Fettucine Alfredo is an actual Italian dish, except it's really only served at one restaurant in Rome, where it was invented. So, not common, but definitely Italian. It got famous/widespread in America because a couple of American silent movie stars had it on their honeymoon in the 20's and became obsessed with it. The main difference is that the original version is only pasta, butter and parmigiano reggiano. There's no cream, parsley, garlic, pepper or anything else.
Thanks for clearing it up.
Pasta in bianco (pasta in white) is the home made dish that Italians prepare, generally when they are tired, hungry and looking for a quick fix. It's only pasta, butter and freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano. That's in the North of Italy. In the South, they prefer olive oil instead of butter.
it isnt traditional and was made by an italian in the us pretty sure
Mai sentito
It's not an Italian dish. Cream or milk isn't used in Italy. Egg whites and pasta water is what is used instead of cream.
Ernie is the type of person that makes a city special. Trust me I love chain stores and touristy things as much as the next guy but if you're willing to make a random stop along the way and check a place out, chances are there's a story there. Great video!
"Trust me I love chain stores and touristy things..." Why?
I love that in an locality called "Little Italy", the first Italian she hears is from an Australian. NY is such a melting pot
There's a large Italian diaspora in Australia too.
In other words, most people from arround the world live there!😄
Loved the segment with Ernie! He’s old school NYC to the core. We’ll have to visit!
You better!
There is an Italian area in the Bronx Arthur Ave which is less touristy. People travel from outside the city to shop and eat there. Outside It's sad businesses cannot afford their rents. So many of the original restaurants and stores have left. NYC does not support small businesses. Thumbs up.
It's not really a "Little Italy" there either, the last of the Italians there are like 70+ years old. The shops are still around, but I'm not sure how much longer they can last.
Mary Jane, you cannot get more Italian than her. This is an enjoyable video. 2 of the best NYC vloggers.
I LOVED this. Ernie makes me want to hop on a plane and visit tomorrow. That and the cheese shop! I love it.
:)
It should be mandatory that on every video there's a shot of Ben eating something 😀
I totally agree!
Yassss
Ben is a wonderful assistant/sidekick/ camera man! I enjoy his comments when he chimes in. They are worth way more than 2 cents!
I hate that my parents found out i get high on my CZcams channel as my career smhh
This reminds of going to Italy back in 2019. Love the Italian food and culture.
Store owner yelling at people to come in...used to be so common on Orchard street..😂
Actually the old Manganeros grocery was the oldest place Italian place in New York City. It really reflected how Italian food changed over time in the city. It went down just before the pandemic hit due to a business issue trying to open a sandwich shop nearby Opened in the late 1890s and it just kept up with the times although the food is just classic Sicilian with a slight American twist. You see them put tomato sauce on the food and it’s like cooked right which takes all day. You just felt how old it was and how caring it was now it’s just another empty storefront.
Sadly this is the direction many places are going. I'm in Midtown East. I was told by one place closing it was because of the rent abd lack of office workers coming back. Sadly too much business lost.
Another area with an Italian vibe is Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Thumbs up.
Just wanna say that your channel is so good, awesome content, if you can say hello to Brazil and make a video like this showing more of our food in NYC! 🤙🏼🙏🏼
100% the best video you have made! Well done and very professional.
I'm Italian Awesome Video You Both Did A Great Job
it's nice to see My favorite New York CZcamsrs in one video.Italian food is the Best 🇮🇹
Really appreciate the different perspectives!
That was cool when Mary Jane started singing ! Awesome 👌 video Mr.Barr 👍
It’s a shame these neighborhoods are disappearing! The city government should do everything possible to preserve them. Americans have a thing w destroying history for some reason? Italian history in New York/New Jersey should be preserved. I hope we preserve our Italian heritage in my country (Mexico) like our Italian neighborhoods in Mexico City that few people know about. Cheers from Mexico! Great video and great co-host!
That Aussie speaking Italian was mint!
Grazie Millie!
There's a lot of Italians in Australia!
The greatest thing about your channel is that you have a revolving and recurring set of guest CZcamsrs who are familiar faces and add so much. You're a lucky guy to have them on.
The Barr-iverse! 😂
hahahah
Yay love your collabs with Mary Jane!
I can't wait! I'll be there in 3 weeks
As an Italian married with a newyorker, in NYC you can find good Italian food. Btw Fettucine Alfredo was created 100years ago in Rome, it’s true that in Italy we don’t eat it and in a proper Italian restaurant you will never find that dish.
Cool, I’ll definitely come visit these spots when I come to New York.
Jon I added Little Italy on my list of neighborhoods to visit in NYC !
It's worth a stop!
Nice video. Great info. Thanks and take care.
Hey Jon, yea it's very touristy but I love the vibes when we were there twice, some shops still sell food and items from Italy. Pasta are always nice in that part of NYC.
Jon
Cool video. Well I've walked thru the whole Little Italy from Tribeca to Chinatown via Grand st. When my brother use to work on Chambers St.
This was all before the Pandemic.
I just love this upload something about it is so warm and kinda comforting. Positivity peace and love 💛
It went in a direction I didn't even see it go.
@@HereBeBarr I just loved it. thank you for the upload. positivity peace and love 💛
Love it! I will have to visit that shop
Very good video!
Thank you.
Great video - Thanks
I learn a lot from your channel ❤
Love this ..well done
I went looking for stuffed artichokes in Little Italy I found them at Puglia it was good but not to die for, I found to die for stuffed artichokes at a stand where they sold just stuffed artichokes made fresh from scratch in Ocean City, New Jersey, those were to die for, I still remember them I want them now, we were there three days I went to the stand everyday
Love this holistic tour!
Thansk Ben!
Awesome video. I will be in New York in 1 month and I will definitely going to mr rossi and, if I can bring it in the airplane, i want to bring him some Italian food, he seems like an amazing person. Can I ask you if you can make a video about historical/famous musical places in nyc? Like famous jazz club or records selling. Thank you Barr!
Ernie is so precious 🥺
When I make the shlep to Little Italy, I have found Puglia's to be extremely consistent and extremely American, but in a 1950's kinda way. My daughter said she kept expecting to see Sinatra walk through the door any minute.
Italian food is my favorite, the real one.
Your dishes look so delicious, enjoy 😀😍👍
Oh, it’s delightful you brought Mary Jane back! You two always make a great team!-True story, the original Italian restaurant at the Italy pavilion at EPCOT was actually owned by THE “L’Original Alfredo di Roma” restaurant owner and THE Alfredo who created Fettuccine Alfredo-So, I actually got to try the original recipe Fettucine Alfredo (back the first time I visited in 1983…my dad insisted!)….AND IT WAS BLAND AND TERRIBLE!! SO disappointing!
all the food looked amazing
Great guest cohost indeed. Wow so sad ‘legendary’ places closing 😢🙏🏻🇺🇸🇮🇹
Can you do a part 2 of Bronx’s little Italy?
Will definitely check out e.Rossi & company.! thanks for the recommendation
You should!
Fiat Cafe is my favorite little Italian restaurant in Little Italy that I always make a point going to when I am in NYC.
Great job...thanks!
I went to Caffe Napoli thanks to Jon.. and oh my the pollo nostra/ chicken with vodka sauce and burrata unbelievable 🔥🤤
The first three courses of the family style meal at La Mela is my favorite Italian food ever.
Fettucine Alfredo is widely eaten in Italy. It's just that in Italy it goes by the name of pasta in bianco.
Beautiful, god bless and thank you both!🙏👍
Dean Martin did a cover of Volare, and that's where I know that song, nice collab peeps
Good job, sir, to try all the food which one was the best restaurant you tried
Amazing
Craving some cannoli with an espresso now!
Real Little Italy is in the Bronx-Arthur Avenue
I love Arthur Ave!!
Dude got vocals!
Excellent video as usual Jon! Suggestion for future video….Miss seeing you and Adriana….perhaps a Take the family out for Spring video, showing the city in warmer, showing off budding trees/flowers/green grass, of course cute shots of the little one, and perhaps doing a dessert crawl. Because Jon…everyone needs dessert, everyone needs the hint of NY Spring…and a smiling family…! 🙋🏼♀️😉❣️
Great idea
I love this. And to throw one more idea into the running, maybe Baby’s First Picnic in Central Park when it starts to warm up more!
@@ninja_tony You missed one already with baby at Dumbo in November on Adriana’s CZcams channel 😅😊
@@ninja_tony actually her channel is called Adriana Marvan on CZcams
Looks good
Fettuccine Alfredo is actually very Italian. It was invented in Rome by Alfredo Di Lelio in the early 20th century, the original restaurant still serves to this day. Don’t know why I’m fuming so much when they both agreed it’s an American dish!
It is a bit disappointing when channels like these are so misinformed. Nobody should eat a pre-stuffed canoli. Misses the whole point. Little Italy in NYC is a very Americanized version of what tourists who have never been think Italy must be like. IMO, it's a caricature. Much better to visit Italy and find out for yourself. Also, taking one person of Italian heritage around does not make her an authority of all things Italian or authentic Italian. Silly and preposterous.
I'm sorry... i'm italian and i tell you... fettuccine Alfredo don't exist in any "real" restaurant from north to south Italy! It's not enough for a restaurateur to say he invented them if no restaurant and no one at home cooks them!!! You can't call it an "original italian recipe" if no one in Italy prepares it! It's a "original" italian/american recipe, there's nothing wrong or bad with saying that!!!!👍😉
@@gabrielesantucci6189 just because it’s not served in any of the restaurants you like, doesn’t mean it wasn’t created in Italy!
@@seyvendI absolutely don't want offend you, but no one knows what you wrote in Italy. And in any case... i repeat ...if It was an italian recipe, why does no italian know them or cook them? It's because It's not an italian recipe and not because they are not served in restaurants i like, and i know something more about Italy than you since i was born and live in Italy!!!👍😉
Been going to Arturo's on Houston since the sixties, not right IN little Italy, but close enough.
I’ve been gone for years but it’s terribly sad that Allev😢a is closing.
IMPORTANT: Fettuccine Alfredo originated in Rome italy and than spread to america
Omg… love Ernie
Hey Barr, this question has nothing to do with Little Italy. You did a video awhile back about restaurants & this one place think you ordered a hamburger, but for dessert you ordered this huge sundae. It was HUGE! Video was made before the lockdown. I tried to find it, but no luck. Do you remember this? Made me realize been a fan of your channel for over 4 years! Dang! Thanks!
Damn, I was just there a couple of days ago. I wish I would have seen this video. My friend and I didn't really care for the constant trying to reel you in in their restaurants. They were a little aggressive. It was a little dirty too. It was a pass for me. Luckily there was a whole bunch of shopping stores nearby so it wasn't a waste.
Wait.. Alleva has fried mozzarella sticks? Damn, I missed out when we were there last time. I did go there, but didn't see those. Hopefully they will be in their new spot in August when we visit
I have feeling they will
Nice video - and be careful Jon, there's a giant alligator in your neighborhood looking for cheap eats... 🐊😅🤣
😂😂
@davet1081AA it’s a revenge from Floridian or a NewYorker with a outgrown pet😢😮😅😊😂
I need that postcard!
Yes you do!
Arthur Ave is the real Little Italy
"What a shame, Mary Jane". Via Francigena video's were great
I heard volare in an SNL skit 🤣
Mary Jane is so pretty
Sad to hear Alleva Dairy is closing next month.
Well, the song is actually called "Nel blu dipinto di blu" and not "Volare", but that's a common mistake, I also thought it was called that when I was younger ;-)
I call myself the Black Italian 😂 Italian cuisine is my favorite. I do love going to lil Italy when I’m in NYC I have found a couple of very good small restaurants there. I will definitely visits these stores the next time
OH NO! Fettucine Alfredo IS Italian! It is from Ristorante Alfredo in Roma and it's very famous!!!!
great italian food
Next time bring her to Long Island especially Massapequa Staten island or New Jersey she will get to see the Italian American culture more in these areas with the locals.
Thanks for sharing. The food looks wonderful. Comments from MaryJane are highly regarded as she knows Italian food.
She's great.
@@HereBeBarr She is a wonderful person. I had the pleasure of meeting her in person a few years back.
@@HereBeBarr Of course your reviews are wonderful too. LOL. Best to you and your family.
Hey yo my man has a African-American man I love you I love you videos bro I love it all the time and I try to go to all the spots that you go to peace-loving so and keep up the good work
I appreciate that
NYC is a funny place.
8:34 bless is soul
Fettuccine Alfredo were invented in Rome in the restaurant "Alfredo alla Scrofa". It's still in the city centre of the city...
Si...credici!!!🤌🤦🤣🤣🤣
It’s funny i was in new york staying in china town not even knowing how close i was to little italy i walked by and saw all these restaurants not even knowing what they were i later ordered grubhub and ironically ate at Cafe Napoli food was all good definitely worth it and not expensive
Actually Fettuccine Alfredo is Italian although Italians doesn't used to call them like this but it seems a dish made up in the restaurant Alfredo alla Scrofa in Rome, nowadays other restaurant in Rome started to make because as a consequence of American tourist demands, but I will say Italian version is different than the American one.
Alfredo sauce is actually a custard since it has egg yolks.
So sad to see another legendary old school NYC spot close
My Grandfather is from Italy and he makes fantastic spaghetti and meatballs.
Cerasella, it's the place to go to do proper italian breakfast, sadly Little italy did not surprise me, even though was nice for a walk.
Man they got to put more pasta in the meat ball spaghetti 😭😭
Cannoli are very famous in Sicily ❤
Speaking of chicken wonder what she thinks of chicken roll? Btw still mystery where that came from. Been eating these since 90s. These days hard to get 90 style chicken roll - descent size with lots of melted cheese 😀
Italians are missing out if they don’t have chicken with pasta. I can’t imagine fettuccine Alfredo without grilled chicken 😋.
05:07 if have fallen in love
Every restaurant Jon recommends is on my list of to go/do list in nyc. But not 100% on this one coz i didnt see Ben shoving canolis and meat balls in his mouth. Hey Jon! Is Ben ok? i didnt see him eating in this video? Im very worried right now. Please update us on Ben.
