  • Let's admit it - finding and understanding our skin tones is a struggle for all of us. In this video I explain WHY finding your skin tone gets so confusing, how we should be looking at skin tone, and what REALLY matters when it comes to finding the right colours!
    Celebrity examples include: Beyonce, Cate Blanchett, Blake Lively, Emma Stone and Rihanna.
    This video is PART 2 of my Personal Colours & Skin Tone series.
    Here are the Topics for PARTS 1 & 3:
    - Part 1: Seasonal Colours - Why is finding your season SO confusing?
    - Part 3: Olive Skin - What does it REALLY mean to have olive skin?

    Mind blown. This is the first video I've watched that actually addressed skin tone vs. color season in this way (i.e. Beyonce being cool but Autumn, RiRi being warm but winter). It makes so much more sense now. My skin is undoubtedly warm but wearing yellow makes me look sallow. Thank you!! P.S. really looking forward to your olive video!

    I think value & saturation is sometimes more important than whether a color is classified as warm or cool. Color is very comparative so you can have warmer/cooler versions of any color depending on what's added to it. Both white & grey can cool down a warm color for instance. So can black. You might not like bright orange or fuscia or red on yourself but be able to wear many shades of pink, peach, coral, rose or salmon all of which are versions of the red/orange color range.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem +4

      Definitely agree! I have a video on seasonal colours (czcams.com/video/BdMk_CZIGnU/video.html ) that explains that exact concept of how temperature is not everything about what suits you best. For me, because bright colours overwhelm me both orange and fuchsia end up looking kinda strange lol.

    Thank you for actually illustrating the white vs cream on yourself. There’s such a huge difference between seeing photos of glammed up celebrities and then seeing people actually colour draping themselves in their videos. Not many people seem to do that and it’s soooo helpful.
    I would love to see a video where you talk through some of the other things you’ve discussed and illustrate on yourself.
    Also what you said about Emma Stone and Rhianna wearing the opposite temp to their skin tone for balance was fascinating,I’ve never heard that before but it makes so much sense!

    I had previously typed myself as a true autumn and can pull off _some_ soft autumn colors, but dark autumn generally looks too heavy on me. Then I felt like some summer colors also work, as long as they're muted and not pastel. With your explanation of clarity and chroma, it seems clear to me that colors with added grey and black tend to work, regardless of the temperature. But not crazy amount of grey as when the color starts looking muddy, it brings out too much yellow in me.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem +6

      Sounds like you have a pretty wide colour spectrum ranging from soft summer to true autumn! As long as you know which characteristic affects you the most that alone can help you so much even without knowing your exact season. In fact, confining yourself into one specific season can make you more confused!

    There are a lot of videos in which people claim Emma Stone is NOT a spring and has been miscategorized by the public because of the dyed red hair and bright blue eyes. That's the thing about using celebrities as examples - they wear so much makeup and hair dye and the lighting of the photos is usually carefully selected so you never know what they're actually like without all that stuff.

    • @stylemejenn

    That orange fuchsia test is hilarious -- I've always tried to figure it out because both colors look good on me, and I wear them both as lipstick. But my shade of orange is more bright, clear and coral in tone. I think this is because I am a bright spring but kind of neutral in skin tone. What I really need in color is a pop that makes me look and feel more alive and vibrant. Otherwise I feel kind of grey and invisible.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem +8

      You’re probably the type that doesn’t get impacted by how warm or cool a colour is! For you it’s the brightness of the colour that matters regardless of temperature! I explain a little more about this in my seasonal colours video so if you’re interested def check it out! 🥰

    • @trishagoodwin4069
      @trishagoodwin4069 Před 8 měsíci +1

    • @florenna
      @florenna Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah, the orange vs fuchsia - most people (probably) won't look that good in either, while Bright Springs are going to look good in both ;D I'm on the fence about it, as both seem to suit in some degree; I believe I'm a Dark (Deep) season, even though my colouring isn't dark per se. But the pure white vs ivory test is so clear - pure white is absolutely horrible! ;) (Though to my knowledge, only True Winters look good in pure white...?) Black always, always looks better than white or grey. Light lipsticks are horrible too, although I can't do *too* dark lipsticks either (which I assume points to Dark Autumn rather than Dark Winter, but not 100% sure). We are always advised to stay away from black, which to me is counter-intuitive and annoying, as black simply looks way better on me than 99.99% of colours!!

Like someone else commented, this quite possibly the most sensible explanation of skin tone variation that I have seen. These videos are mind blowing. I self-categorized myself as a dark winter. Cool toned deep colors usually go better on me. But I can wear true winter colors as well as long as they are not too light. And I can also pull off some warm leaning dark autumn colors as long as they are not obviously orange and they are deep enough. I still prefer wearing dark berry tones but deep bordeoux is not that bad as well. I also don't like too muted grayish colors, I need some saturation. As for lipsticks, I can wear bold colors, they don't make me look vampy or goth. But again, I can't wear dark but muted colors. I can't wear nude colors as well. Even my everyday shade is Maybelline Vinyl Ink in Witty and I saw lots of youtubers categorizing that lipstick as dark or bold.

    Although I have to admit that I still don't understand why the opposite happens, like how many people have their overtone and undertone matched.

    this finally made sense. I always went for the warm colours but when discovering the season i was confused bc my attributes (my hair and skin) are more ashy. But wearing cool colours would make me look sick, while warm colours light me up and fit me like a glove. But also, since i am "supposed" to be a deep autumn (i have high contrast), i was not supposed to wear more mellow colours although i have always reached for creams and beiges and never looked bad on them. So i always thought maybe i am a soft autumn (but obvs i didn't fit the description so back to deep autumn!). Thanks to this video i see that my skin can handle more ashy/muted/mellow colours bc it just evens out my high contrast. On the other hand, when i wear proper deep autumn colours, although they look good on me, i feel like my clothes are SCREAMING, if that makes sense 😅

    That's really interesting to learn the seasonal colors were created by an artist! I am an artist myself and I always think about what clothes and background will look best with a person's features and I usually start my portrait paintings with a straight wash of a color like pink for a cool tone and then build up with flesh tones, so it really does function as an 'under' tone. With Olive, I'll actually go in with a greenish color which can start of looking strange but it looks good when it is all done!

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem +2

      Yes it’s developed by an artist! It can get quite specific (I think there are systems that use up to 24 seasons now) and if you’re interested you should definitely look into the details of the different seasons - they’re subtle differences to some but I personally think wearing the right colors makes a huge difference so I’m sure it would work the same for paintings! 🥰

    lol, my closet is 80% blue (my favorite color), white, black and some reds... totally dark winter colors, but I guess I look too dark in these... my most feared colors for years make me look best... the mustard yellow and warm browns
    I guess I have that "grayness" to my skin that I heard some places that is very well balanced out by autumn colors...
    bright colors are too much, pastel colors and grey make me feel like a piece of cardboard
    I just bought a full collection of neutral to warm slightly muted lipsticks (closer to brown/brick rather than closer to gray)

    The hangar method is amazing, I cannot recommend it and its equivalents enough! I don't hang my clothes, but when organizing folded clothes based on how often I wear them, I noticed I prioritized dark colors first, then bright, then cool. Finding out I'm a Deep Winter was mostly an excuse to do away with all the pastels and champagnes I already had bunched up at the bottom of my stacks.

    Hi Jenn! I saw an excellent video that used the colour of your veins to tell.
    If I remember correctly, you look at the veins on the inside of wrist.
    Veins are naturally blue.
    A yellow (warm) skin tone will have a greenish looking vein.(more carotene? )
    A blue (cool) will be purplish (cool skin tones have more capillaries and red to them).
    I think the olive tones were a kharki.
    This was on Justine Leconte fashion channel.

    Thank you very much for this video and many others on colour analysis! I kept telling the colour analyst who did my analysis that when I go full warm with makeup or clothes, I start looking very sick and odd because there is waaaaay too much warmth in my face then (I have a lot of yellow). While when I use cool colours of blush, lipstick and clothes, my tones look very balanced, fresh, I look rested. She said that’s totally impossible and in order to look good I have to be wearing only warm toned makeup 😂 i think she was not aware of the balancing effect which you mention here. But this totally explains my case!

    The fuschia versus orange test wouldn't work for me because I think I look equally good in both. However if I wear white and cream I can tell I look better in white than cream. Because I don't look good in lighter colours at all so I'm more likely to recognise when something looks bad. I know black isn't flattering on me either. I can wear brights, and darks too, as long as they aren't black. I think I've figured out that I've always been right when it comes to avoiding pastels. Value or light/darkness seems to matter more on me than either temperature or clarity. I have range with both clarity and temperature but not so much with Value. That's actually extremely helpful to understand! I've always been confused because i think I look equally good in, say, cobalt blue, which is a 'spring' colour. As I do in a mid tone dusty blue. So I could never figure out if I was spring or summer. I can get away with both of those colours because neither of them are too light or too dark. And the biggest thing that confused me was that according to seasonal colour analysis I'm pretty sure I'm technically a Summer but all those pale pinks and blues look dreadful on me.

    im a pale olive (confirmed and verified) when i tan, its a mix between deep and warm but i have little redness/pink. very neutral slight yellow tint skin when pale. hate me or love me, olive skin is warm. my hair is a mix between cool and warm. In some pictures depending on the lighting, its light brown with clear golden strands. In other cases, it is deep and dark, little chestnut present (the brown is not an autumn color brown, more neutral). After going through trial and error for YEARS i am a bright spring.

    Two key things here: 1) skin tone is still important and one should know it; 2) something that I realised after this video - one should also know the composition of the colour behind their skin tone. For example, I am on the cooler side, with a clearly pink undertone (so blue + red) and I never liked pink. Started wearing it recently because it is propagated everywhere as the perfect colour for summers - only to realise why I always disliked it. It just does not work - either blends with my skin and then you can barely notice my features or overwhelems me (if I go for too bright for a summer colour). However, I noticed that I look great in blues, lavenders, greens and greys - link to blue in my pink undertone + bordaux or capuccino and brownish colours - link to red in my pink undertone. Can't speak for everyone, but feel the same will likely happen to those with olive skin - some will be leaning towards green (blue and yellow), some more to the orange side (yellow and red), so may need to adjust their colour depending on that.
    Finally, reflecting on example at 9:21, hard to tell which option would be right for Kate, because in these photos light affects how her skin looks. In the first example, her skin is too pink, so the outfit from the second example would work better in that lighting. Meanwhile, the blue from the first example is too bright for summer anyway so I would not go with that at all. This is to explain that I also started to pay attention to the light when planning my wardobe for certain events. For example, I know that yellow light will make my grey outfit look a bit more purple, which still works, because my skin will become more orangey (pink undertone + yellow light)

    My profile pic is literally at the end of autumn and I classified myself as deep autumn. I guess that speaks for itself. However, it is also sunset that makes my skin tone yellow in the pic, I am actually cool toned neutral. But I think I am also deep winter or can pull off that pallet easily. This makes sense tho as the warm tones neutralize the cooler tones in my skin. My skin tone is cool neutral(I can tan an go warmer tho). So interesting and helpful!
    In regards to the colors we reach for. I am always reaching for black because things get muddy and dirty over here. I have plenty of gray pajamas but the clothes i like just dont come in grey, so I get black. I cannot keep white clothes free of coffee stains. So what I reach for doesnt directly speak to what colors suit me the best but definitely hints to but is also affected by environment.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem +2

      Hi!! Thank you so much for the compliment - so glad you’re finding my content informative!
      It’s a little difficult for me to give you accurate recommendations just based on a description, so keep in mind this is a general reco ❤️ From the sounds of it, you might have a warm skin tone but warm colours like orange and yellow might bring out too much yellow from your skin.
      Red is actually “technically” considered a neutral colour because it’s neither yellow- or blue-based (this is pure red I’m talking about), but depending on what shade of red you’re wearing it could be leaning towards warm (if there is yellow mixed in the red) or cool (if there is blue added).
      If you look good in Fuchsia it’s usually a good indicator that you look good in cool (and probably bright) colours, so see if you get more compliments when you wear cooler reds more so than warmer reds, and that would indicate that you look better with cool colours!
      If you haven’t taken a look at my colour analysis video yet (czcams.com/video/BdMk_CZIGnU/video.html), I explain how to distinguish warm vs cool colours for different shades of reds in that video as well 😊

    For years I thought I was a neutral skin tone and only recently discovered I am a peach! You are correct that this is a very confusing area and I sometimes see influencers applying foundations that are completely the wrong shade with the mistaken notion that applying it heavily will compensate for the mismatch. To me the singular most important part of makeup is getting the foundation to be a perfect (or near perfect) match, otherwise it throws everything else off. I sometimes feel like Don Quixote in my quest for the perfect match.

    • @stylemejenn
      @stylemejenn  Před rokem

      Lol love the Don Quixte analogy! I actually find that using LESS foundation makes it easier to match to the skin tone even if the foundation color is not a true match. You're right - caking on more product doesn't compensate for the mismatch. It's actually the opposite!

    • @trishagoodwin4069

      Yes, because I have a slightly yellow tone to my neutral warm skin, I always got sold orange toned foundation, or at least two warm. In fact I need one with pink and just a bit of yellow added, too pink and it goes the other way and looks too cool, ashy toned. I can't tell you the number of foundations I have given to friends or thrown away over the years. I found in the end, having a proper colour analysis one to one and then understanding it myself, was better than all the false/dodgey training that make up consultants get and try to pass on with very little real understanding!

I find Lancome Teint Miracle in shade 02 Lys Rose is about the only shade right for me, although it says rose in the description, it is weevery slightly warm. If I go any warmer, it sits as yellow stain on the skin, any cooler and it looks like a pink splodge, it has to be a very neutral shade, right in the middle between warm and cool and very light toned too. @@virginiav.1172

    This post will probaby get buried, but I took multiple photos of my face (complexion) in different strengths of natural light. I then took digital swatches of my skin, had about 20+ swatches. I then used a digital colour mixer to find out the percentage of red, yellow, blue in my skin. My result across all samples was 14% yellow, 14% red, and 14% blue, and a varying amount of grey or white depending on the lighting. Does this mean I have a neutral undertone? I compared my swatches to swatches from people who have warm and cool undertones, but my swatches honestly look green next to theirs. I can wear autumn and summer colours equally well, but I look awful in any colour that is too bright.

      Interesting - Not sure if the digital color mixer would be able to tell you your undertone since I've never tried, but I'm sure it's more accurate than the eye lol! Sounds like you could be somewhere around the Soft Autumn / Soft Summer palette for your color season

    Using all these tips, I always come out as a soft autumn, however, the greens within that pallet dont tend to look great, my mum even says that the vivid bright, ever so slightly blue leaning greens suit me best, so that confuses me.

      I think there are specific color groups that may be more or less suitable for you in general as well :)

    I have warm overtone but no-makeup makeup look, brown *warm* based makeup doesn't look good on me. In wardrobe, earthy tones, - aside from neutrals like beige and taupe - browns, especially warm browns, if that makes sense, doesn't look good on me. I don't think I look good in hot pinks, but sometimes I think I can handle it depends on the fabric and pattern I guess, pastel pink I think I can handle. But as for orange, I'm not sure tho but I think I can handle.. but nope, not neon green, not light green, not pastel green if that's a thing - although there was a time, I wore a green dress on a banquet, it's light but not very in your face bright green - and that I can handle, I think. Guess I'm more sensitive to clarity (or not) than I'm sensitive to temperature or value. But STILL not sure tho. Bec lipstick, RED lipstick, COOL RED lipstick looks good on me than NUDES or brown based lippies. So I guess, John Kitchener STYLE ESSENCE makes a lot of sense than just plain boxing yourself in seasonal colours
    BTW: I have always identify as a deep winter. but maybe I am a bright winter. BUT I dunno. STILL.

    Can you do the same type of video but with light medium plus skin tones..those are hard to tell apart.

      Hi! Thanks for the suggestion - I've also been asked to do one specifically for darker skins. Let me add these to my topics list!

    I’m so confused! Beyoncé was hard to follow. She’s cool but she looks good in warm! I always feel like I’m neutral or olive but then people tell me now you’re warm olive. Next to warm people I look olive and ashy but next to cool people I look yellowish. I think I’m a deep autumn and I look great in muted jewel tones. The white and cream test doesn’t work on me either 😢

      If the white / cream test is confusing it could also just mean that you're not too sensitive to the temperature of the colors - for example Deep Autumns can borrow colors from Deep Winters since what matters the most for these types of the value / depth of the colors rather than temperature!
