    As an American, I will never understand why Europeans won’t put salary caps on their sports. If you’re born in some town like Middlesbrough what’s the point? Your team will never win a premier league title. Don’t you guys get bored of the same 3 or 4 teams winning every year. It’s not really an achievement if you buy a title and don’t play a lot of level competition. And I’m a man united fan so you know I have know reason to make it more fair for the little guys.

    • @theskankingpigeon965
      @theskankingpigeon965 Před 3 měsíci +1

      While the wages some footballers make are way too high, I don't think a salary cap would be of any use.
      1. Demand for football is fairly inelastic, so clubs would likely continue to charge high prices despite spending less on wage bills, i.e. increasing profits at their workers' expense. Applied to any other industry, the idea is a complete non-starter.
      2. Footballers are often working class, and their wages can go to improving the lives of their families and communities. I would rather they take a greater share of profits than the oligarchs and petro-states that own the football clubs.
      3. It would need to be applied globally, i.e. be FIFA mandated, which would be difficult to do in practice given all the different stakeholders. This would be akin to aligning tax rates across the world - someone will always try to undercut so they can attract the best and improve their league at the expense of the others.

    • @kjn3350
      @kjn3350 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Firstly, unlike American sports European sports focus a lot more on the freedom of clubs to do what they want. Secondly, there's no draft or anything to equalise teams. Implementing a salary cap would mean that teams with great academies would just hold onto fantastic young players and pay them virtually nothing in order to stay under the salary cap - as opposed to loaning them out to lower league sides who can benefit. Also, you'd have to make the salary cap equal across the entire footballing world in order to keep the leagues equal. Furthermore, it would only entrench the top teams more, as if everyone gets similar salaries a player would rather play for a team at the top of the table than one at the bottom. There are plenty of players who are willing to take pay cuts in order to go to a top team.
      Also, the system doesn't work badly. For instance, Middlesborough I believe have reached a Europa League semi final (or even final) since 2000, as well as Fulham reaching a final, Newcastle in 2013 reaching a final (they had only gained promotion 3 years earlier), Leicester winning the Premier League, Aston Villa currently in 4th, Brighton in European competition and plenty more outside of England (Bayer Leverkusen, Lille, Girona). Most teams in the top two divisions of a country will at some point in a lifetime be one of the best in the country, and in England (the country with the most teams like Middlesborough) lower league football is still a big thing and though it doesn't compare to the highest level you get accustomed to the smaller successes.
      The American system only really works in leagues with small numbers of teams and fixed divisions that don't compete on a regular basis with foreign teams. I'm absolutely certain that it would fall apart when applied to the massive international football system.
