      Besides Oranges you can't call Punjab the breadbasket of India as it is not a top crop producer in any of those fields i guess you grew up hearing older Sikhs talk about Punjab as if it was Gujarat or Tamil Nadu it's not its a small state with an economy the size of the Dominican Republic the 15th largest economy in India.

    Okay, the Adidas shoes are so dope. I am the only Indian person in my school and I constantly have to explain holidays and celebrations. I think that's it's awesome that people can learn about South Asian culture without having South Asian people in their life. The campaign was respectful and so cool! Let's see people interested in South Asian culture without mocking or appropriating it! Also, non-Indian people know about Holi via "the color run" etc. but don't know that it's South Asian. It's good Adidas is giving "credit" to South Asian culture.

    I really appreciate your stand on "Cultural Appropriation" that its not a big deal. I also personally beleive that when people do such things where they embrace or try to embrace elements of a foreign culture, their intention is not to "appropriate" it instead its more of a symbol of solidarity which is something that is really needed in today's world.

    • @pizzapizzaheyheyhey
      @pizzapizzaheyheyhey Před 6 lety +7

      Is it really a form of solidarity if their intention is to ride on the wave of being woke and aware without actually knowing the cultural context behind what they are advertising. People have been consistently targeted for choosing to outwardly show their religion. I think this would have been better if they were more inclusive in terms of having brown models or models who are actually sikh, I thinks thats were a majority of the backlash came from.

    Some sikhs groups not all, demanded an independent nation on the ground that sikhs constituted a separate community and could not progress as fast as they wanted to in a hindu dominated country. They began to demand a sikh dominated country. This is the khalistan movement and this movement started from 40's not 90's. They viewed that muslims got Pakistan, hindus got india and they didn't got anything, that's the problem. Now there are no khalistani movement in india but there are some in sikh diaspora not all believe in khalistan.

And seperating and making another country why you think that will solve our problem.. Same corrupt sikh leaders, there will be further sub divisions jatts not jatts ramgariha etc..I know what happened in 84 was a genocide and India needs to do alot to provide victims with justice ..but claiming a seperate land not a good idea.. plus pakistan since 1971 wanted to exploit this movment and provide funding and exploit such feeling in sikh community abroad specially canada.. I understand you POV.. but its indian sikhs who should decide to stay with india or not.. you yourself said ur canadian and jagdeep is an canadian leader so I think canadians dont have any right to determine what Indian sikhs want or not.. You guys should focus on your own country bro..I know your intentions are right.. But its upto Indian Sikhs to decide not Canadians..

    I appreciate when my religion and culture is used to bring awareness and empower the community but its a totally different thing when it is exploited for fashion and money, like in the case of Gucci. With "tie and turban day" or "try on a hijab booth" it is a way of making our culture more approachable and its a way for privileged people to use their power in society to do good.

    With respect to both the Adidas line and the Gucci campaign, I personally, as a Canadian Sikh Woman, found neither offensive. However I see the elements of appropriation in both that have given reason for people to be upset. While there are numerous areas of discussion surrounding appropriation and why certain attempts at being inclusive are viewed as appropriation, I personally see our own collective experience as children of immigrants as an explanation for why these well-intentioned (and sometimes poorly intentioned) campaigns face such backlash. When I speak of the collective experience, I speak of the ways in which as children and teenagers belonging to culture outside of the mainstream we were at some point ridiculed for aspects of that culture. An example would be; being a girl told in high school that her henna'd hands look like she has a disease and then later seeing that same person posting an instagram picture of her at a festival sporting a bindi and henna'd hands. It is so easy for those that ridiculed to co-opt those aspects that they once ridiculed without any understanding or recognition of why what they did was hurtful or wrong. If that same (fictional) girl on instagram gave a shout out to the girl in high school she made fun of while sporting her henna'd hands and bindi, I think that element of hurt and appropriation would be adequately addressed, but that's simply not the case. It's this collective feeling and experience (IMHO) that causes these campaigns to face backlash as it's a reminder of what we were once ridiculed for being appropriated for gain without any recognition of that ridicule.

    Jasmeets missing the whole point seems like he's forgotten what his turban is and what it stands for. In Sikhism turbans are worn religiously not as a fashion statement, if Gucci a brand that is known worldwide and they don't do a little research before stealing from a different culture/religion and understanding what it stands for before slapping it on one of their models there's really no excuse for this and they should respect instead of trying to profit off of it and maybe issue a public apology because no way in hell is this right in anyway straight up.

    • @GsunnyGGamer
      @GsunnyGGamer Před 6 lety +4

      But as a sikh u should be forgiving and just accept it as ignorance. Gucci obviously didn't try to hurt sikh sentiments, they ignorantly displayed the turban. Now it seems like sikhs are claiming to have copyright on that specific style of turban when sikhs are known to have different styles of turbans throughout history. We just look like whiners tbh, its a free world, they didn't hurt anyone directly, people just getting caught in their feelings. This is how muslims started getting a bad rep because their perceived as too orthodox. People joke about Jesus all the time, do u see christians getting caught in their feelings on the news?

    • @trueorient1544
      @trueorient1544 Před 6 lety +2

      But the turban isn't only exclusive to Sikhs. The turban predates Sikhi. Many cultures such as Arabs, Iranians, Afghans, and Indian Hindus have been wearing the turban long before Sikhs so we shouldn't be restricting it to one religious group. I personally don't feel offended by Gucci's actions. Turbans were for the most part worn for fashion.

    FYI, I got nothing against Sikhs and any minorities in India. In fact, I want Sikhs to have justice. What bothers me is that so many people blame all Hindus for the Sikh Genocide or any atrocities that happened to minorities and the same people are the ones who are ready to defend Muslims after any terrorist attacks(I'm totally okay with that). People are always ready to dismiss the Hindu faith, by bringing up the caste system and the issues of racism. I'm not gonna deny all that, but that's not the only thing in our religion there is so much more that is positive.
