The Moe Norman and Bryson DeChambeau Secret - Part 2

  • Do Moe Norman and current PGA superstar Bryson DeChambeau have a secret? Even though I don't really believe in "secrets" I do believe that swing secrets are simply biomechanical advantages established from how you position the body to strike a ball on the ground with a stick.
    What is a biomechanical advantage? It can be described as a position of the body that creates an advantage whereby eliminating variables. The elimination of the angle of the wrist at address, fully reaching the maximum ulnar deviation of the lead wrist, created a biomechanical advantage for Moe Norman and is also why Bryson DeChambeau is quickly becoming the next great ball striker on the PGA Tour.
    We call this elimination of the angle - The Single Plane Golf swing which starts the club, through the proper ulnar deviation, on the same plane as impact. The Single Plane swing a biomechanical advantage, and not a quick fix golf technique. It is a system, beginning at address, that simplifies the most important moment of the golf swing - impact.
    When you have the ideal lead arm position, you have biomechanically placed your body at address, with the proper spacing from the ball. You have also placed the trail arm in a non-rotational position. Naturally, this is the same position that you would use to skip a rock.
    The combination of the lead arm and trail arm positions produces the perfect conditions to reduce the wrist angle variation during the golf swing. This is how Bryson DeChambeau and Moe Norman mechanically simplify the golf swing..
    About the Single Plane Golf Swing
    Starting at address on two planes where the arms hang straight down at address, the Conventional golf swing is complicated. Because the arms are hanging straight down, a conventional golfer must lift the body into impact creating stress on the back.
    This upward movement to accommodate the two planes is unnecessary.
    The Single Plane Golf swing simplifies the golf swing by eliminating the need for the upward movement by starting and impacting on the same plane.

    First range session to try and implement the Moe Norman swing and blocked most shots because I thought I needed to keep my wrists from “unnaturally” hinging. Apparently they weren’t hinging much at all. Finally decided to add a little wrist hinge DURING the backswing and shots began to go straight and I felt like I covered the ball better.

    Hey Todd, I have been doing Natural Golf since the Golf Magazine featuring Moe on the cover in late 1998 or 1999. I even was a participant in Natural Golf infomercial filmed in Palm Springs with Ron Jaworski (The Polish Rifle) as the moderator. Since then, I have accumulated 2 club championships and numerous SCGA and San Diego sectional wins. I can't say enough about feeling of hitting the ball where you want. In team matches I would get into my opponent's head by hitting my drive and then picking up my tee and never watching the drive, what a psychic job on your opponent! Give it a try, the only thing you can lose are strokes off you handicap !!!

    Based on this video, yesterday I played at Willow Glen Sycuan in San Diego. For the longest time, I had been trying to hit my M1 driver straight lacking absolute success at it. So, I must say that. by using the single plane swing I was able to connect every single shot laser straight. I was amazed at the accuracy obtained for it was a club I was afraid to pull out because it got me in trouble most of the time. Thank you for the explanation. My only problem was that by using the same technique I sent my iron shots slightly to the left every time, so my approach shot was not ideal. My goal: I will go to the range to correct the irons, either by placing them a bit back on my stance, or opening the face a bit, or using a weaker grip.

    Exactly what I just discovered I was doing wrong with my irons, pre-cocking them! I was able to figure it out because I was cocking my wrists correctly with my 3-wood for some reason. Thanks for this detailed explanation though as it is of major importance to the swing!

    I love the concept and simplicity of the single plane swing … eliminating variables can't help but improve consistency of the strike. A few questions though. Can you move the ball - small draw, or power fade - with this swing and how? Years ago, I learned from a coach what he called the single swing plane but with a much narrower stance, a pre-cock of a sorts but the club head was always tracking on a single plane; and we worked with stabalizing the legs to reduce variability and create torque. With that swing, it was slight ball position moves that allowed for the various shots and/or vertical ball flight heights … the whole theory revolved around the circle. I'm curious about the physics / biomechanics of Moe's swing. And how does it generate power? I'm a handsy player, with a dominant right hand through impact; whereas this swing seems to kill the hands. Again, curious. This is a swing I'd be willing to make a change toward. Especially if it minimizes pressure on the joints like the hips, knees, wrists and shoulders while maximizing power and control.

    • @daquattro
      @daquattro Před 4 lety

      In terms of shaping the ball, have a look at Jack Nicklaus's method which mainly focuses on how your body is set up prior to impact. If you draw or fade the ball that way there's no reason why you can't use this swing with it!

    Todd I have to give you a big THANK YOU. I must admit that I tried Moe's swing for a few months years ago and I would often knock down multiple flagsticks on the range, but could not "feel" the swing on the course so I gave up. I realize now my problems stemmed from grip issues, but that is another story. Anyway, I am 61 years old and I have had trouble breaking 80 for 2 years now. It seems I never ever ever hit the green, yet my shots with the driver are generally very good if not excellent. I admit that I don't think our group plays the correct tees. Our course is all carry to every green and I usually hit a wood into most greens, and I can't reach about 4 holes in regulation anyway. I use 1, 5, 7, 9, and 11 woods, and 7 iron and up. Well I watched many of your videos yesterday and went to the course today with the commitment of trying this swing every shot. Today I shot 77 hitting 14 greens, and sinking only one good putt. 10 of those greens were from outside the 150 and 4 approach shots basically hit the flag. Last year, I had lower enthusiasm for going out to the course, but let me tell you, I cannot wait to get out there tomorrow. Your videos have helped me understand the one plane swing. Thank you so much!

    I'm sure people get confused with is that they let there right hands take control of the swing which leads to inconsistency.

    It's nice to know that there's one less thing to think about when swinging the club. Been applying the single plane principles and my slice is gone .just a slight fade or e even a draw. Played last night and off the first tee I drove it 270 and birdied the hole! Normally the first tee is a disaster. My irons and wedge play has also improved, much more consistent. @@ToddGravesGolf The timing was just spot on at impact. I had such a sweet lag and crisp swat into and through the ball... right down the lane, right through that ball the center of my club head chased that 22 inches poetically post-impact, and i had no leakage of power wahtsoever like i normally do with a push or pull near the end of my ball's flight, and my spine angle allowed my shoulders to be on a swivel, hands passing by planted quiet but athletic feet, just pulling that firm left wrist and the just right amount of right wrist angle leading the clubface into the ball. What a day.

    Enjoying your videos Todd. I think Bryson actually works to restrict his wrist movement. You'd have to have strong hands to do that and I would think you'd also have to allow your lead arm to bend at the elbow more. The straight lead arm that I was taught in my early twenties ruined me and ultimately my desire to play. I thought if I didn't keep my arm straight as taught by instructors I couldn't be good and because I could never get it to feel right I gave up on it. I enjoy watching Todd's videos though as they speak to pretty much everything I had in my head back in the late 80's but kept getting taught something entirely different.

    • @ToddGravesGolf
      @ToddGravesGolf  Před 4 lety +2

      Yes, Bryson keeps the wrists relatively passive although when you bend your trail arm, the wrists do have some movement. The point is that it is not a conscious movement - like skipping a rock is not a conscious wrist movement.

    Interesting stuff! Other than the resemblance to impact what is the value of radially deviating the lead wrist. Obviously the lead wrist will radially deviate at some point in the backswing and then ulnar deviate at some point in the downswing? Do you think that ulnar deviation may promote getting the club head too far inside the hands on the backswing?

      Somewhat however, think about it from a "high Speed" perspective. When you are swing at high speeds, you need to eliminate variables. This is done with Ulnar Deviation of the wrist, and some other factors. With short game shots, the club is not moving at high speeds however, I do place my wrist in full ulnar deviation in chipping, and pithing. Bunker shots too but this depends on the lie and shot of the ball. I will explain in a later video.

My left arm bends in the swing as well but as long as you are hitting your positions you can still get that feeling of greatness. The more important thing with the left arm if you ask me is that the elbow and knuckles at contact need to be aimed at the target. If you can accomplish that along with having club face square every swing then you will send the ball down the pipe and not left or right no matter if your left arm bends or not. This is at least my experience of hitting over 100 balls a day for 3+ months. I would say you should sign up over at Todd's site you can start for $27 members.singleplaneacademy.com/join/

    If you want to talk Bryson's swing in your context you need to look back to 2015 vs now. In the critical transition from backswing to downswing no reputable biomechanics person would say he is swinging on one plane. Club is so far across the line and we all know it is going to get a little steep on the way down, shallow some and the shaft will be between his arms between P5 and P6. But that isn't single plane. That is single plane for a few frames of the swing. Big difference. Compare his NCAA swing with any swing from about 2017 until now. Huge deviations, and this isn't going to end well.

      @@ToddGravesGolf I am not sure... I feel like everything is in order and I don't feel like I'm cupping the wrists at the top but my clubface is pointing straight down at the top

      @@Kylez1212 we’re not very good at guessing when we can’t see the students swing motion. Did you know we have one of most comprehensive online instruction academies in the industry? You can actually send your swing video into one of our coaches and get a personal lesson. This way the coach can tell you exactly what the issue is. If you’re interested you can email toddg@gravesgolf.com and I’ll connect you into the single plane Academy.

    "Page 88 of your book, From down-the-line-view, the hands hinge the club upward as the trail arm folds to the top of the back swing..."hands hinge to form the leverage angle......so we now want to be more like Bryson and NOT set that hinge just let it happen Right

      The trail arm folds and The hands hinge upward. Just don't make it conscious. let it happen like you are skipping a rock.

    Todd, I would like to see you do a video starting from address to finish position with your brother being the model. It appears some of his swing positions are more pronounced.

    Sorry, but that swing style looks, well, not normal. I can see it can be more consistent, but it's doesn't look natural and it looks like some power is lost with it too.

      Natural? Hit a ball on the ground with a stick and you will see the same natural Motion.

    Poorly named video. Considering Bryson is using 100% of Moe Norman's Swing. It's The Moe Norman's Secret and his alone!!! Love watching your video's though.
