I was a backer of the original Kickstarter and I admire the will behind the project. There was a time when I was even interested in investing into their crowd investmant campaign but they found someone who took the whole piece of the cake offered. I do not care not having the originally advertised slide film - P30 and orto is good for me. The promises for backers were plenty and thinned out with every new one to a discount on orders for a (very) limited time. But things are as they are and I'm not angry because I see the efforts scaling down their production into the former developing lab and I really admire that. A lot of knowhow was rescued or newly aquired and I'm really happy with the P30 in 120 which also took a long time to materialise, I still need to shoot the orto but I wish it would be available also in 120. Anyway even if the start was bumpy there is product and what's even more important there is a production that seems to work constantly. No prototypes or experimental but useable film. So I say "Bravo Ferrania, avanti!" (Pardon my Italian)

Very cool to have an update and highlight the important milestones they have reached. The color KS project will keep haunting them (rightfully so) but if they finally get on track to do what they wanted, this a major achievement for them but also the film industry. Having more players offering conversion is a big deal that people don’t realize about.

I like the idea of P30 variations, and I 100 percent want to see this color film. I know the Kickstarter has been a millstone, but also I still don't get that people don't understand that Kickstarter isn't a mail order catalog ... But yes, PLEASE visit the factory. I would love to see this and for them to prove some level of transparency. I've shot a lot of the newer stuff (not this matte box version, though) and I'm really starting to get a feel for the contrast and how to best handle it. It's truly a beautiful film.

Watch Ferrania struggle, was the first time I got a really eye opener to the struggles with bringing a product to market when you don't have the background of doing it, plus, the trouble of not starting from scratch. HOWEVER, I am still keen on Ferrania bring Solaria back cause I fear Fuji will stop Velvia sooner rather than later and probably also, just very sudden.

@user-ti9zc1xv2b So when was Velvia last manufactured? Because this is now 10 years that this dumb rumor has been circulating. No color film, even 'cryogenically' frozen, stays in perfect spec that long. Perhaps not ironically, I suspect this is a similar reason for all the bitterness towards Ferrania...and why? Because neither of these companies are hyper-engaged on the internet, and don't care to stroke the egos of the uninformed gossiper. I can remember a time when it was sufficient to just make a great product. So I'll leave you to your own devices while I continue to enjoy my freshly manufactured Velvia.

Since I was a young boy in the early 1960s, I had good experience with Ferrania colorslide 35mm film, and some 100 Ferrania slides are still alive in my slide collection. In between, Ferrania had been distributed by 3M. Today I know Ferrania Orto (orthochromatic b/w 35mm film, 50 ISO) and P30 ('P' for panchromatic, 80 ISO). I think a cool film would be a C41 black and white film like XP2. It would allow them to start developing the color film in a simpler form and help fund them. Also a 100 iso c41 black and white film would be dope.

  • @Kerberos2233
    @Kerberos2233 Před 10 měsíci +8

It’s strange that the P33 film would be ISO 400. In the past, the number after the “P” used to be the DIN speed + 10. So P30 has 20 DIN=ISO 80. P33 existed in the past and had 160 ISO (23 DIN). There was also P27, 40 ISO /17 DIN film and some more. A 400 speed panchromatic film by Ferrania should be called P37 by this logic. But anyway, thx for the update!

I know you didn't necessarily intend it to sound bitter, but I wish you had not said Ferrania "failed"/ was a "failure" so much. (I lost count of how many times you said it). I think Ferrania deserve much more credit than that. They are only a "failure" to those who insist Kickstarter is/was a color film pre-purchase site. They are a complete SUCCESS in my eyes, including fulfilling the actual/stated purpose of Kickstarter, which was to save one of the last remaining film factories. And P30 is a gorgeous film stock, perhaps the most beautiful B/W film emulsion currently being manufactured anywhere.

Thanks for the update on Ferania! I bought a couple rolls of 35MM over two years ago and was a little disappointed. I think you helped me figure out what was wrong: Instead of rating it at 80 ISO, I should have rqated it at 64 ISO. I still have one roll of 35MM left and I'm going to shoot it at 64 ISO. I am hoping to buy some of the 120 Film Stock. I'm basically a B&W Photographer, so the color side of the company is not a disappointment to me. In fact, any activities at Ferania are exciging to me. 64 ISO, no its sensitivity is lower than that. 80 to 64 ISO is not even a half stop difference, pretty negligible. I shot a roll pulled back at 40 ISO, and I think contrasts and dark areas look OK (discrepancies of exposures put aside). Some say the real sensitivity is even lower.

I have never tried Ferrania so far, first of all, because Fotoimpex does not carry it and that's like the place where I most of the time I buy stuff. I have been looking at P30 120 recently, but it seems to be sold out everywhere.
I wonder if they simply can not keep up with demand by producing film as much as they are capable of or that they make a batch this week, the next batch in 7 weeks, than one in 3 weeks, then it takes 3,5 month to finish the next one.

I am fairly new into proper film photography, I’ve been shooting it for years alongside digital but on a very surface level. My trusted mz-m breaking made me do more research and now I have switched fully. One of the things that I notice and bugs me is how many films say they are x iso but need overexposure by a stop or something, I though iso was an international standard, so how does it work that you have iso X but have to over expose a stop, surely thats just makes it iso 1/2X?!!

If they are not closing fully (which they have not), it indicates that success is seen. We shall see what the future will bring...

Film cannisters have Q3 codes. My P30 and Orto, both shiney boxes, lead to different unique production codes, but also both data said Orto. And both had a production date om 01/01/1980, but I think that is not right.

Solaris was an okay color film but nothing comes close to Ferraniacolor and if they bring this one back, they also need to bring the chemicals back, needed to develop the film. It's not compatible with any currently used process. I miss the look of Ferraniacolor, it comes close to Kodachrome. The sharpness, the striking colors. Nothing can beat that, not even Kodak Ektachrome E100.

I used Ferrania P30 once and it was a disappointment. The film came out under exposed. Maybe the development wasn’t done properly or I made the mistake to use a Yellow filter.
I have another film. Any tips? Thanks 🙏🏼

Maybe it was the Yellow filter, I used both format (35mm and 120) and had great results! High quality film with very small small grain (and of course very very contrast)

As a motion shooter I’ve been continuously let down by this company. As an original backer for 16mm reversal I was never able to convert my backing amount despite numerous attempts to any sort of store credit and gave up. They’ve been present at many events over the last several years but then come the very long periods of silence. I recently received an email as a backer letting me know that the US-based company who managed the crowd funding campaign no longer exists- basically absolving them of any sort of legal liability towards backers. I think they’re optimists but if they’re really capable of slitting and perfing motion stock I don’t get why they don’t pick up the market Filmotec/ORWO all-out abandoned 3 years ago and at least do P30 in ANY motion format. The motion shooters were the most motivated to back them after the discontinuation of Kodak color reversal in 2012 (at least Fuji still existed for stills shooters back then). Churning out some B&W 35 still every few years is hardly any consolation to the people who genuinely wanted them to succeed from day 1

Speaking of struggling film manufacturers, it looks to me, at least from a USA viewpoint, that Bergger may be on the way out. Stores still list it as backordered, but it's been that way for at least three years. Also, Adox products are being de-listed; no one has CHS 100 II anymore, or they have it as a clearance item, except for some leftover 3.25x4.25 sheets, and B&H in NYC shows CMS 20 II 4x5 as discontinued. You could say that, like Ferrania, these are both resurrected brands; are they all failing? Or are they doing well, but only in Europe?

@@nathanpiperphoto Bergger is a French Company and I don't know who owns it; as far as I know, Adox is owned by Fotoimpex in Berlin. No relation.

I think Adox is doing okay. Fotoimpex just renovated their store.
I occasionally buy HR50 but the chemical are the cool thing about adox. After Kodak sold their chemical department, Adox starter releasing improved clones of Xtol and D76.
I couldn't buy the 5l Xt-3(Xtol) because the demand is so high.
BW film is pretty safe. The concerning thing is that only legacy brands achieve 400ASA.

"Stung"? I mean it was really, really clear (to me) that the money was for saving the factory, which they did. (I was an original supporter like you). They were totally transparent and engaged up until a few years ago when they basically ceased having an internet presence, I suspect from being exhausted by dealing with comments like yours. Kickstarter was not/never claimed to be/ a pre-order site for color film. P30 is gorgeous by the way. One of my favorite all time B/W films
