The casting is astonishing. Every actor looks just like their character.
Ganz didn't look enough like Hitler. Ganz had a rounded, rumpled, pug-nosed face. Hitler had a long thin nose, and an almost gaunt face with sunken cheeks. Hitler was also famous for his startlingly blue hypnotic eyes - they didn't even bother to give Ganz blue contacts.
@@IrishCarney His hair is off, but other than that, he looks a lot like Hitler.
@doom. Give him a break, jesus christ, he probably reads alot of history..
@doom. I find it weird that you draw paralells between his knowledge about Hitler and his political persuasion on a history channel. I don't agree with it being historically irrelevant, his eyes might have had something to do with his ability to persuade or charm people, and to me, that's interesting.
@@IrishCarney It's not Hitler so much as the other actors.

Bruno Ganz's performance as Hitler was phenomenal. He deserved an Oscar.
Oscars are meaningless garbage. His performance transcends those silly awards.
How do we know he did phenomenally? I’m not saying he did bad, and he played it passionately, but he’s playing the role as our interpretation of him is. We don’t have video sources of how his outbursts were, or how he even acted, just the word of those who ended up despising him for incompetency

That scene in Downfall has got to be some of the best acting I have ever seen on film.
I agree. Phenomenal acting. Not sure if Hitler had an actual outburst like this though - he may have had a more gradual realisation of reality. Only someone actually present could tell.
@@Simonsvids He almost played Hitler better than Hitler.

@@mashucha Dont confuse the people here, most of us know that Hitler worked as a foreman at the Volkswagen plant in Argentenia, so he clearly had no time.
Translations are never literal but if anybody is interested to learn about this particular line, Burgdorf doesnt exactly say he cant permit Hitler to insult the soldiers. He expresses "My leader, i cant let it happen , you (insult) soldiers that bleed to death for you". Due to differences in word order, this (unfinished) line wasnt translated more accurately.
So the emphasis is less on the insult itself but on pointing out how these men die, possibly even right in that moment), sacrificing their lives for the leader.
Thanks for that. It definitely changes the meaning for me
Thanks
Translations frequently ARE literal... ! You can not say " never ".
Am I the only one who's surprised that Bruno Ganz didn't have a stroke or heart attack doing this scene? He portrayed Hitler extremely well. This particular scene was his crowning achievement in my opinion.
Supposedly, Hitler was quite mild-mannered.
I too always believed the official narrative about Hitler's suicide in the bunker, right up until 2004, when I saw him playing himself in a movie called _Downfall._
They had to thaw him out. If he wasn’t cryogenically frozen, his body would have been physically 100 years old.
Bruno Ganz - Fantastic performance from an underrated actor.
He teleported time travelled, I saw him in a documentary - Look Who's Back which incidentally cant be bought anywhere in the UK or streamed. Clearly the powers that be removed it once they saw he was back.

it helps that they are all german. There are many simmilarities between people of the same nation, even if you go abroad you can tell when someone is from your country just by the looks
Goering was the only real miss. Jodl was older too and not totally bald.
Part of Hitler's climb to power during the Beerhall Putsch period included a time he held a gun to his own head and threatened to kill himself if he did not get his way, the other members relented and his mad climb to power continued. He was ALWAYS a suicidal agent of chaos and pain.

it'd be helpful to see a breakdown of each named officer's title, it gets confusing when everyone in the room with hitler has a title like "general chief of military staff" and they all seem to overlap to some extent

the chief of army general staff in the Heer directly commanded and led the general staff of the ARMY only. they were second in command to the Commander-in-Chief of the Army, and Hitler took the position for himself in order to gain more control.
the chief of the army personnel office was in charge of managing the personal matters of officers and officer cadets in the army.
the chief of operations staff assisted the chief of the armed forces high command and was responsible for overseeing all operations of the entire military. he was also the one who would usually succeed the chief of the armed forces high command.
the chief of the armed forces high command is obvious, he commanded the entire high command of the armed forces which in turn managed all affairs of the military/
Whoever did the first meme of this scene was a genius.
I'm amazed at how well they hired the cast that looked so close to the real men they portrayed.
yes, this was something we noticed too
The actor who portrayed Jodl was the only general that I would say wasn't really resembling him because he appears to be complely bald and overweight and Jodl in real life was more slim but did have thinning hair. 3:23
I like the scene when Keitel goes to the Russians. This small bit hints what happenened before the war.
Bormann was a dead ringer, Hitler was pretty close, the rest of them? Nowhere near. Especially Keitel and Jodl. And Goebbels was very distinctive and creepy looking, the actor they have is also very distinctive and creepy looking but doesn't look like Goebbels.
Evan Friend I agree on Jodl, but the man portraying Keitel is very close in my opinion. Also the actor playing Bormann is much too heavy, although he does facially resemble him.

Yep. It pretty much was lost already then, but he refused to see that. His drug addiction probably contributed to him losing all contact to reality.

The actor playing Goebbels is an amazing lookalike. 06:10 I'd like to know more about Himmler's attempt to convince the Allies to unite with Germany and fight the Soviets.
His real name is skelletor
I think it was a conspiracy because Patton wanted to rearm the German army and fight the Soviets. Maybe it's possible that's why Patton was supposedly killed. We will probably never know the truth.
Himmler was a coward who was trying to secure an out for himself. With Hitler trapped in Berlin and communications breaking down, Himmler tried to assume the position of leader of the third reich in his stead. His argument to the allies was basically that Stalin wasn't going to stop until he controlled all of Europe, which is kind of an ironic plea considering how the war started in the first place. The allies didn't bite, and Himmler attempted to go into hiding. When he was caught, he committed suicide by cyanide capsule.
You want any real information, Mark Fulton is the guy. The stuff he has on his channel will blow you away

This movie is a masterpiece. Even the actors look like the real historical figures.
A couple of the actors look like the real historical figures. A lot of them aren't even close. Traudl Junge wasn't that pretty, Goebbels didn't look anything like that, they didn't even seem to try with Keitel and Jodl. They did get Hitler pretty damn close though, which I suppose is what really matters. And Bormann they got dead on.

Burgdorf truly had massive balls to stand up against Hitler.
I don't thnk he could stand up, if they were that big
Burgdof has medium balls Heinz Guderian had scream matches with hitler
Discipline was breaking down in the final days of the bunker, some people didn't even stand when HltIer entered the room sometimes.

Bruno Ganz (the actor, rest in peace) wasn't personally offended and didn't think people were making fun of him, but in not so many words said he didn't like that it seemed like the meme makers were deflating the importance of the subject matter, or softening Hitler by making jokes. I'm not sure I agree, but I respect his opinion. Should be here on CZcams.
RIP
@@OlOleander The only video I could find was one from 2012 which actually is a parody in itself and is not an interview about the memes at all, the subtitles only make it seem to be about the memes. I understand German and the subtitles on that video are nonsense. Is that the one you are referring to? Or is there an actual video interview done about the memes?
@@OlOleander I like to think there are some people who saw the meme who became interested and went on to watch the full movie or to learn more about history. If that is the case then the meme is great thing that does no harm.
Wow this video is so educational on whole other level
What a great video! Now I want to watch Downfall again :D
When Hitler brings up Stalin’s liquidation of the Red Army high command he’s not suggesting he should do it now as it seems you’re implying... Hitler is lamenting the fact that he did not purge the Army High Command before the war so they wouldn’t have been a hindrance to grand strategic vision
And they was. Hitler knew he needed oil and his generals wanted Moscow. Baku is what hitler wanted and even said if he didn't take baku in 1942 the war was lost..
@@omanvictory4011 The Germans were wholly unprepared to take on the USSR, even after Stalin's purges of the military and party. Hitler, and his cohorts, wrongfully assumed that because the Russians were hopelessly inferior racial specimen, the war would be won in a matter of weeks to months, as was the case with the previous conquests in '39 and '40. They underestimated the fighting capacity of the Red Army, and paid the ultimate price. Added onto that, the fantasies of oil and food that seemed to rest in the vast lands of the USSR were a pipe dream. The German command didn't wholly consider the proportions of such a vast conquest, and the logistics needed to secure it. The war was lost the second Hitler started it in 1939.
@@rosabraun9449 no it was lost with the invasion of the ussr. Hitler could and should of won but invading Russia was a big mistake and really not need. Do you think the germans had the British made peace and germany could of been supplied with oil and supplies from the Americas could of defeated a USSR without american aid?
@@omanvictory4011 I agree with you that the objective of Operation Barbarossa should be the oil field in the Caucasus which many of his generals fail to see but the invasion of USSR is inevitable, Stalin is no saint, he will not honor the non aggression pact just like Hitler
@@lemienkhang if Hitler could of defeated or made peace with Britain, got Spain to join the axis. Remember the pact with Italy and japan meant they too would come to Germanys aid if attacked meaning the ussr had japan to worry about. Also with Britain out of the war the sea lanes would of been open and Germany could be supplied oil and other supplies from the Americas and possibly trade with British empire. Would stalin really of attacked germany if Britain was out of the war considering the purges and weakness the red army showed against the finns and the apparent superior strength of the germans. It's all ifs and buts but it is annoying when historians say Hitler never stood a chance of winning the war which is just not true. After December 1941 the war was lost but before could of been won.
Son: mom, when will COVID-19 go away?
Mom: don't worry son, Steiner will attack and everything will be alright.
Edit: it's almost Christmas and Steiner didn't attack yet, something feels wrong.
xD
steiner....... .
steiner didnt have enough to mobilize the attack.
Kids, rename yourselves to Steiner and let's save the world.
Han Lockhart YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO MOBILISE MASKS!!! WHO IN THE WORLD WOULDN’T WEAR MASK NOW?!!!! EVEN STALIN WEARS IT!!!
proceeds to make them drink poison and die in their sleep.
Top notch explaination!
Thank you for this. I've seen the sports parody versions of this and always wondered what the actual translation was in its historic context.
Legend said Steiner still building an army to make an counterattack
Lmao
Argentinian Reich
Lol WW3 starts and Russia starts rolling tanks into Berlin when suddenly an Avengers End Game style portal opens up with Steiner and 5 army groups.
I see a script for a ghost movie where Berlin is plagued by the ghost of Steiner eternally organizing a counterattack but everytime he almost gets there the ghosts to make up the army are gone and he's back to square one. In the sequel he manages to form an army of zombies (made up from young and old people but no one in between) keeping everyone out of Berlin while not attacking the city itself. Now the German army has to fight its way into Berlin through the Steiner zombie army in an ironic twist of fate. Part 1 will be titled Steiner's Ghost Division, part 2 Steiner's Zombie Army.
This should be made into an anime by the people who made Tanya the Evil.
@@ErwinBlonk Ancient Astronaut Theory, said yes....
And suggest there will be Tanya the devil season 2
Bruno Ganz a Legend! R.I.P.
nobody will even equal his greatness in this role. I hope his immense emotional outpouring, was not a contributing factor in his early death.
what an excellent video. so clearly broken down. i love it.
The dialogue in Downfall was meticulously researched. Moment by moment, conversation by conversations reconstructions from eyewitness testimony close to the time of the war allowed for an astonishingly close facsimile of those last group moments in the command centre of the Third Reich. Scripts which stick closely to historical words can prove wooden for the actor and the audience. However, along with a superb supporting cast, Bruno Ganz's performance in Downfall was IMHO a masterpiece - marrying the familiar Hitler of film lore with a credible, coherent, interiorised, human performance. Astonishing work. It is the most gripping film I have ever seen.
I mean, Hitler's secretary was literally in the movie (though she died before the release), so they had a fairly reliable source.
I just want to mention that I, as a German, am extremely impressed by your pronunciation of German names and terminology. Absolutely amazing.
a german guy/gal with a japanese acc name... woah
@@nayeemhaider8367 u know axis?
@Arnold Squirrel Can you say Shibboleth? :)
Such a silly thing to bring up here. German spelling is largely consistent, the issue is that the German language contains many phonemes that native English speakers don't know. So for someone to put in the effort to try to learn those phonemes just for a few names is impressive.
The reverse is of course true as well, and many native speakers struggle with English language phonemes (and spelling as you pointed out, even if your examples are a bit strange), zats vy such a fing as the klishee German akzent exists. But more of us are learning English and inevitably getting it right than Brits are learning German.
@Mattress Store true and it’s not hurting anyone
