    One thing to point out about recording the S5 with the Video Assist is that when using BRAW, the only stabilization available is the IBIS (no e-stabilization or Boost IS available). Same with ProRes, unless you change the HDMI output from 12 bit RAW to 10 bit 422, then you get access to every digital features of the camera. May be obvious for some people, but maybe not for those who aren't very familiar with RAW images. Even though you don't get 5.9K with ProRes, it is still a VERY good option to choose instead of BRAW, since the e-stabilization and Boost IS options are truly AMAZING! Yes, it crops in a little bit (not as much as APS-C mode), but you still end up with a 4K image (since this is a 6K sensor), so just back up to get the same framing, and you're all good. It's truly worth it for shooting handheld. So, I'd use BRAW 5.9K for tripod shots and when using any kind of stabilizer, and i'd use ProRes HQ for handheld shots, since I find the digital stabilizing options in the S5 better than stabilizing in post

      can you record ProRes internally? What if I'm working with Davinci Resolve and not Premiere Pro? Then I would still like to get (B)RAW. Is there any option to access (B)RAW and better stabilisation both simultaneously without getting a gimbal?

    • @davidmultimedia2024
      @davidmultimedia2024 Před rokem

      @@maltsday Not sure I understand your questions man… You can not get ProRes or BRAW without the Video Assist 12G (you can not get that internally). With BRAW, since it’s RAW, you won’t have access to any electronic stabilization (only IBIS, which is a mecanical stabilization). However, with ProRes you can access every stabilization mode, just like with the S5’s internal codecs.

Would love to see some footage comparisons, mainly - BRAW from S5 vs Pocket 6K BRAW, Dynamic range comparison (Highlight recovery, rolloff, shadow noise, banding etc), and details in high-detail footage such as foliage - maybe a comparison of internal highest S5 10 bit 422 codec versus the BRAW at Q0 / 3:1. Just bought Video assist and I'm a bit disappointed. There is no DCI 4K in 60 fps. My ninja v has it. Also scopes are not very functional. On ninja you can monitor in 709 or in hdr.. on the assist the is no such a thing. The menus on ninja are clearly laid out. You pick the camera then vlog or hlg or prores raw. You can also record in different gamma like DCI p3. Ninja I think is much better option if you planning to shoot in prores 422 or hlg. Braw is the only advantage for video assist. And considering the price of ninja, ninja is a better option....

    • @charlesn
      @charlesn  Před rokem +1

      I definitely agree that the Ninja is what you need for ProRes and that is the true divider for most of us. I personally shoot in BRAW so the Video Assist makes sense for my work flow. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Ninja V!

    Have you noticed that the video assist applies false color on the v-log input feed? How is that supposedto work correctly when false color only has any meaning after colorspace conversion to rec.709?

    • @charlesn
      @charlesn  Před rokem

      I haven't noticed any false color on the vlog input feed. I just make sure to turn the S5 HDMI output to off if I'm recording to ProRes: Menu > Gear Icon > IN/OUT (5th down) > HDMI Rec Output > Info Display > Select "OFF". Otherwise, if you are running 10 bit RAW (Camera > Image Format 2 (4th down) > HDMI RAW Data Output > Select "ON") the Info display is automatically selected to off, so it won't add the chance of false color in the BRAW file.

    • @pyalot
      @pyalot Před rokem +1

      @@charlesn I mean if you toggle the s5 to raw output (for braw recording) it automativally goes to v-log, and then if you toggle on fakse color on the video assist, it does it on the vlog, so the skin color and neutral grey levels are off. If you apply a v-log to rec 709 lut on the cideo assist, it does not shift the false color, meaning the video assist only applies false color directly in its input feed…

      The tests I've run in vlog shower much lower noise in the picture with lower ISO (320) which is similar to typical cameras (100 ISO or less) instead of optimum performance with dual ISO (640 and 4000). If you have an S5, try shooting a dark scene in ISO 320, 640, 1000 and 2000. Then zoom in 20x and see the difference in banding and noise. It was pretty apparent on my last test that the 320 was still the cleanest. Let me know your results if you try it.
