- August 8, 1985, KMOT-TV, Minot, ND - They're commonplace now, but back in 1985, the Automatic Teller Machine, or ATM, was groundbreaking future tech. They appeared in the marketplace a few years earlier, but now they were really taking off as a financial service and option. There were classes to teach you how to use the machines and how to integrate the new-fangled service into your daily life. When a bank installed a new ATM at the mall, I did a story showing how the machines worked and what it meant for the average consumer. It all seems laughably simplistic today but, believe me, the idea of a computer automatically checking your bank account and then dispensing cash was something revolutionary to everyone back then. Heck, the public Internet, online banking and PayPal were still a decade away. Transferred from 3/4 inch videotape via ADVC 300 and into iMovie HD. From Keith Darnay's personal video collection.
I'm 30 and find all these old news stories fascinating for some reason.
The machine won't replace humans. .. lol.
"Won't replace humans"... Been in a bank lately? There's like 2 employees in the whole place.

Times have since changed, even though these machines were state-of-the-art at the time of their introduction. Today, banks like Bank of America and Wachovia can deposit cash or a check directly into the machine, and it gives you instant credit for it, even on Sundays!
wow this comment is so old.
I slip and refer to ATM's as Ready Tellers and feel pretty ancient.

Faster than current machines...
Keith: I love this. Do you own 100% of the rights? Is there any chance of licensing pieces of it for a current bank commercial? Thank you! GravityMediaProductions.com
