In 1942, young Traudl Junge (Alexandra Maria Lara) lands her dream job -- secretary to Adolf Hitler (Bruno Ganz) at the peak of his power. Three years later, Hitler's empire is now his underground bunker. The real-life Traudl narrates Hitler's final days as he rages against imagined betrayers and barks orders to phantom armies, while his mistress, Eva Braun (Juliane Köhler), clucks over his emotional distance, and other infamous Nazis prepare for the end.

Bruno Ganz gave a performance that will, in my opinion, never be surpassed. Not only did he look like Hitler, he became Hitler. Down to his mannerisms, his speech, and the way he could fly into a seething rage at the drop of a pin. It’s a crime he didn’t receive an Oscar for this role. RIP Bruno. You were legendary.
That's a Hollywood lie. You won't find many eyewitness accounts of AH even angry, much less "drop of a pin" rage. The man was circumspect in behavior and polite. Angry at a few generals? Who wouldn't be?
True. You know the role is incredible when it retroactively ruins other movies - any other role of Hitler, including one by sir Anthony Hopkins, now looks like a cheap parody after watching Bruno Ganz's performance. The man just knocked it out of the park, and a long time will pass until we see another actor who would be able to take on this role just as well
To really get into the role Bruno actually invaded Poland
Unfortunately Ganz was a Method actor, so he had already killed 1/10 of Europe before the filming began.
@hardstyle905 it's well documented by many of hitler's aides and generals that he would fly into a rage if things didn't go as he planned, especially as the war wore on
For those who care for the real history, these weren't his last moments outside, but rather a few months before in March. This was just the last time he was ever filmed.
I agree that historical accuracy is very important, but in this case some artistic leeway is allowed I think - after the all this event did happen, just a bit earlier

When he returned to the bunker he paused half way down the stairs, placed his hand on the wall and bowed his head a bit, I felt that, a broken man no matter whom it is, it’s rock bottom.
He didn't suffer like his victims. He didn't see his children being gassed or finding his mother among bodies. Men who were selected to work at the camp selections, had to live knowing that anybody who was selected for the showers died. A lot committed suicide. Hitler had a comfortable death.

What most people here don't know , is that most gatherings like this were heavily screened by the SS (yes even right before the end), and people such as the kids were coached into what to say or not say and make sure no assassins were there etc. So the Hitler Youth leader that mentioned the panzerfaust knew Hitler would like hearing some "good news" even though there's failure all around and the soviets at the gates of berlin by that point. No, he was not the most evil person, he was an very evil person on the wrong place at the wrong time. I'm sure if some evil person these days living around us, came to the same power, comparable crimes will happen again...
@@bananajoe3669 I don't think Hitler was any more evil than Himmler or Stalin or Mao or Kim Il Sung or Pol Pot
Or if you want to go back far enough, just look at the gruesome things the Assyrians dead on the regular. Torture and genocide everywhere.
Stalin was more terrifying to those around him. A word to Beria and you were gone. Hitler would send a failed general home in disgrace. Stalin would have him shot.
Speer got on Hitler's good side by talking about subjects dear to him, like Architecture for example. He even admitted to Hitler he disobeyed his order to destroy all infrastructure so the defeated Germans would struggle to survive on their own. Hitler couldn't bear to condemn Speer, so he let him off the hook. It's impossible to imagine Stalin being so lenient with such a betrayal.
Hitler seemed to crave the companionship his warped personality denied him, frequently spending time with a group of female staff in inconsequential conversation, to balance his traumatic dealings with his generals.
After his second wife committed suicide Stalin hardened himself more, and shunned personal relationships, apart from making his ministers watch westerns till all hours of the night with him. Beria was his closest subordinate, for obvious reasons.
@@bananajoe3669 how can you, as a German, be glad that your country lost the war... The brainwashing is really something else...
@@apophisRO Patriotism is for people who have nothing else than patriotism.
I'm proud about what I have done, not what the people of my country did. And I'm not ashamed about the crimes of my german ancestors, because I didn't do them.
But I'm glad not to live under a NS-regime, because I guess that would no fun.
A lot people in Germany allways say, we Germans have a special responsibility because of our history. But this is not my opinion, my opinion is, that every single person on this planet has that responsibility, because almost every nation has a dark part in his history with massmurdering, slavery or warmongering.
Bruno Ganz did such a perfect job in this
Bruno Ganz should have won an Oscar for his performance.
This scene is almost exactly like the actual footage, please look it up yourselves. They really did a fantastic job with this film, RIP Bruno Ganz
“i wish my generals were as brave as you” damn that hit differently
His generals were very brave. They just knew it was hopeless and were tired of their young men dying futilely.
@@MrAitraining AH was right. Many of them were weak and disloyal. Just like von Stauffenberg et al.
Kaum zu glauben, dass sich das alles so zugetragen hat !
Ich hoffe , dass das Monster nie wieder kommt .
Mit freundlichen Grüßen.
It's February 2022 and we're still waiting for Bruno Ganz' Oscar Award.
1:30 that face just screams "You know the country is going to shit when we need to hire children soldiers..."
theyre volunteers they were there before the war
@@derekchauvin2756 Nope thats not right! My Grandfather had to go to the Hitler Youth and was drafted aged 15, first as "Flakhelfer", when the War was almost over, they got the "Führerbefehl" to go to Berlin and Defend the Führer. He only survived because a tanker near Berlin said to his unit that the war is over and if they go there they will die.So he returned home.
Children, old men and women.
We can never forgive this man. But if you know how his childhood went its quite understandable. He just took advantage of what he was capable of and it got out of hand.
His dad constantly spanked him, which he hated. His brothers died, which he loved and his mother was very sick, and died aswell. Got denied from art school and lived on the streets for ages. Fought in WWI and actually returned with many injuries.
Hope and passion can make your path easier indeed, if you observe it from this side.
Nah its not understandable at all. Spanking and deaths do not justify mass genocide he was fucked in the head.
@@GabuscusBrother Obviously yes, but his father also abused Adolf's mom very frequently. All in all the dude had a shitty life, but it doesn't excuse the things he did.
Man yall need to step up your research on ww2 lol he did not like the jews he thought they were sub human hence had no issues with murdering them...
@@GabuscusBrother Big problems can be caused by little things...
The army shouldn't of sacked after the ww1 he was such a decorated soldier. Also how could the German army deal with the Nazis in the early 30s with less than a 100,000 troops?
Bruno Ganz deserves Oscar.
This film (or Bruno's role) is much parodied which is a shame coz the film and his part is really quite good. It deserves greater recognition.
Ganz made a quality impression of Hitler. All the way through. In Downfall he perfectly portrayed him as a formerly proud, now broken dictator.
