- We believe that most planted aquariums thrive better with regular water changes. Tropica usually recommend at least a 25% water change every two weeks, with larger and more frequent water changes yielding even better results in our experience.
All living organisms create waste, including plants, and this waste will accumulate in the aquarium. Water changes simply help to dilute this waste, helping to keep the aquarium water fresh and therefore promoting better health for its occupants.
Water changes are also useful to prevent any excess build up of nutrients from adding liquid fertilisers. A large weekly water changes helps to reset the nutrient levels, as well as improving overall healthy by diluting waste organics.
If in doubt change more water!

Thank you George. I really like this video series with Tropica. You being there for them changes everything. I do 50% every week in all my tanks. Planted and not. The only exception is my fry tank LOL. Have a wonderful week!
Perfect water change tutorial! Thank you for even explaining the process of why we do the water changes! One thing that I really had not thought about is plants creating waste themselves... They are living organism 🌱😁 thank you George and Tropica! I hope you and your families have a very blessed weekend! Thank you for sharing!🌱🐟🌿🙏
Awesome video. Great pictures. I change 50% every sunday and do it just like you. 👍
Hey George, I do a 50 to 70% water change every week. Thanks for the great content!
Thank you. This was very helpful.
Amazing video thank you!!!
Great tips. Thank you.😊👍
very helpful tips ..ty George
thank you tropica and george uncle
I tried to see how long I could go without a water change. But,really I was just going against old school and now have to admit that once a week 40-50% water changes makes a better aquarium. Just does. Besides healthy, looking at water with no tint in a see-through aquarium is a great joy. What tropical dreams are made of.
50% every Week.
That is a awesome Red Fish an Scape.
Awesome!!
great advice
Every week 50% water change I the method is exactly what you have demonstrate in the video.
Hi George! 25-50% water change once a week. Thank you for this short video about water change. I’ve learned so much. Greetings from Aarhus N
Hey George, I usually do 40-50% water change every 7-10days.
love that crypts
Mantaf bro.. nice.. nice..nice
Happy weekend water change 🌱🌱🌱
Hi I’ve got three tanks and they all get a 30% every 3 days and them every two weeks do a 70% water change. Plants definitely grow better and it keeps right on top of the algae. Never really need to clean the glass
Nowadays I'm doing 30% water changes once a month as a bare minimum, but ideally at least 1/6 at least every week. I'll probably rise it to 30 % every week. I'm using 1:1 osmosis and tap water mix, most of the latter staying 8 - 24 hours in the buckets.
Approx 50% every week new to planted tanks and fitting co2 tomorrow aswell
50% once a week, I usually do maintenance and waterchanges on my tanks on Saturdays
I have a nano tank, 12liters. I perform weekly water changes, every friday. I change about 35% (4 liters). No fishes, just shrimp and snails.
Good nice...👍👍👍🥰
Hey George, hw often i need to change the water for newly built planted tank??
Funny this gets posted the day I always do a water change on my nano tank. Usually only do 20-30% weekly but that's cause there only rcs in there lol and the colony is still small.
I am new to co2 setup. I am completely lost. I have looked all over the internet, and i find no answer to my question.
But i see you have a co2 diffuser while you are doing a water change.
Is it a good idea to do water change with the co2 on and lights on?
Or when is it a good time to do a water change if you run a co2 system?
I'm in my 2nd week... and i'm still doing 50% per day. Trying to cycle :)
What's the name of that U shape vaccum you used to siphon water from the big tank?
Usually it's around the 30% to 40% weekly for my 25 gallon. But i sometimes do 2 x 25% in the same week
Hi George. Woud it be better if I do 80% water change? Thanks
Hello.
Doesn't adding tap water directly to the tank kill the bacteria ? I allways fill buckets of water then let them sit for 2 min. Before adding them into my tanks . I would love to just fill with a hose . And then add dechlorinator , if so , do you dose the hole tank or just he necessary amount for the added tap water ?
Thanks .
I change my water at most once a week 50% to 25% of the water. I just eye ball the amount.
The most I will ease up is 2 weeks for some tanks. If it is easing up, I also ease up on feeding the plants.
I do condition and then heat the water before hand however. Heating up the water a day before is my strategy. This way some of the ammonia from my tap can be eliminated early before being added to the tank.
Hello,
I wonder if you could advise me with an issue which i am having with nitrite.
My aquarium has been running for 3 week. Water changes has been made everyday on the first week then everything 2 days on the second week and then every 3 days on third week.At l’east 1/3 of water from the tank (140 litres)
The problem is my nitrite stays at 0.6, but my ph4 is at 0,05 and nO3 is at 5 which are ok.
Yesterday i have change 50 litres of water but To no avail the nitrite is still at 0,6.
I will be grateful if you could help me.
Thanking you.
Selva.
Great video, thanks!
Question: I have a new 75 g tank about 4 weeks old. It’s cycled successfully, but the water has a green tint from algae. Is water change sufficient? Or is there something else I should be doing?
Worth a try!
What type of tank/stand was the small aquarium?
Great video! What is that water spout that you're using to refill the tank with?
Hi Becky. Are you referring to the fertilizer? tropica.com/en/plant-care/liquid-fertilisers/premium-nutrition/
I change about 70% once a week in all my tanks. My fish love it and no problem with algae or sickness.
Do you use tap water?
@@soocyk yes, I live in Norway and have very good water, I actually don’t use prime or something like that to clean the water. But it depends on where you live.
HI George thank you for the guidance. May i ask you which water change system would you recommend as our kitchen tap is around 15m away from where our tank is setup
Hi. That sounds like a rather long hose setup there; your best option becomes the old bucket. Good luck!
30% once a month for flushing the filter media. Topping up a litre or so every week after syphoning waste and discarded food.
I do 1/3 waterchange in my cycled tank, and now in new tank doing more frequent waterchange (50%)
Hi George, do I need to do WC even the nitrate is around 10ppm? I feel like I do WC mainly because I overdose fertilizers
We find the water changes are useful regardless of nitrate levels.
I've honestly never measured other than siphoning into empty gallon jugs & replacing with what I took out or refilling my tanks up to the mark I put on all tanks when I first set up. The amount of water I change depends on the stock load and waste producing load of each tank. I feel it is important to change water because the minerals in new water are not depleted like old water and they are more available for fish to use in new water which then, keeps them healthy.
So I am planning to set up my first aquascape in the next month or so, so i am completely new to the hobby. I am trying to learn as much as possible so I dont make any costly mistakes. I have limited equipment atm and will be doing water changes with a bucket and a siphon using my kitchen water tap. When do I dechlorinate the water? Before or after I add it to the tank? How do I ensure the water temp is safe so I do not shock the livestock during the water change?
Hi Jon, Welcome to the hobby first of all! 🌱🤞 You can try having a look at our Tropica Live series for some of the easier scaps and plenty of knowledge along the way.
Unless you have a toxic water it should be fine as is. You would do it before adding it to the tank if you're keen on it. You can use a thermometer or your hands, unless you have very sensitive fish it's not really a problem. 50% water changes shouldn't impact the temperature drastically especially during summer.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants thanks for the advice. I will check out the Tropica Live series for so more tips. Very much appreciated
I’ll be honest, I don’t do water changes in my 180 but every few months. My parameters stay good and my fish do better. Of course that’s just me. Not saying it’s right for all. I have a heavily planted tank and many small fish other than 2 Angel fish. I found the once a week or once twice a week caused me more problems with fish deaths and plant problems. I’m NOT kicking anybody that do weekly water changes by any means but I wonder if sometimes we keep it too perfect when fish don’t live in any perfect environment. My water stays crystal clear. I’m thinking of slowly adding tannins. I do use leaves.
Was really surprised to see a water change being performed, during the Co2 cycle
Hi Bob, we don't normally interrupt the CO2 flow as we like to favor steady parameters within the tanks.
No CO2, medium light for 8 hours/day, low livestock density, ~50-70% density easy category plants, hard tap water... 50% every two weeks.
During the cycling process should I be doing water changes?
We advocate using plants to cycle the aquarium and water changes help with that.
Hi George! Do you have scaping video of this 120?
Yes, you can find it on George's channel.
Hmm This is the first time I see that someone purs tap water in the Aquarium and after it is filled, he adds the dechlorinator. As an expert, do you know if this does any harm to the fish? I have always used a huge barrel to mix dechlorinator with tap water and THEN I pur the water in the aquarium. Can I do it like you? Won't the chlorine burn their gills momentarily with your method?
The chlorine levels in this water are very low. If in doubt the dechlorinator first.
MY 20 GALLON AQUARIUM GETS A 25% WATER CHANGE WEEKLY. MY WATER IS CHRYSTAL CLEAR WITH 5 PPM NITRATES BEFORE THE CHANGE. I HAVE NOW ADDED SOME PLANTS SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO BUT OBSERVE PLANTS FOR THE NEXT MONTH. I DO ADD API'S LEAF ZONE WEEKLY WITH THE WATER CHANGES.
Hi, quick question. Do u add the declorinator before or after replacing the water change?
During
@@TropicaAquariumPlants ok thanks
When is the water change best to be done.. In the photo period or outside photo period?
We find it doesn't matter, as long as it is done regularly.
Hi. How often and how much water change i have to do in first weeks when i have Tropica plant growth Substrate i my Aquarium?
Hi Kamil. If you want to be diligent and get off to a perfect start, 1/day first week, 1 every 2 days 2nd week, and gradually get to 1 per week from there.
Thanks a lot 💪
Do you add dechlorinator after filling?
Yes, in here. The chlorine levels are low.
What is the fish 4:40 ?
Do you use water from the net directly ? No RO ?? Thank you
Hi Carlo. In this case yes but it depends on your water parameters; some waters might be too hard, it's always a good idea to check it first.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants hi! What parameters need for tap water? How much kh and gh?
Can I use mineral water for shrimp planted tank
Hi, we would advise against it because it's hard to determine how much is enough or "too much".
Is it not dangerous to do large water changes in a CO2 injected tank? How do I ensure it is done safely to prevent large pH swings?
Hi Regan. Depending on the tank we'd shut off the CO2 for the maintenance; that being said we haven't registered large enough ph swings to endanger the tank, thus you're safe to do a large water change without worrying too much about the pH variation.
Hi sir my name Rohit Sharma and my aquarium plants tank planted tank daily water change (yes no) please comment
1x 70% water change a week minimum. Most weeks I do an additional 30% water change mid-week. Since I started this regime I’ve noticed the plants look even happier than they were before (and they were pretty vibrant before). In the past I’ve been able to do 1x 50% with other scapes and see the same results I’m currently getting, but the current layout seems to benefit from more frequent water changes with more volume shifted.
I change 10 liters every day. I have a 30 gallon.
how about 50% per 2 days?
I Forgot To tell you that i have added easystart bacteria several times
I do like 20-10 water changes every weed and 50-60 water change of it is a deep clean and a 100-99 water change of someone is sick
my plant tank driftwood fungus
how to remove fungus
Toothbrush can be useful. Then water change afterwards.
I do 30% water change once a week.
So ive been told by expert fish keepers that doing a 20% every 2 weeks is way better than say a 50% weekly, mostly due to the fact you're disturbing the settled water to much, basically the good bacteria in the tank is being tossed out etc, thoughts?
Hi, that's also a good point but if you think of a river and how the water is being constantly flushed with different elements being introduced all the time, the fish aren't necessarily that affected.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants But they're wild, tank bred fish are adapted to a tanked environment
40-50% every 7 days, 2 years old aquariums, heavy planted, no problems so far
Can I use tap water?
@@soocyk depends on your tap water parameters, i use tap water but i got it first tested
50 percent every 3 to 4 days works for my tank
I have an 84L tank , I change 20L after every 4days , is it okay ?
Sounds good.
@@TropicaAquariumPlants big fan sir ❤️ I will visit these gorgeous tank's when I became adult 😬 , love from Bangladesh ❤️❣️
