mic (ECM-PS1) and I also have a Sennheiser MKE200 mic. There is no comparison between the two. I will be making a short film in about a month and am very concerned about the sound quality. I have no other recording equipment and filming will take place in a kitchen which will be terrible for acoustics. Also, I will be the only crew which means I won't be able to film, swing a boom, operate lighting, etc at the same time. Is there anything I can do in post to get rid of the echo that I am certain will occur? BTW, Wind screen = dead wombat - love it. I have a cousin who calls it a monkey penis.
Great info! Any chance someone knows where I can get a screen like that for my Blue Yeti? My PC's fans are just loud enough that it always picks it up, and cleaning it up in post doesn't always work 100%.
Jeven, the guy that speaks on mics, there seem to be a problem with his setup or skills. On iphone, his voice quality is pretty bad actually (sibilants are not balanced enough to easily understand what is he talking about).
nice advice... will try to improve my audio in my next vlog using yournadvice. i just wish i could have watched this before posting my very first ever vlog 5 days ago...

Final cut animation mabie?
When you're making your video, how do you file them. Do you use a certain software? This video was great.
Jeven Dovey cinematic camera angles/the art of cinematography? Thanks and keep the hustle up fam..

Clean audio for all is a constant struggle. This entry in the series was solid. Thanks for this JD and Sydney
I’m not a total noobie and I found your video very educational. I learned a few things.
Thank you for not releasing a video about the virus. I really needed this info and since I am diving deep into audio. I appreciate you thank you very much for making these videos
Audio is way more important than footage - keep that in mind guys :)
Crappy video quality with super audio > super video with crappy audio

Good useful audio tips.
Audio is probably the most important thing for CZcams... If it sucks people will just stop watching it..
I learned a lot of basic vlogging in your channel, keep sharing more tutorials Sir..
Spot on this Jeven.
I didnt know the bouncing bars was the trouble maker of my noisy footage. ill definetely try to balance em in -12 to -6 in next shot. thanks a lot jeven and sidney!

What about shooting a wedding, how far should your Mic be from the person who marries the couple? Will 5ft away get something?

Keep up the good work. A former sound technician.
Superb. 👍
Thanks 🤗
I'm just getting into shooting video and bought a Rode Videomicro Go. It works fine, but hoping to improve. Your tips were very helpful, thanks!
Great video 💜✨
Great video, I have just recently become more aware of my audio quality in my videos and watching your videos have been a great help.
Nice Tips.
This totally helps. THANK YOU! Love the tips and hacks! Great job gents.
Happy to help!

audio is more that 50% of the experience I think any advise for audio in podcasts?
I'm not at this level of tech yet, but will keep these pointers in mind. Thanks Jeven 😁
You are amazing

Looking at the thumbnail and title I’d say: PLUG IN THE MICROPHONE CABLE 😂
Great video!! My only question that no one ever seems to cover is what do you do for scenes where they are taking then yell really loud?
Which microphone would u recommend with DSLR camera for CZcams videos (indoor and outdoor shooting)?
Hi Jeven, I am going to start a health channel here in CZcams, thatfore I started to do some tests before recording the first video and I have some audio troubles. I could have used a Dead Cat in my latest video. Shooting an interview on the street is tough with cars and wind
Wont help with cars but can remove wind
The Asian Jimmy Fallon :). Just the looks. No fake laugh detected. :)
that was interesting name- dead cat mic.

wont remove background sounds. Its for wind hitting the mic. You can use a noise remover in your editing software to clean up a fan sound
I probably need to invest in good audio and videos too
Audio is half of video 👍
Yeah, great sharing, fke play safe im usually using -6, -12,
Couldn’t you just adjust the audio during the editing process?
Never mind you just answered my question. While I was watching the rest of the video . Sorry..
Jeven, the guy that speaks on mics, there seem to be a problem with his setup or skills. On iphone, his voice quality is pretty bad actually (sibilants are not balanced enough to easily understand what is he talking about).
When is Rode going to start bundling a dead cat with the Video Mic NTG??
speaking from experience, stay away from the Rode Video MicGo.
Terrible mic which picks up frequency from Wifi and ruins your audio.
