- Adventure bike? Check. Safety gear? Check. Adv motorcycle skills? Not so much.
Knowing that it's been sometime since I've regularly ridden in the dirt, I decided to hit up Mal from @oldmanspeedadventures about getting some Adventure Bike Training. A former champion motorcross and down hill mountain bike racer, Mal has now turned his hand to coaching new and returning adventure riders and helping them to become as safe as can be.
So, I jumped on my trusty 2023 Kawasaki KLR 650 and headed out bright and early for a day of fun and learning, exploring the beautiful Scenic Rim in South East Queensland.

Wow Ben what a great first crack at a motovlog! How good is the iPhone for filming.
Great video mate well done!
Hi mate, thanks for the feedback.
Yeah, the iPhone does a reasonable job. There’s a few things I need to work on (like in-helmet audio), but I’m pretty happy with it overall so far.
I have to know how you mounted that quad lock on the front bar !!!!!!! I wanted to mount mine up there 😊
Hi mate, I used their mirror mount. Easy peasy.
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 Thank you for the knowledge 👊🏻
@@derrineckelmann3523 You’re welcome mate.
Beautiful scenery. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks mate. Glad you liked it.
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 Massachusetts here
@@GPBAMB In that case, howdy! Are you on a KLR?
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 just purchased a new 2023 Adventure on Thursday. Kawasaki was having a $1,000 dollar off if you bought by 3/31/2023. The dealership was also celebrating 50 years in business. So an additional $250 off the bike, plus $100 towards accessories and $100 towards labor. Couldn’t say no to an offer like that.
Wow! That is a great deal! Here in Australia, Adventure Bikes are so sought after that I couldn’t get a deal at all - had to pay the full sticker price or the next guy in the line would get the bike!
Nice work Ben, bloody good work
Thanks mate. Glad you liked it. Got any suggestions for where I should go next?
Ive got another heading north through MT Mee forest and back way into Kilcoy then another backroad from Kilcoy Murgon way and it takes you over some river creek crossings and back through Linville ( Soemthing to eat ) and then back home again, same sought of Distance Mal took us the other week, If the weekend marry up I can do that with you sometime, Lots of good stuff from our front gates.
@@shaneworld Sounds awesome!
How are you liking the 650?
Mate, I love it.
Now, it’s not the fastest bike, but it’s fast enough. It doesn’t have the best suspension, but it’s good enough. It’s not the most comfortable bike, but it’s comfortable enough.
The KLR is the jack of all trades, master of none, which is exactly what I wanted. There are definitely higher performance bikes out there, but high performance comes at the cost of reliability. More tech = harder to diagnose and fix.
The KLR goes everywhere all the other bikes go, just a little slower and less ‘oooh wow’ from the people watching.
Perhaps I should do a review video?
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 the klr is just always so happy to be along
@@mistergreene2 Exactly! What model do you have?
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 standard '22
@@mistergreene2 The best one then!
Hey mate cool video, do you have a gps file for those tracks? I'm new to GC, looking for places to ride.... appreciate any help
Yeah mate. Send me an email: adventurebikesaustralia@gmail.com
Looking at the KLR, but just wondering how you went with the ABS on the down hill section on the dirt?
Valid question mate. I’ve done quite a few different off-road rides and have never had a problem until recently, when I was trying to take it somewhere I probably shouldn’t. It was SUPER steep and the surface was very marbly. In the end, I had to turn the engine off and clutch it down the hill.
I know several people who have either pulled the ABS fuse or wired in a bypass switch. I can’t recommend this though as I don’t know how it affects registration laws or insurance coverage.
Also, the KLX230S has just been released with an ABS switch, so I imagine we’ll get a kit for the KLR soon.
Thanks for the reply and feedback, currently on a road bike. Definitely like the idea of the adventure riding course!
@@danielward4654 It is money very well spent. If you’re GC / Northern NSW, hit up Old Man Speed Adventures. He occasionally does training days in the Sunshine Coast too. If you’re in Brissie or a bit further north, look up On The Back Wheel - a little bird told me he’s thinking of getting into offering training too.
Nice spots Ben. Have you got a gpx for the route?
I do mate. Shoot me an email: adventurebikesaustralia@gmail.com
Dude! You are riding on the wrong side of the road! Lol
Hahaha yeah, we tend to do that here in Australia!
get the phone off the phone mount, KLR kills phone cameras that have stabilization. I can verify this. my 2022 klr killed my pixel 6a camera after just 2 weeks of vibrating.
Yes, I have heard that. Under that mount is their vibration dampener as well. So far so good.
I killed mine with the anti-vibration mount installed. The only one that really holds up to serious vibration is the Hondo Garage.
Sorry to hear that mate. I'm up to 2,000ks with my iPhone 11 and so far it's held up really well. I'll have a look at the Hondo Garage too though.
@@adventurebikesaustralia7627 Mine took a while before the vibration killed it even with the dampener. Every bike is kind a unique ecosystem in terms of vibration, frequency, etc (mine was on a 790 at the time). The Hondo works even on thumpers, the downside it that you are going to get a bit more movement.
What happened?
Do you mean the near spill at the start? Was lugging it up the hill, hit a rut the wrong way which through the bike sideways and threatened to stall the bike, so I opened the throttle to stop it from stalling, and the bike slid out the other way.
