  • In this video, I share my experience of taking a shared taxi from Oran to Bechar, Algeria. The journey was full of unexpected events.
I started my journey at the taxi station in Oran, we waited for the taxi driver to stack and organize the luggage of all passengers under the supervision of uncle Jalool, an old man organizing and matching passengers with taxis to their destinations.
The cost for the 9 hours trip was 1500 Algerian dinars each which is about $10 us dollars.
Once we were on the road, our driver began to prepare what looked like chewing tobacco, but with a unique twist.
It's known as Naffah, crafted from a plant called "رمث" in Arabic, or Haloxylon in english, blended together with tobacco and various other ingredients.which works as a stimulant to enhance alertness. and It seems to be their secret to staying vigilant during these long exhausting trips.
Driving through the desert was amazing, and I got to see some incredible scenery.
About halfway through the trip, the car overheated. However, the driver was able to fix the car with a bottle of water.
We continued on our journey, and as we were driving into Bechar, it started to rain. This was a surprise to everyone, as it hadn't rained in the desert in years. the roads turned treacherous, but our driver handled it like a pro. It's almost like he mentally mapped out every twist and turn.
We finally arrived in Bechar at night. The rain had stopped, but the sky was still dark.
