- This 12-minute road adventure across Luzon Island, Philippines, offers images of an historical, but modern-day flavor. Thinking of America's observance of Memorial Day, I could not help but recall the ties that bind within the century-long Phil-Am relationship. It takes back at least to 1898 and the Spanish-American War era.
For those of us who lived, or currently thrive on the Philippines experience, here is a rare chance to sit back and gaze over my shoulder, at more recent scenes recorded.
No matter where I go, I'm asked: " Wasn't Clark Air Base and Subic Bay Naval Base destroyed by Mt. Pinatubo?
Fact is; Both masses of commercial enterprise and human effort have developed with a new look. No. It is clearly not the same.
While my past efforts have visually-delved into Clark's images, captured during and including 3 1/2 year prior to the Mt. Pinatubo event, much footage also was captured at the sprawling Subic Bay/Cubi Point complex. Return visits have yielded great video of the many changes at Clark, Subic and Camp John Hay, in historic Baguio City.
While the (before/after) DVD is yet to be developed, I hope these images will offer a nice journey across memorable Luzon Island.
I remember 1965 riding in a airforce bus fromsubic bay Navy base to Clark air base wasn’t on a nice road like this it was a little wining rds thurmountain like country wit a wild Air Force driver what a ride

Is just great, the sunsets in the Philippines are the most
beautiful there are. A few days later aboard ship at sea,
I had met a Philippines Navy Lt jg who turned out to be my
Own cousin, his great grandfather Kearney & my great grandfather
Kearney are brothers, my great grand uncle stayed in the
Philippines after the Spanish-American-FIlipino war, so I
Do have family from my side that are living in the Philippines.

the girl in the toll booth handing back the change clearly saying, "salamat po." :-)
In 1968 on our way back to Clark from Subic our car broke down and we had to take a bus home. What an adventure...
How?
They made that hiway a lot better since I traveled on it back in April 1966 on my way from Clark to Subic to catch up with the USS Ranger. I think the bus driver had his feet on both the brake and throttle at the same time to dodge all the foot and water buffalo traffic on the road. Plus one hand on the horn button all the time. Arrived at Clark wearing my Dress Blues and whew first thing went to find a place that I could get changed into my dress whites.
What a changin 55 years
Pretty place
The last cavalry charge, by the U.S. Army, took place just outside Olongapo. The Japanese soldiers totally freaked out and ran away.
That’s before the expansion.
