  • Hello ROLEX watch fans this is Watch Fan Henry and this is my third video installment from my Tokyo, Japan ROLEX watch tour, filmed in December 2023. Tokyo truly does offer some unbelievable value for the serious ROLEX watch collector. The city is jam packed with ROLEX watch shops that have unbelievable inventories, and the prices are far better than what you’ll find anywhere in North America, the UK, or Europe. I hope you enjoy this video and if you do find it interesting, I’d love to see your comments and if you’re not already a subscriber to my channel, please do subscribe .. I’d really appreciate that.

      Thank you so very much for leaving the comment. Yes, I wanted to do as much sharing of what I was seeing in the shop windows as that is a good sampling of what one can expect on a watch hunting trip in Japan. It’s such a fantastic place for collectors of all things let alone just watches. There have been comments about organizing a watch collector trip to Tokyo and that would be a a lot of fun. It’s something to think about for the future. As I would be interested in being involved in something like that.

I am happy I got this one which is a 2021 model with box and papers. I love wearing the watch and it’s a great compliment to my passion for aviation and travel. I love the Air King that I purchased, yes, it is a very simple design. I just like the green hand and the little gold or yellow Rolex crown on the black face. It’s also elegant I think. And I’ve been wearing it most days this year. I bought a black submariner when I was in Japan a year earlier and that one is in my safety deposit box but in all fairness, I enjoy it just as much as the Air King and it’s on my list to stop by my bank and swap the watches over .. and bring the Submariner out for an airing.

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci +1

      This is a great question. I was completely unaware that Hong Kong is also a Rolex watch cornucopia much like Tokyo, and I learned that from other people that have left comments on these videos. I have not been to Hong Kong since the mid 1990s (when the old Kai Tak airport was operating), and perhaps one day I’ll go back again to see with my own eyes. As a Canadian citizen, I have a fear to visit Hong Kong for my safety, so I am not sure if I will ever be comfortable to make that trip.

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Great question. I’ve only ever purchased two Rolex watches in Japan, and both times it was with credit card. The shops in Japan are all too happy to accept credit card. They don’t care if it’s a $10,000 purchase or a one dollar purchase. They don’t charge extra if it’s a credit card purchase, nor give a discount in most cases for a cash purchase, although I did see some shops at Nankano Broadway posting cash prices .. but it’s only a few out of dozens, I hope this helps in answering your question.

      Thank you very much. I appreciate that. It’s not just Rolex watches that are in the various shops that I visited in Tokyo … they almost all have an assortment of brands. And with Tokyo being ground zero for Seiko, I suspect there are huge selections at all the shops that I visited .. but I didn’t personally focus on them. So if you visit Nakano Broadway or even this shop featured in the video, I’m quite certain you’re going to find an amazing supply of Seiko watches. Good luck with your visit and let me know how it goes. I’d love to know.

      There is a great watch store near Shibuya scramble HOUSE KIHIROBA. Its over about 3 floors - its on the smaller scale but they have 100s or Rolex and about 30-50 or so GS in stock (or they did when I went). The GS is on the 2nd or 3rd floor I forget. Its very close to another watch shop too, you wont miss it. WATCHNIAN. About 200ft away. I saw a great deal on an SBGA231 back in June and still kick myself to this day that I did not get it. Worked back to about £3000GBP. I am going back at the end of this year and will be one of the first places I go haha.

      It is Kame Kichi .. but they do not have their name printed in English characters on the sign atop their shop entrance .. so that’s not totally useful information unless you speak Japanese. You’ll need to look at the sign in Japanese characters from my video and then match that to the sign a top the shop. I guess you could ask somebody for Kame Kichi and hope for the best. But a very small percentage of the Japanese population are able to speak English. Your best bet is just to look for the sign.

      The tax-free prices posted in the video for late model new or near new Rolex Air-Kings is in the low ¥10 million range. I think this is around $7500 US. @WatchFanHenry  Před 5 měsíci +2

      Great questions. I’ve never asked to purchase with cash, so I can’t speak in a broad sense for all the shops here .. but I did notice a few shops had a cash price listed on their price tickets, which was even lower than the duty-free price with credit cards. But this was just a few shops. I have never negotiated price and have purchased three watches over the past five years in Tokyo. I just wasn’t up to negotiate. This was because I put a lot of time into price comparing, and I was happy with the prices I was paying. Maybe other people can comment on this aspect.

      You’re right that’s very very funny watch tourism we’ve coined a new term here!! I can envision tour companies, organizing, specialized tours for watch fans. It’s a business opportunity for somebody I think! Fabulous idea and these would be tourist. I would personally be interested in attending OK to your question about haggling I’m just speaking for myself personally, but I didn’t think it was something that is done in Japan. I’ve been visiting that country for about 15 years now and I’ve visited many aviation, shops and shops, and I’ve just sent that it’s either, very formal or just not done there cause I’ve never seen anybody negotiating on price, but then again, I’m limited to only the English speakers. It’ll be interesting to see how other people respond to this question, but where I purchased my watch as the prices were so good, I also felt that if I didn’t buy the watches, they would be somebody to purchase them at the posted price very quickly, this is because I know how competitive the prices are compared to inflated prices in North America in Europe that I’ve been seeing over the last several years.

      The exact same applies for me as a Canadian when I bring a watch from Japan into Canada in that I have to pay 12% in total tax to bring the watch into the country so I have proper paperwork on the watch. From my personal observations at used Rokex watch shops in the greater London area, I found the prices in Japan to be well under 20% of those in the UK .. but these were just my observations from the Burlington arcade watch shops. Perhaps you have access to other UK watch shops that you visit where the prices are considerably lower than those at Burlington Arcade which would tip the equation in your favor as you explain. I’m guessing these shops might be outside of London, where rents are very high and have to be passed on in the form of higher watch prices.

      Good question thank you .. yes you’re right I’m not a Daytona guy, so I didn’t focus on them with my films in Tokyo. I can tell you they are there but I think the prices were pretty much standard for what you’d pay in North America or Europe. Daytona is beyond my budget for me personally so that’s why I missed filming them which was a mistake. I’m very sorry about that and will include them next time.

      There are literally dozens of Rolex stores, and I went into each one, and most of their names are written in Japanese on the awnings so there’s no way I could tell you the names of the stores that I went to. All I can say is if you’re a serious watch fan, you’re going to need to budget a full day just for Nankano Broadway.

      I have been searching for Rolex watches for the last five years in Canada, the United States, and all over Europe in the United Kingdom, and I have never seen prices anywhere close to as cheap as they are in Japan. If you can tell me where there are cheaper Rolex watches, we would love to know. I also feel very safe when shopping for Rolex watches in Japan, everybody seems to be wearing Rolex watches in the shopping centers and restaurants, and there aren’t gangs of thieves, holding people up at knife point or gunpoint like they are in the United Kingdom, so I take great comfort in watch shopping in Japan because it is a civilized country .. much more so than Europe and North America.

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think if we look through my three Tokyo Rolex videos here on CZcams the cheapest stainless steel watch is going to be some of the Explorers (II series).. and I think they were in the mid fives USD if my memory serves correct. I’m talking larger than 36 mm so if you’re open to a 36 mm watch then that’s a different story and there’s vintage watches in the $2000 to 3000 range as you’ll see in my videos.

    Problem with buying grey market Rolex is you can never be sure if it’s a fake or Frankenstein…they are so easy to fake or change parts with the simple dial and closed case back. It will be great if you can do a video on Rolex AD in Tokyo if they have any inventory for walk ins. Plan to goto Tokyo myself in a few months but definitely not buying used Rolex….used JLC / breguet tradition yes

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I think the Franken situation is more of an issue with the used and vintage watches that are older versus the watches that are five years old and newer. But I do not have the skills to tell Franken watch. Hopefully I can develop those skills in the future. So, my philosophy is to stick with the Japan dealers that I know that sold me good watches in the past in Japan. By the way, I have had my watches purchased from Japan checked and they are not Frankin so I know who my dealers are that are trustworthy from my own personal experience.

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci +2

      This is a valid concern. If you’re buying a vintage watch obviously it’s not an issue for a $3000 or $2000 40-year-old watch but if you’re buying a new watch that’s in the $15-$20,000 range then I think you have to be very careful. I would only deal with certain dealers that have stellar reputations like the biggest of the dealers like Quark and Jack Road. Also make sure you get a watch that has a matching warranty card to the serial number of the watch. If you’re dealing with a store that’s one of the biggest, I think it’s a lesser risk than if you’re dealing with a small store where you the only person in there. Every watch I’ve purchased in Tokyo .. the seller puts the serial number on the invoice and that matches the warranty tag, so I think that’s about as good as one can get. I guess you could have another shop inspect the watch while you’re there .. just thinking out loud. I wish I had a better answer for you.

    It is Nakano, not Nankano.
    Recently Rolex have drastically increased their retail prices, so a basic explorer is not ¥780,000-ish but over ¥1,000,000. Now is an incredibly bad time to buy a Rolex because the bubble is bursting and as you show there is a huge stock of watches with few customers, so expect prices to fall or even plummet.
    And purchasing a very old Rolex is quite iffy because the mechanisms are much less reliable and there is the problem of parts, which is why people get rid of them in the first place.

    • @WatchFanHenry

      Thank you for the Nakano typo correction.. much appreciated🙏🙏. I butcher a lot of Japanese names and have to work on that.

    • @WatchFanHenry
      @WatchFanHenry  Před 4 měsíci

      You are right .. my videos show a huge, huge supply of ROLEX watches. I’m guessing there’s probably $1 billion worth of ROLEX watches in that one building Nakano Broadway. So that’s going to take a lot of tourists to absorb that inventory investment, and there aren’t that many tourists wanting to spend $5-$10k on a watch. In time, perhaps the watch prices will come down even further as you suggest, time will tell. But I should say, for those who do want to have a Rolex watch now, it’s better to find a piece in a place like Tokyo, instead of in North America or Europe, where one will pay a bigger premium. Your comment about the old Rolex watches needing more repairs is true it’s like an old vehicle. I actually have a 1948 bubble back that I cannot get repaired in North America so it’s on my list to take the watch back to Geneva to see if Rolex themselves can get it working.

      @@WatchFanHenry Thank you for your reply. I did not expect it. I live fairly close to Nakano but have not been to that watch shop. Still waiting for prices to fall ! Personally, I always want to hand carry the watch box with me. I don’t want it getting lost in the mail as it’s an integral part of the watch. Also, I prefer to pay whatever duty must be paid and have official paperwork that it’s been paid and legally imported into Canada, as that does add value and legitimacy to my watch, when the day comes to resell it. Without proper import papers with my name on it, and proof of duties paid, it makes a watch “sketchy” when you try to sell it. This is just my personal opinion, of course .. and everybody is different in this regard.
