- The drive from Nababeep to Port Nolloth was a longer drive than we usually take, but we could make up some time because it was a tarred road all the way. Driving through the Namaqualand region was absolutely incredible. The beauty of this stark landscape was good for our soul. The first thing we did as we arrived in the small seaport town of Port Nolloth was to buy something to eat and fish and chips was so appropriate. After a delicious lunch, we started to explore and found this to be a beautiful little town. The houses all along the beach, the seaport and the coastline all made a great impression. Of course, we couldn’t come to Port Nolloth and not visit McDougall’s Bay. The caravan park and all the cute cottages were stunning! When a "nothing emptiness" is exquisitely beautiful. I wondered why my brother was always trekking to Springbok and surrounds, now I understand why.
I have to agree with you. We found ourselves referring to 'nothing' and even 'absolutely nothing' as we were driving through this area, but yet we found it stunningly beautiful at the same time! A truly unique landscape. 🤩🚗
I commented on a previous clip about visiting Strandfontein every year driving through Calvinia, Vredendal and even lutzville for year end holiday with my future in-laws. Fell in love with the West Coast in 1970s. Watching these clips fills me with nostalgia. Determined to make one more trip to this area and explore a little. Makes my day to watch you visiting these little towns. Nothing more beautiful than Karoo and Namaqualand. Drive safely

My childhood holiday travels meant traversing the road from Oranjemund in SWA to the Cape every December and somewhere closer like Clanwilliam in June, and for sporting events to Steinkopf/Vioolsdrif and further/Springbok etc more frequently. You would have loved it, gravel all the way. And from Port Nolloth to Anenous Pass was notoriously switch backed. Instant motion sickness cos the father loved racing the Chev along it, ag pleez don't daddy.... Not to mention the wrecked trucks littering the pass, rolled down the hillsides etc. A different world.
But when we passed Springbok we knew we were on holiday.
Wow, those sound like amazing travels in these areas back in the day! Thinking back to Anenous Pass now, I can imagine trucks having a hard time there in some places. I also think of Springbok now as a place I could go on an extended holiday and not only for one evening, we both love that town! 😍🚗
Compared to what portions we get in Cape Town, that hake looked liked Pisces Neglectus to us.
It was actually very good and portion control is a great thing, especially with the two of us! 😁🐟
I am diabetic and fish is unfriendly food, so smaller portions are okay. But I am spoilt by my unconventional fishmonger in Hout Bay, a tad hidden, or the Waterkant street dudes near Picbel, or Harbourview in Simonstown. Manny De Gouveia in Kuils River. Got myself drooling now, like a tiny baby with no brain and just one huge drooling gland.
When you live in Springbok, you either drive to "Port" or "Alex "
Yup, we heard those abbreviated town names a time or two while travelling through the Namaqualand region. 😁🚗
There were quite a few British military blockhouses in O'Kiep. Towards the end of the Anglo-Boer War British troops arrived in Port Nolloth on their way to lift the Boer siege of O'Kiep so I think it's quite possible that those fortifications in Port Nolloth were also originally blockhouses as these were built at strategic military points, including railway lines.
We got so caught up in the copper mining history at Okiep, that we completely overlooked any and all war history and associated sites around town. 🤷🏼♂️ Thank you for the info, it makes complete sense and Sonia initially had the thought too, but we thought they couldn't be because the railway line is no more. We live and we learn! 😁🚗
Great video you two, surely theirs some development since my visits in 1999 and 2001 my friend Mostert. Remembers the hotel, Portuguese restaurant, cray fish factory. Last visit was in August .... shivering cold. There is a bank one mile in the ocean that is not accessible for big ships. Remember also a clean town and a spectacular Annanous Pass

That little round blockhouse looks just like a little Martello tower. These are little forts that were built in the UK. It could have been for defence. I have a suspicion the water tower started off as a Martello tower and was later converted into a water tower. Dunno, but its fun to find out isnt it! Parts of this town are really lovely in a deserty sort of way. Would love to go explore all those rock pools! Love to look at the creatures in them. Had to laugh. Out here in Maori language, kaikai is to eat, or food.
Sonia also had the thought that they were somehow relics from the war, so you may very well be right. So the water tanks were placed on top of the base. That makes so much sense actually! How interesting that kaikai has such a different meaning in Maori. Languages remain one of the most intriguing subject matters there are! 🗣️🚗

I lived in Alexander Bay for 25 years and drove through Port Nolloth in the 70's, 80's and 90's when we went on holiday ... and in your video I actually saw more of Port Nolloth now than in all those years 😁.
What a beautiful country. Dustbugs, you make me laugh. You are the only channel that highlights sign posts WHICH I LOVE. Usually when channels show traveling on a beautiful road I'm interested in WHERE they are. I see the sign post coming up and my anticipation rises ... THEN they edit the video just before the sign is legible AAAARRRGGGHH. Keep up the good work. You guys think logically. Of COURSE WE WANT TO KNOW WHERE YOU ARE!! 🤣🤣

Oh that was wonderful and I'm even more glad than you guys for the visit. We passed through there in 2017 en route to the Richtersveldt. My memories from the 1950s was of mist, the strong smell of crayfish shells drying on the roadside and Anenous Pass- sometimes a Leyland truck from Joel Transport in Springbok would come to a bad end, ending up in a ravine. What a pity the museum man has passed on- he was a wealth of information. I believe some of the very old original houses were imported from Europe (possibly Scandinavia). So nice to see the investment and creativity of the new 'settlers'. A BIG thank you.
It seems as if Anenous Pass is quite notorious for trucks making it their final resting place. We didn't see any wrecks, but I can think of a place or two there that would make them squirm a little. We were super sad to hear the museum had closed down when the curator passed away. So all the stories have also stopped, that's really sad. 😥 We thought you might be happy that we visited Port Nolloth, glad you enjoyed! 👌🏻🚗

"Pill boxes". Used in the 2nd world war to shoot and defend from. It would seem that the water tank on top of one of the remnants was just a great innovation. Hope that helps :)

I think one could call Port Nolloth a desert town, with the white sands around.

I did sit and stare out over the ocean for a good few minutes, I must admit. There was something about the shades of blue that really had me mesmerised! 🤩 We loved those white cottages too. So much! It's true that Port Nolloth is absolutely surrounded by what we would also call desert, but what an incredibly beautiful desert it is! 😍 Thank you for being so understanding about our mic issues, we were blissfully unaware until we got home and I started editing. 😨

We had no idea that this pass has caused the demise of many a truck and I'm sure other vehicles too in its day. 😨 I loved the peacefulness down by the ocean and those waves could easily have swayed me to sleep. I used to live in the 2nd house on the left infront of kai kai. Sad to hear hear the owner of the museum passed away😢 Also the catholic church was a church of mother Teresa and is now also a school i used to go school there.
I was born in Port Nolloth. Lived there for 10 years when growing up.

Blockhouse was actually a stand for the water tank for the old Namaqualand copper railway to the sea.
There is still a short section of railway line crossing the main road near the Spar. Also a boxcar and Funkey locomotive on display.

Some years ago our family traveled to Port Nolleth as being the furtherest we could travel from home without needing a passport. I remember that hot road trip to Port Nolloth, the wide spaces of apparently nothing much which quite besutiful in their starkness, and the town which in January was so cold we had to wear puffer jackets. The town was a huge disappointment (don't ask me what I expected), and my lasting memories are the beggars everywhere -even in the supermarket, the colour of the sea, the diamond mining boats and the icyness of the Atlantic. We won't mention the dead cats lying along the beach front road. I was pleased to see your much better experience of this town. Thanks for thememory.

@@DustBugsTravel I live in the UK but fell for South Africa and travelled mostly in the Eastern Cape although i came to Hopetown near Kimberley in the Northern Cape. So the sight of these small mining towns brings back good memories!!!

We loved the setting of the town, the landscape is so unique. 😍🚗 It was rather warm when we were there and I believe it can get pretty chilly in winter.
Nice memories. I took a drive through from Springbok to Port Nolloth. It is such a memorable trip. Managed to get Snoek from the Fishermen just as they came in from the Sea. It was yummy after we did a braai at my Niece's home in Bersig. The only thing i did not enjoy was skelpad with my Snoek.

Great video you two... Im from Port Nolloth and you captured it beautifully. There is one piece of Port Nolloth you missed and that is the "Soutpan"... I think you wouldve been intrigued by it...
And the De Beers boats you saw ,its just maintainance boats that De beers use to collect parts and food onshore for their big vessels that lie and mine in deep waters...

Glad you enjoyed this episode! As far as I understand, the Scotia Inn in Port Nolloth is the only hotel there. We drove past it on the way to the harbour, you would've noticed it. 👌🏻🚗
Nothing much has changed since i was last in port nolloth . I lived there for 6 years and a happy time . I would like to return there one day .scottia inn has been there for years . My daughter also has a soft spot for this little town . The copper ore was delivered by the train clara . The wooden quay was for cray fish boats . When i lived there the population was 7000 of which the coloured community numbered 5 000

It was our first visit, so didn't have any frame of reference to compare to. I hope you and your daugther can return to this town one day which clearly holds a special place in your hearts. 😊🚗
You say the Museum doesn't exist anymore? Grazia de Beer started the museum but she passed away in 2007. She was a lovely lady and an amazing cook!! We used to stay at the lovely Bedrock Lodge a lot while shooting documentaries there in the early 2000s for Fokus on SABC2. Grazia cooked the most amazing prawns for us. We also used to get fresh fish from the fishermen in the evenings to braai ourselves. I believe someone took over the museum after Grazia's death, in other words, this person has now also passed away and nobody is taking the museum further? Do I understand that correctly? Port Nolloth is my favorite town in SA!! Just a pity the houses are so expensive, otherwise I would have been living there years ago!! The town has grown tremendously since my last visit about 20 years ago!! Thank you for bringing good memories back with this video!
We were told that the gentleman who was taking care of the museum, passed away and that no-one was continuing with it, yes. The building or premises are now occupied by another business, so the info seems accurate. The sign still hangs on the main road and we followed it and asked a gentleman when we arrived in the street. He gave us the info. We were saddened by it too because it seems as if Port Nolloth has a very rich history. 🤷♂️😥 I'm glad you were reminded of good times in your own life! You must have some pretty amazing stories to tell yourself from all your travels while filming! We're glad you've joined our travels now! 🚙🤩
@@DustBugsTravel It's really sad that nobody cares enough to take the museum further. Life has become so hectic and many people are only interested in their own small little worlds, they don't care about things such as history and preserving memories, etc. To me, it feels as if Grazia never even lived there, although the pier is now named after her. Her whole life's work was just erased like that. Very sad. Port Nolloth is a very very special place with those huge bells that signal warning signs in the waves....and it is a magical place when the mist literally rolls in from the sea. Makes it look all spooky at night - amazing! We had a few ghost experiences there and also in Kamieskroon. There is a pass on the other side of Springbok - a farmer took us there one evening. Die Wildeperdehoekspas......it was made by hand by prisoners with balls and chains. Many of them burnt to death one night when the place where they were kept burnt down. The ruins are still there. They say sometimes you hear them scream at night. Beautiful pass but sad when you think of that. There are some really good stories out there!
There is attractive tourism side at Port Nollorth (5star hotels, theme parks and how is the ocean

2:03 - Just found out recently that the remains behind the water tower are the remains of the Klipfontein Hotel and train station, and then directly opposite on the other side of the road about several 100 meters is a grave yard of Anglo-boer war soldiers...

Hi guys..i just love watching your travels..something caught my eye in port nolloth..on one of the boardwalk entrances to the beach theres an overhead sign that reads...namaste...thats a hindu greeting...i dont think any indians live there...i could be wrong...or maybe someone there practices hinduism...i dont know...maybe if you could shed some light on it..thank you once again for a great channel...god bless

The 2 boats you saw in the harbour with the de Beers logo on it,are the Agatoa and the Aukwatowa,they are the supply ships for the De Beers Marine diamond mining vessels( Debmar Atlantic, Debmar Pacific, Gariep, Grand Banks and Mafuta) thats mining of the coast near the Orange river mouth,about 20 km from the coast.
How interesting! 👌🏻 I remember seeing the Debmar Atlantic in the Cape Town Harbour a few years ago while it was being tested for metail failure. Impressive vessel! 🤩🚢

Our vehicle was not suitable for the condition of the roads in the Richtersveld at the time. We definitely have it on our list to return to the area another time in a more appropriate vehicle, but we haven't made firm plans yet, so can't give you an indication of when that'll be. That round brick structure in the beginning of the video was a base for a watertank for the train(Clara) on the railwayline to Port Nolloth. There where you found the second watertank,was a hotel back in the days. Annenouspas😁😅 Annenous actually is a nama word that means,well I cannot say the word here,but a Anne means ostrich an a nous means a part of a woman's body
Thank you for the info! 👍🏻 Our research also showed that it was the base for a water tank. Another viewer said the bases were actually pillboxes, similar to blockhouses, which were used in the Anglo-Boer War and the water tanks were a clever use of the remaining structures. That makes sense too. 🤔

I imagine it looking similar, but I don't really know. It's one of the places we'd still love to visit, but we'll need a different vehicle for that part of the world. 🚙😁

Pity the museum died out. The caravan park ablutions seem far from some sites. People with limited mobility will understand. Caravanning is alive among sixty plussers
We were also very sorry to hear that the museum died with its founder and that no-one was willing or available to continue with his work and legacy. We were rather excited when we saw the sign on the main road, pointing to the museum. We had to wonder what happened to the pieces that must've been so thoughtfully collected and gathered over a period of time. 😢
Springbok Lodge & Café has tremendous photos, artefacts and info, also Pearl at Springbok Tourism. Clara is a replica, not original, I was told by locals. Blackie, built in 1859 by Haw & Inglis, is SA's oldest locomotive and plinthed on Cape Town Station. Eric Lomax, The Railway Man, visited and described her on Dec 19, 1939, en route to WWII, on board the HMS Ark Royal
I'm not sure they'll put a National Monument sign on a replica, but I don't know for sure. 🤷🏼♂️🚂

If you look closely next time, you can see the last traces of the old railway line at the back of the blockhouse, and from where you you were standing, looking left and a bit further to the west, you would have seen and old ammo storage house as well (so I was told). If you know what to look for you can follow the railway line up to Steinkopf, and down the Annanous, from there I lost it towards the Port

@@DustBugsTravel they can handle quite a bit of wind. been flying model aircraft for quite a few years now, also fpv etc.......but yes if you loose it it bad.

Hit the road to Alexander Baai...then all along the orange river to Sendelingsdrif...if you got a pasport and the pont is still in operation cross over to Namibia..from there to Ross Phina...then Aus and then Luderitz...you will not be disapointed...Kolmanskoppe at Luderitz is a must !!! If not...go from Sendelingsdrif to Eksteensfontein and you will eventually end up in Steinkopf again...from there follow the orange river back to Klein Pella and Pella then Pofadder...Enjoy !!
