  • Ted Price chats with Todd Howard about Bethesda's much anticipated spacefaring RPG, Starfield. Together they discuss the early ideas that led to Starfield and what the first year of development looked like; how they go about designing multiple complex game systems; how their extensive experience in open world RPGs helped them prioritize goals and milestones; building lore for an expansive original IP; and how player creativity has far exceeded their expectations.

Bethesda is miles better, and Bethesda also proved themselves that they can make a great rpg with starfield, so they have that too now.... so if i wanna play fo5, it better be Bethesda

      I've had to manage mechanical equipment for commercial properties including labs with tens of millions of dollars worth of research and product and the responsibility alone can be taxing.

Morrowind was my first intro to Bethesda back in 2002, and I can remember each time they unveiled a new game and how hyped I was. Elder Scrolls is probably the most nostalgic gaming franchise for me, and even though Elder Scrolls VI has taken a while, I do think that it's gonnd end up being Todds Magnum opus. If it's his last Elder Scrolls, he's gonna want it to go out with a bang. Easily my most anticipated game ever.

    22:00 - 24:00 was pretty cool regarding open-ended design. Very analogous of constructing a query: initially you'll have a target in mind but when you sit down to construct, the first pass you use a very large net, or filter, and continue to contract until you've hit your target. Doing so in the inverse, as mentioned, is usually more grief than success.

    Welp.... this was a great interview with a ton of information. Interesting to see, how far back the thought process for this game dates back and how the plans for its future are. Also what the BGS team thinks about the situation now. But this is where i get the feeling, that i need to formulate a quick reminder: " Todd, you promised over 1000 planets and what we got are 4 landing zones far away from each other as big as a pixel, instead of a planet. You said they were free to explore, but i can not go from shore to shore of an island which is 100km big. I have to jump away elsewhere, which destroys every type of longer exploration session, where i could understand the vastness of space and celestial bodies. One guy in your team ( the one with the long dark hair and a belly ) said that space is a place where you are supposed to be able to do everything. So how about actually flying through space and around planets and from planets to moons?" Have those things somehow been forgotten, although you guys clearly left the impression for them to be part of the game? Because they are important to players out there. And they are leaving.

    What an awesome conversation. Ted, if you could have a conversation with a developer like EA Tiburon (Madden Football), I would truly appreciate it. It could be incredibly unique. You can dig in to the processes and pressures of what its like developing a sports game every year for a huge publisher. You could by way of the interview dispel some of the common misconceptions of an "assembly line or cookie cutter" type game by not only humanizing the developers, but also pulling back the curtain on both the rewards and challenges that come with making a yearly title. Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I would find this really fascinating. Thank you so much Ted!

    Im really disappointed that Starfield didn't ship with a hardcore survival mode. Though I do understand that not everyone would enjoy that, I feel that the systems in game, such as the perks related to environmental hazards and recovering from afflictions more meaningful.

      Thats how the game was orignally supposed to function. But they cut it all out. Before during development, most of the settled systems were bunched together. And then you had to traverse mostly empty systems and you had to rely on outposts for medicine and mine your own fuel.
      But they thought it slowed down gameplay too much.
      Hopefully DLC and creationclub change this

      @EggEnjoyer Před 8 měsíci +3

      @@crumblybutgood3545 Funny cause when you learn about the game's development, environmental affects were gonna be much more important. The game was gonna be much slower pace. We already know about the fuel system that they cut. But the whole star system was organized differently. The UAC and Free star systems were bunched together towards the left. And then toward the right side of the star map, there'd be less civilization and things more spaced out. And so it'd hard to get out there and take more time as youd run of fuel and be forced to mine it from planets. And there'd be no where to buy fuel from. And no doctors to treat your ailments. Like now if you get sick or radiation poisoning, you can just hop to a doctor as soon as you get off world. But during development, you were just more isolated and depended on bringing medical supplies out into the expanse.
      As cool as that all sounds, i can see why they dropped it. It'd really slow down literally everything you do in the game. Like in some ways it'd make sense. Imagine The Key being on the far end of the map and then the UC authorities are hiding out near them. And they're cut off from the rest of the UC and making them vulnerable to Crimson fleet attack. That'd makes a lot of sense. But also it'd make completing quests that take part on opposite sides of the system extremely slow. It'd turn a 100 hour play-through into a 200 hour play through.

It was a brilliant, iterative design to the main quest that provides innovative continuity while enabling change too. I can imagine DLC/updates adding further enrichment to that too.
    Crafting, base building, ship building, the enormous skill tree development is all barely started in some senses. Starfield is something of a flawed masterpiece, but any game that can consume this many hours of play is a great one in my view.
