It pains me that Ronaldo lives his life thinking football gave him more than what he gave football. The pace, the power, the stupid haircut, his imperfect teeth, his short but glistening career, the world cup performances, he's given everything. I watched him play when I was 6 randomly on the telly during the World Cup. Didn't know the sport, my family didn't watch football and I had no clue of football as a sport but I remember this memory so vividly, watching this player dance on the small TV screen my family had with me sitting right in front of it with my eyes glued to him. After the match ended I remember for a few days begging my dad to put on more football, conjuring the words and explanations out of thin air because I didn't have the vocabulary, I'd run about pretending to dribble like r9 with an invisible football just so my dad knew I was asking him to put on some football. And we he turned on the TV and Brazil wasn't playing and r9 wasn't playing, he couldn't work out why I was upset. Didn't know the scores, didn't know the players, I just loved the guy with the stupid haircut. I was only 6 at the time but those early memories of football have been with me my whole life and watching this documentary was almost like therapy, time travelling back to that moment to relive it. R9 is in the history books forever.

That was the moment I became a fan of ronaldo. I watched every game of him throughout his career. Every team he played in was my favorite team.

Ronaldo before his injuries played a lot closer to the style of Messi--someone who made things happened outside of the box--much more than he did compared to a typical nine.

There’s no one who was more dangerous and unstoppable on the ball than El Fenomeno. With a combination of speed, agility, dribbling, tricks and technique, he had so many ways to humiliate defenders. Stepovers, nutmegs, roulettes, body feints and fakes going in both directions, plus that crazy burst of acceleration to suddenly get away. He made everything look so effortless. He toyed with some of the greatest defenders ever in Maldini,Nesta and Cannavaro on their hardest tackles. They simply had no hope to prevent him. He broke the World Transfer Fee record three times. He won 3 World Player Awards before he turned 23. It was like you take a little bit of each legend and combine it to make R9. He had the speed of Henry, and the dribbling of Maradona and Messi. He possessed the flair Ronaldinho specialized and had the power of Cristiano. Ability wise, there’s only one Ronaldo, the greatest miracle on football’s biggest stage. Before his knee injury, he was the best player the world ever saw, and to this day, no one has surpassed that.

He's career may not live up to his talent but don't get me wrong, he still had one of the most extraordinary story. Its like if your going to make a movie about a football player, Ronaldo's story is the one to look up to. A promising talent at a young age, go to Europe and became the best player in the World, winning trophies and invidual honors. Then came the 98 World Cup, the perfect stage to become a legend. He didn't disappoint as he clearly performed to the highest level, helping his country to reach the Final. Then from that moment, he's career turned up side down. Poisoned, didn't performed well and eventually lose the final. Then two grueling injuries that made him sideline for almost two years. Then came back in WC 2002, Scoring a staggering 8 goals to exorcise his demons of 98'.... There's only one Ronaldo!

Let's get one thing straight: his club career didn't match up to his talent. His first four years in club football were as good as anyone. International wise, Pele is the only player who might have had a better international career. In tournaments where he actually played, his teams made it to the final five out of six times.

Ronaldo had this mystical hold over football. He won less at club level than Messi or the next Ronaldo, but his "aura" was unique. It may have had to do with the specific time period, the embryonic state of the Internet and the absence of social media, plus the ubiquitous and clever sponsorship (who can forget the Pirelli advertisment with Ronaldo-Jesus over Rio) but it was all very true. If anything, his injuries only strengthened his legend. His solitary season at Barcelona (96-97, won Cup Winners' Cup and Copa del Rey), his first season at Inter (97-98, won UEFA Cup) and first season at Real Madrid (02-03, won the league) were his best at club level. And the 2002 World Cup was beyond epic, a personal redemption so complete that not even Ronaldo himself could have dreamed (and it all felt so right).

I know for sure that you doesnot know anything about football...RONALDO R9 IS GOAT...there are several reasons I could explain to you..but idiot like you will not able to understand...that is ok for me..because I know You are messi and cr7 genrational fan...where only these two monster have no competition apart from each other...but remember the time period of RONALDO R9 When player like zidane, del piero, totti, thierry henry, pires, nedved, trezguet, rivaldo, ronaldinho, beckham, gerrad, lampard, ballack, klose, maldin, nesta, stam, kaka, robeto carlos,f.cannavaro, ferdinand, petit, overmars, viera, van nistelrooy, anelka, owen, alan shearer,berkamp,giggs,scholes,crespo,etc..and many legends more..even defending level is so much high at that period of time...and todays defender is laughable..apart from two to three real defender.. I cant remember any great defender in todays world...so its not about goal scoring my friend..because if we judge on scoring level only..so you thing cavani is better than zidane or maradona? Its about overall perfomance... I am not saying scoring is not important...but it is only one part of the game...so my friend do your research...in my eyes both messi and cr7 even they will score around 1000 goals but they are not as great as zidane or maradona or any other great legends...GROW UP...

I actually met him personally when I was a Kid, he was playing for my home town team, Cruzeiro, and was fixing his car at a workshop near my school. I remember dozens of kids running to meet him, he was 16 or something, and a very humble guy. Back them I wasn't that much into football, even though I supported Cruzeiro, but after that I start to follow his career. Sadly he didn't stay long in Belo Horizonte. Ronaldo always received so much coverage from Brazilian media outlets, so every kid my age was able to follow his career with easy, and could feel a little bit of desperation with all the injuries. In 2002 I was 17 y/o, and the whole WC was a special moment for me. The WC Finals happened to be the same day I made out with my first love, for the first time. Nowadays Ronaldo became a sort of a shade figure, involved in politics and questionable business, I usually disagree with his political points of views, but I do everything in my power to detach the Man he is today from the Player he used to be. As a player he was, and still is, my hero!

The greatest ever striker of all times, if not the best player.
In 1998, i was 10 years old, I remember crying in my bedroom and praying to God that Brazil losing to France was a nightmare.
Was so heartbroken not seeing play for few years and then in 2002, bingo!!! History. Even though he came back and won, he didn’t have the same pace, power and explosiveness. He was more a clinical scorer.
And then he signed for my dream club, Madrid! Oh my God, the best ever!

Everybody knows the sort of pressure Brazil plays with every time they go on the pitch, so if the Brazil coach takes the best player in the world out of the WC Final the day before, VOLUNTARILY of his own accord you know some serious shit must've happened.
A lot of people reckon Nike forced his hand and made him play in that final, and look, even as he talks about it now he has a Nike shirt on whilst explaining that he had a frickin convulsive fit, couldn't find an explanation, wanted to sleep, but instead went to a hospital to get documents forcing the coach to let him play...
