Mike : "Canadien, spelled wrong"
All of quebec: *sharpens hockey sticks with malicious intent*
TBF, Andy did offer the correct explanation, that it is the french-canadian spelling.
I heard the sharpening from Ontario!
@@CorwinAlexander Oh but makes all those Habs happy, don't ruin their fun.
I can hear it from the Far side of Ontario. Oh, no, wait... that's my dad. He and I are... where did this sharpenned hockey stick come from?
@@amwoodco3049 it's the first blizzards. Hockey calls for sharpening, and Canada will answer !
MIke finally gets a chance and jane learns the most important hockey lesson, Don't put hopes in the leafs
Also if your a leaf fan, always have a backup team because you'll inevitably need them.
@@isabellanoble1280 much needed, although I'm a oilers fan so i cant talk too much smack
New York Rangers here, we also know that pain too well.
[EDIT: Just because I'm always wrong. Hours after writing this NYR beat the Leafs 3-1.]
Good thing they weren't simulating a game 7 of the playoffs or we wouldn't have had to even bother to watch.
I'm a Bruins fan and I approve this message.
As a Canadian (even as one who really knows next to nothing about sports) I feel conflicted yet amused at watching the whole team trying to figure out hockey :P
Fellow Canuck, can confirm. It was like teaching your Grandma how to use a computer....But at least this made me laugh lots!
Does the Maple Leafs/Maple Leaves make any more sense to you?
i'm Finnish and i feel the same way lol
@@TheShinyShow If you can't beat em, scare em with grammar? Either that or they just wanted two words to have the same amount of letters to fit better on merchandise :P
That’s usually the answer to dumb things we do. It’s about the Muneey.
9:00 "You can't get in trouble for badly aimed shots, that's just being bad at hockey, it's not against the rules!"
🤣 Exactly Andy!
I’m pretty sure I’ve heard this exact argument before home watching hockey at a bar 😂
Rules: Must be good at hockey
Glad to see Mike finally taking on a challenge. XD Also, that was a missed opportunity to have this video titled as "What the Puck is Hockey Challenge".
As a lifelong Leafs fan I can confidently say that you've properly captured the energy of a Leafs game. GO LEAFS GO!
As a Torontarian i think Jane did a great job cosplaying as the Leafs. A great game and we lost. All is right in the world🍁
I like to imagine that Ellen is the one in the bear mascot suit, watching the game and trying to break in.
*Bearilwen demands access to the playing surface!!
Would be both cute and funny but isn’t she too short to fit in the costume comfortably? 😅
Finally Mike gets a turn!
It’s about time right
And it is with an American sports game.
Brings back memories of Mike's legendary Madden NFL challenge from a few Christmases ago. 😂
I don't know if they're filmed in order. It sounded like Santa said "Michael again".
@@AlexPrime85 I heard the "again" as well, so I'm assuming they don't upload them in the same order they film them. Not to mention they likely do as many challenges in a day as they can so they're not there for ages with challenges.
@@SolaScientia They mentioned in the last live stream that they've fillmed all the videos to the end of the year, so hopefully they got them all done before Ellen got Covid :(
Pretty sure you guys didn't know the history between those two teams but as a Maple Leafs fan I saw this matchup and knew ALL too well how this was going to end... You gave a valiant effort though Jane!
Merging Ellen with the puck apparently brings out the puns in everyone. This was so entertaining I felt Bruin trying to Leaf.
Oh my god guys, as a Canadian hockey lover, this stream had me in absolute STITCHES! Calling all the teams rubbish at the start, Jane constantly saying "Deke it!", and all the rule flubbing. Oh man, instant classic!
i couldn't drink my afternoon coffee watching this - i'd drown on dry land.
"oh hey look, you can go behind the net!"
"why are there two refs?"
"what's the tackle button your using?"
so many good lines.
As a representative of the other half of Canadians (those who have no interest in hockey), I can confirm that this is still absolutely hilarious and entertaining to watch and possibly the best Oxmas Challenge this year yet! 😂
@@frootloop4149 "why are there two refs?" Wait until they find out about the linesmen
“Canadians, spelled wrong” killed me 😂
@@frootloop4149 18:59 "why can't you skate faster you clowns????"
Jane singing circus music was just classic! 😂😂😭😆
😂🤣😂🤣😆😆😆 Wonder if not knowing how to play Hockey was what drove her a bit nuts in best way
As a former player and current coach... this is hands down one of the most entertaining things I have ever seen... face palm while laughing!
Go Bolts!!
I guess we learned three things: Deke it, always; the meaning of "Icing", and that Luke remains the prime purveyor of premium puns
Ellen would like a word with you...
@@eric6867..from her Bargain Pun Emporium 😉
"I'm bruined" was not properly appreciated for the genius it is.
You all have perfectly captured how my non-hockey playing friends react to me talking about hockey. 🤣
Fun fact: The glass around the rink is actually to protect the players from the mascots. Their vision is based on vision, so skating around makes you look pretty tasty, plus obviously they will just go absolutely wild if there's an injury and any blood.
Nobody really knows what the mascots are. Only that they came from the great North.
I love that Jane's go to comeback is "you are."
We all know, if Ellen was the hockey puck, it would totally go "Weeeeeee!" everytime it got shuffled across the ice.^^
What I took away is if the bear's rage meter fills, it smashes through the barrier and presumably starts mauling the players.
Well done Mike!
Wait Mike's the Bruins!? Go go Black and Gold!!
Edit: Andy saying "because everyone needs to buy beer and watch Chevy commercials" might be my quote of the year from these guys. So goddamn true.
Every year I genuinely enjoy watching Oxboxtra butcher my favorite sports. Andy referencing the Sharks power play tradition made me so irrationally happy.
The Oxboxtra team butchering sports they know little to nothing about in an excitable way is fast becoming a holiday tradition 😂
My main takeaway from this is that live sport can be tremendous with four excitable commentators who don't understand what they're watching!
You’ve basically described Colombian football commentators - 3 or 4 loud-and-fast-talking people that have no clue about the sport they are providing commentary for.
*japanese D1 commentators have entered the chat lol
Seeing Jane's skater coming out of the Bruins zone every single play because she didn't realize which player she was had me rolling
The video got even funnier once I realized that Jane's way of playing defense was pressing the stick down all the time, effectively taking her own player out of the play. 😂
she didn't seem to know how to switch what player she was controlling on defence either. so really it's a wonder the score against her wasn't higher.
Jock Douglas over there. That's exactly how I play sports games. The goal is to throw a ball to the other team and watch them run the full length of the field, right?
it is unclear if she ever managed a real shot on goal either
That was pretty funny. I was like why is there always a Maple Leaf coming from deep in the offensive zone causing an offside? Oh right she's moved him there and no one noticed this....🤣
As an American with a passive interest in hockey (even attended a few local games) I'm so entertained by this stream and the comments from our Canadian friends😅
Carlton is named after Carlton Street where the original arena the Leafs played in (Maple Leaf Gardens) was located. Great venue. Especially for old school pro wrestling.
And preconfederation rebellions.
Yay, Mike got a chance to play! Also, that Nylander joke really got me:D
"There can be only one!"
I haven't watched the video yet, but as an avid hockey fan, I am prepared to be annoyed but also amused for the next 20+ minutes.
Update - It went as expected. Semi-spoiler: Jane played most of the game without changing her player on defense, so she effectively played a man-down whenever Mike had the puck, while a player off-screen was just skating downward into the corner. Unbe-leaf-able!
@@nathanielwiens I was wondering why there was a lone Leaf just hanging out in the Bruins' zone so often.
@@nathanielwiens i wanted with my soul to time travel and explain icing to them so badly.
@@nathanielwiens Pretty sure it took her until somewhere in the 3rd to figure out shoot vs. pass. Or maybe her controller battery was low, since a few times she didn't seem able to move her skater.
@Thomas Brantley I was actually impressed that Andy managed to get a semi coherent layman's explanation out of the official rules description! Basically, dont huck it down the ice. Didn't do much for the application, though 😆
As a Canadian who has played and watched hockey her entire life, this was an amazing video. Offside, icing, deke! Just great. 😄
I love how they never even realized when power plays were happening 😂 I really wanted to see them accidentally play with an empty net!
Jock-Jane and Macho-Mike finally get a chance to show of their vast knowledge of sports-ball.
I love how, knowing absolutely nothing about hockey or the NHL, they choose one of the biggest rivalries in the sport!
Well They picked a team from Boston so the chances of that were high
It's probably true they're rivals with everyone at something.
I'm genuinely flabberghasted that, based on previous Christmas challenge iterations, the OX crew know less about hockey than American football (the most inscruitable sport currently on planet Earth) haha. Love y'all and the new format for this year! Keep up the great work!
@@khamjaninja. I've recently kind of gotten into cricket through a few YT channels, and once you get past the byzantine display runs/overs, which in full disclosure prevented me from caring about the game for years, I think the game is fairly straightforward, and more importantly, fun. Also, Producer/Santa Jon's Owzthat video on OXtra was very succinct in explaining the nuances of cricket in a way. Australian football though, fair enough,... god speed on that one haha
This is my favourite challenge of the series so far, mostly because Jane heard the term "deke" and used it in so many situations, and Andy's expertise of hockey was both correct and terribly insightful of the sports fan community 😂
Andy's knowledge of hockey is incredible - the breaks in play _are_ for Chevy commercials.
Luke’s “I feel I’m learning less about hockey” is so apt. This MUST be a challenge next year, and every year.
I cannot believe it! It's a Mikesmas Miracle! ™️
Jane’s face at Santa saying “wet on wet” was priceless. I can see the fatigue of filming all these in one week/day every video and it really helps me empathize with all of the cast
Had a once in a lifetime experience twice with the Leafs. The tickets for the lower bowl are astronomical, (Toronto are the best funded and least winningest team around.) and my friend’s wife at the time came up with a pair of tickets from her boss.
I took my dad, both in our suits from the days work. Enhanced by a friend who worked at the arena showing us around and to our seats. Beautiful memory, from a ticket to a game the original owner didn’t want to see.
A couple weeks later they played another gutter team and we went again. Wherever you are, love ya mate. Thanks again.
"Hurt him so bad he can't play hockey!"
"Do that to the whole team..."
Someone introduce them to Mutant League Hockey!
it's liek real hockey, but with a better medical plan. :D
Thanks for sending me down a Leafs vs. Leaves rabbit hole. Turns out it's a proper noun thing.
Jane's absolute concern over Santa saying "wet on wet"
I had a Smash Bros. style “Mike Joins the Tournament” announcement in my head when I saw the thumbnail.
As an English lad that plays hockey over here, it's nice to see it getting some love, no better sound than the ice under blade, and no better feeling than driving someone's head through the boards.
Oh man, yeah. My Canadian heart is happy watching this. Sitting on my balcony in winter smoking a joint watching Oxboxtra figure out hockey is my new winter tradition.
Not enough props given to Santa for that sleight of hand card trick. I see you, Santa, I see you
If they had caught Jane didn't realize she could switch players on defense, then it would've made for some truly amazing replays as a lonely player in the Bruins zone just plays a game of hockey vs a ghost.
As a puck (yes, that's because I'm tiny), that was both harrowing and hilarious to watch.
As an American hockey player, I thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you!
Is Ellen still staring at the "must be this tall" sign on the teleporter?
As a hockeyfan, this was equal parts hilarious and painful to watch 🤣 also, petition to rename the penalty box to the "sin bin"!!
🤣 Second it!! don’t think it’ll be allowed though. Since it’s already in rugby if a tackle isn’t quite bad enough for the offender to be sent off
As someone who isn’t into sports and knows very little about hockey, the whole “how do I fight” would be me playing this.
I was watching this during my lunch and nearly spewed chili everywhere when Luke said that they should make the puck bigger or the people smaller lol also the deke talk was quite funny. This probably has to be my favorite video so far you all were hilarious (the golf video isn't far behind)
This is the best video. People who know little to nothing about hockey, commentating a classic Eastern Conference match-up *chef's kiss*
"Because I love the San Jose Sharks"
Thank you, Andy! Thank you! As a fellow Sharks fan in the Bay Area, thank you!
Yesss Go Sharks!!!
"How do I kill?" This is honestly the best thing I have seen
I feel like the last challenge should be a 5 player Super Smash Bros Ultimate free for all.
Getting a K/O gets you a point, getting K/Oed loses you a point.
Lets see the Champion of Champions!
You could save a bunch of time by just handing the trophy to Andy.
Would allow Jane to still be in the running! 😄👍
This but gang beasts
@@TheYorkRose I love it.
Settle it in Smash!
I enjoyed Jane’s incredulity at learning hockey has three periods.
love how they pick a huge rivalry
They do that and it's the funniest thing.
@@silverwyhrecat5 or mike going what does that even mean?
Jane's power play goal in the third made me cheer.
Jane saying "My Leafs" is all I needed for Christmas!
Mike talked with the mom, now it's his turn on the xbox
hey guys! i love all of your vids, a lot, but... this nonsense is the funniest thing I think I've ever watched from you and it's been wonderful. I don't know much about hokey but you guys trying to piece-it-together has been so delightful. I've watched it 4 times now, (2 more then the other Christmas challenge games) and it never gets any less hilarious. THANK YOU so much for the entertainment value.
This video going to be a lowkey gem that many will miss because "hockey" .
This was a thrilling game, close score, big rivalry, and lots of deke jokes. And that last part was the only thing on purpose. Gotta love oxboxtra.
I love that despite Ellen not being there they constantly throw in random puns
I need to join the chorus of hockey fans expressing their sheer glee (Go Kraken!!).
This was brilliant! Luke's Nylander joke was a definite highlight.
This was amazing, and I think we need more OxBoxtra vs Hockey. 😂
As a pretty well life long hockey fan/player, this was incredibly painful to watch, but still awesome.
Hoping this is a staple for years to come.
I love these sport challenges, I go in knowing nothing about the sport and come out knowing even less xD
“Nylander - there can be only one” really tickled me
I don't get it lol
@@paul-juniorblack6151 It's a reference to Highlander.
As a huge hockey fan...this was amazing! From the accidental original 6 matchup, to that beautiful goal. Love this
Hockey can be a delightful game when there's this much action happening on the ice and not just because a pair of gamers are literally battling it out for a holiday-themed challenge. The Bruins are a solid team in not only being an institution within the sport but having maybe their pick of premium players on their roster. I"m by no means a hardcore fan but I know enough that skating around on ice that definitely isn't about to give way for the better half of three hours with hard sticks that can and have cut up player's faces is a trial. Most all the players have been playing since youth, tend to be built, quite tall and from parts of the world where getting signed to a team is like leaving your tiny town for a pro-football career.
You guys are right that at time, the fights are often the best part of the entire game when they happen but there are times where the players realize it's really just a game and being sore about their last encounter doesn't serve anyone. Chara, a Bruin who's retired now, was a six-foot something sweetheart who didn't kindly to bad etiquette and knocked guys over for it. He even escorted the gurney of a fallen player off the ice after body-checking him into the glass because at the end of the day, it's all a game and harboring grudges serves no one.
Also, this game is one of the most sensible version of hockey period. You guys could be struggling to play scuba hockey instead of a mix of American, Canadian and European ice skaters ready and often willing to help loosen your teeth if you piss them off badly enough.
The chaos of this episode! 😂
It’s more chaotic than Madden somehow 🤣😂🤣😂
I'm loving this!!! As a hockey player from the US, and a lover of this channel, it's hilariously painful. Probably like watching an American play FIFA for the first time.
So happy to see a hockey challenge
Same due to how clueless they are 😂🤣😂🤣
As a Canadian, watching you play NHL gave me great pleasure 😂
I'm from Pittsburgh. I'm pretty sure they're called the Penguins just for the alliteration. It gets cold but far from Antarctic. Anyway it was nice to hear Luke get excited about them.
Probably, but it's nice that it's also an animal that belongs on the ice. I feel like they put more effort into naming the Penguins and Steelers than they did the Pirates. (I'm also from Pgh area.)
Any of their sports challenges are super fun to watch. Fifa, Madden, NFL.. We need more!
As a NHL fan… I found this both hilarious and frustrating at the same time!!
This video should be called 'how many times can we say something completely wrong about hockey and how annoyed can we make hockey fans in the process' 😂
Reading the title makes me think of that one Madden challenge Mike had one year where they had no idea what was going on and it was hilarious...hope it's like that again
Edit: ah yes, Mike's classic "what does it mean?!?!" Followed by some ludicrous answer by Andy in a confident voice
This was hilarious and honestly so fun to watch. The Tournament of Champions does not disappoint.
Jane: "OK Leafs time for a comeback"
Me: laughs as hockey fan
As a Hockey Fan, this was pure chaos. I loved it!
As a hockey player this was hilarious but I can’t believe how well they knew the game! Seems like they got everything right, even learned a thing or two myself from watching!
That was absolutely marvelous. As a Blackhawks fan, loved watching and hearing you guys try to discern hockey. Would love to see the crew try to play and discern baseball like MLB The Show someday too.
edit: and now I just realized they did!
A true winter classic 10/10
Hope it becomes a yearly tradition that neither ever practice or learn the rules for
Thank you Luke. I was so hoping they would pick the Pens, but alas. 😂 I do love Mike and Jane’s bloodlust for a good donnybrook (all my hockey knowledge comes from a few Pens games I went to and Letterkenny)
21:24 LMAO 🤣 "There can be only one" 🤣
19:50 I love that even people who know nothing about hockey realize that Goalies Are Too Big Now.
This is my new favorite game to watch the team play, that was such fun.
As a massive hockey fan, this both massively frustrated and massively delighted me. I hope this becomes an annual challenge.
Also, when they cycled through the teams and said "We're just going to anger all the hockey fans...Blue Jackets? Rubbish."...as a Blue Jackets fan...yeah, that's pretty accurate.
Soccer: pass an item back and forth until you get it past the opposing goalie, usually between 0-3 points.
Hockey: literally the same thing but on ice and violence.
OX: HOW DOES THIS SPORT WORK?
Great analogy though football not soccer
Luke's frustration is palpable. I love it. Same. LoL
Lmao Jane sounds like every hockey mom ever
My totality of hockey love can be summarized as "I'm Canadian" which means, I know most of the rules and the teams, but only really care during the Stanley cup finals, and the Winter Olympics. And listening to everyone trying to explain, or dis-explain, hockey is amazing.
Also I heard you Luke "Toronto: Home of Pup" darn straight!
Another OX sports game classic alongside the incredible let's play of Madden NFL. Petition for more sports games in 2023!
