- Building and restoring horse drawn vehicles of the 18th or 19th century has a unique challenge of dealing with 21st century technology. Google has risen to the top as an authoritative resource for information at the tips of our fingers. What began as a name of a company has become a verb in our culture - "Google it." However, Google is merely a data base information center, subject to what information it has been given. While much of this information is accurate, some of it may be inaccurate, or incomplete. This dialog touches where Google information is incomplete when it comes down to the carriage trade of the 19th century, simply because insufficient information has not been provided, yet. Here is my little attempt to provide more information to the Google database.

I waited a couple of days before sending this response. Before I do though, please let me preface with this comment. Ever since finding your work on CZcams I have looked forward to watching each and everyone of your videos, and more important, the dialog you have with us in explaining what and why you are doing something. You are a true craftsman with a master of many skills!
I was taken aback when you made the comments that you are only "a nobody in a h^ck town". You have demonstrated to me, and I'm sure many of your other viewers, that you have a commanding presence in your field. Your contributions and dedication to what you do is evident through your work. I have always been totally amazed at your thought process and how you use your mind and tools.
With this last video I'm even more impressed with your knowledge of the Holy Bible and how you are able to research and tie your thoughts together precisely and concisely.
I'm glad you made your point and set the record straight for the unknowing. You truly are a somebody in a great little town!

I just get more and more impressed. Not only a master craftsman, but a Hebrew scholar also. Don't be self deprecating - you're not a nobody from a hick town, you make the world that more interesting with your channel.
Your observations are not out of place. I've been making furniture for a while, (after a lifetime of doing other things) and helping friends restore old homes. Us "old-timers", need to be precise and correct to help carry on the crafts to the generations who come after us, from the ones who came before us. I have a glossary of architectural terms from 1906, and another later book with terms typical in home construction. I try to use these terms often, such as when teaching on how to trim out a window, that each board has a name (Sill, Apron, Jamb, etc.). I don't think it's a waste of time, since someday, somebody may want to learn more about the subject, and be lost in trying to find the information because they didn't know exactly what to call it.
Many years ago (I am 80 so many years is appropriate) My dad, of whom you remind me told me " Just because someone says something does not make it so" 'Believe half of what you see and Very little of what read or hear ' Thank you for the reminder and exceptionally well presented lesson
Holy Moses! I so enjoyed this 'rant'. My father, a minister and missionary, was fluent in Greek and Hebrew, and was a voracious researcher in his biblical studies. It just so happens he was also an old ranch boy from West Texas, so in a nutshell there's all of my upbringing. This video reminded me so much of many interesting conversations we had, and sermons he preached. Thank you!

HI MR Engels Now I know why I enjoy your videos so much. You are not only a very accomplished craftsman but a Christian. I was familiar with horse drawn equipment as a boy on a farm in Pennsylvania. I have ridden on a bobsled and a one horse slay. Also other horse drawn farm equipment like plows cultivators and hay equipment. I am 87 years young and sort of miss the simple life of long ago. You are also a much more accomplished Bible student than I am. However the love of GOD is the bottom line. Blessings.

Brother in Christ. I truly appreciate your study in this. I have been seeking the Living God for over 50 years and even though I do not have a command of Hebrew, I do speak German. What I have found in translating is that the translators will reveal their prejudice or their proclivities. When Luther translated the Scripture into German, there are idioms that come out differently if one tries to translate into English from the German. I have always been fascinated by this. Living in Africa we met some translators who were working from the English who discovered for example there was no word in the language they were attempting to write out for sin, and they ended up having to write a paragraph to make that one word understood. I have found the same in the translations my wife and I use daily, that some might call error, while others rightly understand that the original translator may not have had a word in their mother tongue for what was being said. I love this and I appreciate you crafting this. What is so wonderful of all of this is, that when the redeemed are gathered unto HIM, all of this will be understood from the eternal. One thing for sure is this, the things of the Lord will be revealed and the remnant will be giving understanding that we cannot even come close to in our lives. Shalom from Kentucky.

I have long been interested in language. I grew up reading late 1800 novels prose and poetry, and have found that our language has changed. Dictionaries no longer even have some of the "old" words. When they update dictionaries they decide whether or not to continue a word they consider unused. Your points are valid, real in every respect, and non the less, as you said, not a big deal. I on the other hand miss some of the beautiful and "correct" words and terms of my youth. Big thumbs up sir! Regards, Solomon
Love your videos. Your presentation was great, and as a genealogist, I can tell you that when doing research, never take things at face value or it can lead you astray. My grandfather had a Bob Sled so when I saw your videos listed as such, I knew exactly what you were talking about. My grandmother also explained to me why a bobbin was called such in her sewing machine, because of the up and down motion of the needle when she was sewing. Fascinating stuff and well worth the effort to explain. Really enjoy your videos, and just so you know, my favorite people are nobodies who live in hick towns. I am 81 years old and have been through a lot of hick towns and met a bunch of nobodies, and they always are the smartest and best people I have ever met, and though I have never met you, your easy going manner makes me feel like we have been friends for ages. Keep up the good works. We need a whole lot more folks like you.

In the 1980's when I was studying Art History at the University of Guelph in Ontario, I had a professor by the name of Helen Dow. When she taught me she was in her late 60's. When she was a young woman, her job was re-translating some of the original Latin sources that were used for the King James Bible. She was shocked at the mistakes that had been made. She was one of the first authorities that encouraged me to "question authority". Thanks for making this video. You use the narrow focus to make a broader statement. Congratulations on your effort to learn Hebrew as well. You show true scholarship in many aspects of your life.
Hello, your comment caught my attention for it raised questions within me. I am not here to debate doctrine or be an advocate of any English translation of the Bible for I am not even an Englishman, nor do I live in any of the English speaking countries of this world, and I don't read an English Bible.
I'm no Latin scholar either. I'm but a simple man who's able to distinguish simple matters such as night from day, and salt from pepper.
It is known that the Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew, and the New Testament was originally written in Greek, both being languages which precede Latin and their origins have no relation to Latin, which is in fact a dead language.
It is also known that the panel of translators of the KJV (Bible version which you specifically mentioned), translated the O.T. from the original Hebrew, and the N.T. from the original Greek.
My first question being:
Which "Latin sources" of the Bible was Mrs Helen Dow re-translating, when in fact the Old and New Testament derive from Hebrew and Greek sources respectively and contain no Latin?
It is understood, if not an established fact, that when speaking of the Bible we are referring specifically to the O.T. and the N.T. and that alone.
No other theological or religious manuscripts are included in the Holy Bible and that is the standard, the rule, the canon for all churches regardless of the translation they use.
That's not to say that other theological or religious manuscripts don't exist and that some churches don't include them in their broader theology.
Fact of the matter being, the KJV, not only does it not include in it's Bible translation any other manuscript, but it also does not recognise any other manuscript, besides the O.T and N.T., as being the inspired and preserved Word of God.
Yes, the KJV translators did translate the apocrypha from Latin manuscripts, but the point of the matter is that the KJV, as all translations, does not include them in their Bible and does not even recognise the apocrypha (as all churches) as being part of the divine Word of God i.e the Bible.
This brings forth my other questions:
- Since there is no "original Latin source" of what is the Bible, isn't it therefore an established fact that Mrs Helen Dow was not re-translating any part of the Bible, but was most likely re-translating the apocrypha which are not the Bible?
- Given that Mrs Helen Dow's expertise was Latin, isn't it established that she had no authority over the Hebrew and Greek languages, the sources from which the KJV Bible translation derives?
- As I have demonstrated she was most certainly not involved in translating the Bible but rather some irrelevant Latin theological manuscript, which begs the question, what then authority had Mrs Helen Dow to contradict the KJV translation of the Bible with which she was clearly never involved?
- End lastly, are you not going back on your own words by not questioning her authority on the specific matter for which she had no authority?
@@SsiolisP Sorry, but I can no longer ask her for details. Looking at wikipedia, I see that you are correct about the Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic and Latin sources. I do remember that the sources that she was using were four or five Irish bibles in Latin. She also mentioned that there were discrepancies between those sources which she thought may be because those monks copying the manuscripts were not necessarily literate.

Yes, it was well understood that Mrs Helen is not with us. That is precisely why I referred to her in past tense.
Although she is most certainly unavailable for questioning, her legacy handed down to us through your memories is.
The KJV was written by a specific panel of English biblical scholars, not monks.
Also, and of great importance, the authorized KJV was written in English.
That said, it is understandable that the Irish Latin Bibles which Mrs Helen worked on, were not the product of the authorized KJV panel of scholars, but rather an independent translation of the Bible into Latin.
Regardless of the level of literacy amongst those monks, how can the KJV Bible, and the authorized panel of scholars be held accountable for discrepancies found in a later, independent Latin translation(s) in which the authorized KJV panel had no part and involvement?
I had always been lead to believe that the KJV translators were quite good, if not excellent translators, even if their personal lives did not live up to the scripture they translated.
@@clockguy2 I'm sorry but how would we know how proficient the translators in 1611 were? How would we know about their personal lives? My original point was to reinforce what Mr. Engels was saying about authoritative sources. I think that his statements were timely for a modern American. Please lets focus on that.

I remember a meeting I was in once and a manager wanted to put over why he thought we should do something his way. He rambled on about how many years he studied, the stream of qualifications he gained, awards he'd won and every other reason why he should be supported.
Another manager told him we were all aware of his achievements, showed respect for his knowledge and expertise but.........

Google is the same. The information is mainly there through contribution or as you say, searches educating google.

I am not religious but know Hebrew and enjoy the analysis of translations like the one you pointed out in this video. What jumped out at me in the verse you presented is actually the last word. It has several meanings. The first and by far most used meaning of the word is "solid". Both the state of a substance (ice being the solid state of water) and something that was built well, strong, solid. Other meanings of the word are to cast or pour. In my opinion to cast or pour something is a building, creating action while the given translation of molten is a destructive action. Those are complete opposites and without context just that single verse gives me the impression that "wheels were molten (down)" instead of "solid wheels" or " cast wheels".

I have never viewed Google as an authoritative site, but merely as a "search engine". You have a bunch of limited educated Millennials, who needed their diapers changed last week, running the day to day operations of Google. Thus, with your age, experience, knowledge & wisdom, I find you more valuable than the kids in Silicon Valley.
You well demonstrated the difference between a surface scan of information on a given subject; and the in depth quality of research. Actual research finds contemporary and historic sources: not the most popular answer that sits at the top of a list on the internet.
There is no algorithm for truth.

I have been reading studying the bible for 40 years and I am aware of many miss translations, like you brought out, things that have been added and things left out. Here is the verse according to the New World Translation; 1 Kings 7:33 And the workmanship of the wheels was like the workmanship of a chariot wheel.+ Their supports and their felloes and their spokes and their hubs, they were all cast. Enjoy and thanks again.
Just my impression: Being a solid cast metal item, maybe the order of how the mould forms are placed when ramming the cope and drag.
WOW Dave !!!!! I waited 3 weeks too long to enjoy this Blessing. As a fellow multi-trade craftsman and Christian, I too encourage people NOT to believe everything they "google" or "hear" to be factual BUT to study the answers out to find truth or more indepth knowledge and do they "line up". I've shared on a few wood sites BUT found facts weren't what most are after BUT a quick fix to their quick fix to their quick fix of a mess they created by refusing the truth /facts (not studying BUT just accepting). I also encourage older books (1920ish and older) for more quality info regarding trades. I AM NOT discrediting newer info or books as some are great but I find alot of basic info is left out and that is the critical part of the trade/craft.
Same with the Bible. I am still learning to get more indepth of who the people, culture, trade/craft, religion the book or verses are speaking to as this also has meaning of why most of it is spoken to and whether it was specific as Bob or sled OR to be taken in whole as bobsled and group all into one.

Thats a good example of why we should question and not just accept things we read on the internet, or in a book. Its also a good example of how each of us has our own speciality, knowledge and experience and together we are the resource, not Google. @EngelsCoachShop Mr. Engels: I'll try to keep it short. I teach my middle school students that Google is NOT the information, but an index (like electronic index cards). It only shows the web sites that match your word search. I show my students a fake web page I created and how it shows up on Google. Just because it shows up on Google, it doesn't make my lies TRUE.
The dictionary (dot com you used) is only good at defining one word at a time. It can't handle two different words at once, but it did define BOB² as you described it.
Now the great news for you. When you search for an exact phrase, use the QUOTE marks. I went to youtube and searched for "BOB SLED" ... You appeared ON TOP of the list with many other BOB SLED videos that weren't bobsleds.

Shae Tallent Nice thing about the kjv is the translation problems are well known. The nkjv fixes many of these like it does with this verse and it is based on the textus receptus and not the alexandrian text like the niv and others. The good thing is all 3 get the essentials correct.
@Shae Tallent Hey Shae. While I, too, heartily dislike the NIV, the KJV was itself not a word for word translation. In fact, if I remember correctly, it was last updated in 1785, or thereabouts. An original KJV would be unreadable for most people today, since the spelling, grammar, and syntax are Elizabethan English. I keep a KJV on my desk, along with a copy of the Geneva Bible, an English Standard Version, a Greek New Testament, and my concordances. As Christians, we are to carefully examine the text. Comparing the different translations can be helpful, especially when you see the differences. Oh, and I highly recommend Stephen Charnock's "The Existence and Attributes of God" which is well worth your time. Take care.
You just blew my mind. You are a craftsman and have a burning desire and passion for truth. You also pronounced the Hebrew very well. To hear you say where you are and your humble statement of who you are or not just blew me away. I cant get away from certain skills and I absolutely enjoy your videos. Just recently I became deeply interested in my Jewish roots and going to synagogue and learning Hebrew. The depth of meaning from each letter and word is so profound. Why are we gathered together to learn from one another and what draws us together? God definately exists. I am beside myself in awe. Its 3:22 am and I had to finish watching your video. And I knew there was some reason that made me want to hear what you had to say.

Dave you are a wealth of information as well a wealth of trades and know-how , a person can learn alot by watching your techniques and listening to your self explanation with the history lesson thrown in , it may not be everyone's way of doing things but I can tell ya as a general handy man, gunsmith , Brick and stone Mason for more than 30+ yrs myself I've learned a thing or two just seeing another person's perspective of the trades you Sir have Mastered , we are never to old to learn and never too young to stop learning . Keep up the excellent videos.

I'll put it politely, It's "bob sled" because Dave said it is! I'm very impressed with your Hebrew Mr Engels. Thanks for taking the time to point these things out. Google and by default CZcams is a privately owned corporation with a corporate agenda. There is no overwhelming desire for their product to be accurate. They stick with what fits the corporate agenda best.

In my area Eastern Ontario we have sleighs cutters and Bob sleds. Often I see bob sleds with chains in an x pattern connecting back skies to front. Four way steering which is very maneuverable in the dense forest.
These bob sleds were mostly used to move logs out of the forest. Good stuff Dave.

Interesting video. As a kid growing up in Saskatchewan and using this equipment they were Bob Sleds with hay racks to feed cattle. At least that was how my grandma wrote it on the pictures of them using this equipment in her photo albums.
As if his regular coach building videos weren't educational enough, now he's teaching us Old Testament Biblical Hebrew as it applies to coach terminology. Consider my mind officially blown. Thank you David. What other talents await us?
