  • Oh man, we made it! 100 episodes of the Vault Sessions! I can’t heap enough praise on our team, the players, the guys at the Songbirds Guitar Museum, and our fans. Thanks so much for growing with us and helping us hone our videos through kind comments and feedback (we grew from the mean ones too, ha!) Anyway, we hope you enjoy this highlight video from some of our favorite players!
    This episode is centered around an amazing guitar-the 1958 Gibson Korina Flying V with a bizarre lefty guard. This guitar is one of approximately 89 Korina V’s to exist. The Korina wood allowed the guitar to remain incredibly light, but still retain all the acoustic properties of mahogany. In this episode, this guitar is played by some of the best in the business: ‪@JDSimoMusic‬, Marcus King, “Kingfish” Ingram, ‪@jackpearsonguitar‬, and ‪@oznoy‬ !
    Season 3 is packed with great players so click the subscribe button for updates.
    Coming soon: Jimmy Herring, Ben McLeod, Samantha Fish, Stuart Mathis, Andy Wood (part 2), and dozens more. These sessions help keep the music alive by helping the Songbirds Foundation raise money to buy guitars for kids…check out our website to find out more- songbirdsfoundation.org. Thanks to our sponsors- The Riverview Foundation, Schillhahn-Huskey Foundation, GHS Strings, and Todd Sharp Amplifiers. Special thanks to John Dooley for the great video work.

    Jackie Pearson is the man!

      He is definitely my favorite here, the way he uses dynamics and messes with the guitars controls is just fantastic. JD was the least interesting for me personally

      I mean Jack played with the Allman Brothers, you have to be good to do that! He is the man! So humble too.

      Would love to hear Kirk Fletcher play the V. JD came very close to Kirk’s mellow laid back style. But Mr. Pearson was the most versatile IMHO.

    They all sound great on the Flying V but Jack has a nuance that no other player has, his sense of touch is sublime.

    The secret Jack's style is his ability to remain calm. He doesn’t get ahead of himself and doesn’t hit the strings too hard.

    Never seen a V with two PGs. I've seen on an old 335 with two, but not on a '58 V. Very cool and that infamous nasal sound a la Albert King. SRV would've loved this sound for sure.

    There's an Ampeg BT-15 Bass Amp in the background. Had one of those when I was 17 (50 years ago). Best amp I ever owned - period. I believe it was Ampeg's first solid-state amp. The head flipped over into the cabinet for transport. I miss that amp so much.

  • @arthurblackhistoric
    @arthurblackhistoric Před 2 lety +1

    I've got a theory of sorts as to why the Flying V sounds so different to other Gibson guitars. Firstly the Korina wood it's made from. It's not mahogany and that's one major difference. Then there's the amount of korina wood around each pickup. There is practically no wood around the neck pickup, unlike most other Gibson guitars where they have plenty of wood around it, even the SG. But look how close it is to the neck where it's picking up on the neck vibrations. Then we look at the bridge pickup and it's got so much wood around it compared to any other guitar's bridge pickup that it just has to sound significantly different. Whatever the reasons, it sure is a unique guitar, that's for sure.

    Sure sounds like the pickups are out of phase. Albert King gets that sound from his too so maybe out of phase was standard with these. I was too young to know what that means when I got to play a 1958 V

    Can't believe Gibson charges 20 grand for something that sounds nothing like that. Why can't they simply make a pickup that sounds transparent it's not that hard. ReWind did it. Peter Florance di it.
