  • It started with a murmur. Marco Materazzi uttered something to Zinedine Zidane and the Frenchman snapped - violently planting his head into the Italian's chest. The referee flashed his red card and Italy won the 2006 World Cup. It's the headbutt no football fan will ever forget. Twelve years on, FFT speaks to those in the stands and in the dugout to find out the truth behind one of the World Cup's most shocking moments.

I'm the biggest Zidane fan out there, but it was a big let down and blemish (I wouldn't call it a disgrace either, but I don't blame people who do). You really think that in all of his career, he didn't hear all sorts of things about his family, sister, wife, etc? He's heard it all long before he ever got to that final, and Materazzi still got to him (because he insulted his family at a time when his mother wasn't doing well health-wise). There's no way a player like Materazzi should have been able to get to a player of Zidane's stature and get him out of a final of a world cup by provoking him, but Zidane has always had an issue with certain provocations. He's at least redeemed his image as one of the greatest coaches in Madrid's history.

Some players have been more effective, some even arguably more skilled. But when it comes to first touch, control, and the ability to grow in important matches Zidane was second to none. Sure, the headbutt diminished his career's full potential trophy wise, but never his impact on the beautiful game. Those who were fortunate enough to follow both his club and national career know exactly what I am talking about, oh how lucky we were to see a player like Zidane! A true genius!
Despite all this 06 final nonsense , Zidane will always be a legend. Thanks for all the memories Zizu! Merci!

Materazzi is considered one of the most representative players of FC Inter by their supporters. He won the WC 2006 with Italy (scoring in the final match), multiple Serie A titles in the next years and the CL 2009-10. As much as I don't like Materazzi (and Inter), he is not an unknown and I don't think there is any connection between this episode and the manager career of Zidane (how could it be? lol). I don't remember people like Baresi, Maldini, Del Piero, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Gerrard, Messi, Raul throwing headbutt to their opponents for an insult. So Zizou will always be one of the greatest, but he ended his last match the most humiliating ad shameful way possible.

I really can't understand all this hatred for materazzi, zidane said that if he wanted he could have his shirt after the game and he replied I'd prefer your sister. Ok we can spend hours talking about how much this is a bad taste answer, etc. but let's not forget that we are at A WORLD FINAL and that it is obvious and right that there is hatred and competition between the players and that Materazzi's response is not like that " absurd "indeed it is quite understandable and to tell the truth (at least in my opinion) it was zidane who was absolutely wrong by responding to an offense with violence (which as we later saw did not lead to anything good). however, during an interview with Materazzi 6/8 months ago they talked a little about what happened and asked him if he had met Zidane again after the incident, he said that he had seen him maybe 1/2 times but without having us never really talked about it and then added that anyway if he saw him now he would just compliment him on the fantastic player he was and the fantastic coach he is right now

Zidane's reaction was animal, but in fact, his headbutt was the most human thing the world have watched on a football pitch. Forget their players career, just look at what kind of man have become Zidane and Materazzi : Zidane has built a great family, created dozens of charities, became Real Madrid manager and won 3 Champions League.... Materazzi only achievement was to monetize his provocation through goodies, books and silly tv ads. 2 men, 2 different ethics
