  • An update on the fan sound issue experienced with the Dell XPS 8930 and what was done to improve the fan volume I experienced on the original model.
    If you compare the original configuration to what I have now, I think you will agree that this has made a massive difference to the usability of this computer. The original sound issue can be experienced here: • DELL XPS 8930 SOUND IS...

    I have the same tower and replaced to the upgraded fan and heatsink. I also replaced my top case fan there in front of the new heatsink but its super loud. Ive tried a 120mm and 140mm. I think the original top fan was 80mm or 92mm. But whrn gaming its stupid loud. Surfing the net nothing. But gaming loud loud loud on top fan.
    I have a i9-9900kf and 3080 gpu.

    After more research Dell sales promised I would get the better heat sink & fan if I ordered the XPS-8930 with the "K" processor (i7-8700K). I took a chance and ordered it and it actually did come that way. I can't believe how much better it is. It is super quiet now, really day and night difference. Very satisfied.

    well, after using this computer for a few years, I have ordered the better heatsink from chinese website. It got a lot better, but if u want it not noisy when gaming, limit CPU under 3.9GHz.

    is that to fan the 92 mm fan or did you up grade it to a 120mm fan?

    Why my xps 8930 doesn't sound loud.. and the Cpu is locked on 3.19ghz I have an i7 8700 not turbo boost on bios... showing .. either

      As I had this issue 5 years ago, I would assume that the computer you have has had improvements done to reduce the noise levels, which is good!

  • @ScamSafeShiba

    will the better heatsink & fan come with all 9th gen models, or only 95W models?

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 2 lety

      I have no idea I’m afraid. I think the best way to fid out is contacting Dell and asking them what the internal heatsink and fan used will be.

    Thank you for the detailed breakdown. I'm not a computer whiz but your video made everything simple. One question for you, i have dell XPS 8930 and i'm thinking of upgrading to the new RTX 3080 and also getting a new power supply with 850 watts, my current card is RTX 2060. 3080 is longer and people pointed out that the top side exhaust fan will be obstructed by the swing out psu. It's a very compact case and i'm concerned about air circulation. Would it be too risky putting 3080 in this case and if i don't replace the fan will it over heat?

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 4 lety

      As you say, the case is compact, and for me, the thought of doing the upgrade on this particular machine is not something I would do personally. If you have a read over here, I think this may give you a better idea on whether its worth doing this or not. www.dell.com/community/XPS-Desktops/XPS-8930-aftermarket-graphic-card-support/td-p/6108418

    Can you post the specific cooling fan you put in your Dell 8930? I want the fan to be much quieter.

    Do you think it would be a bad idea for me to take out the parts of my xps and put them in a new case and put better cooling for the cpu? Would the parts be able to be taken out of the machine and into the new one?

    Have you tried to run any games? I have the XPS8930 with the GTX1080 and the same fan as you have fitted and the PC sounds noisy under load but as I write all I can hear is a low hum. The game I tried to play is Battlefield V - sounds like a jet engine under load...

    • @bobdonda
      @bobdonda Před 5 lety +1

      The XPS 8930 doesn't have great airflow so you can expect a certain amount of noise under load, but there are definitely different levels of noise that are possible.
      I'm guessing that your 1080 came with the PC. Dell uses "blower" style video cards that are unusually loud, and the video card is probably the source of most of the noise for you.
      The stock cooler on the CPU definitely gets a bit loud under load too... I've gotten used to mine though. I have an aftermarket video card with good cooling though, so the amount of fan noise coming from the PC isn't nearly as loud as when it had a blower style video card in it.
      If your video card looks like this it will be loud blog.logicalincrements.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/BLOWER-TYPE2.png

    Hmm would I fit my 32gn of 4 ram sticks in ok? Looks close, I’m tempted to get this cooler and upgrade my i7-9700 to an i9-9900k with this cooler upgrade 🤔

    Just got 8930 with 8700 i7-not the ‘k’ version....has the lousy cpu fan...what would u recommend? Ship back to dell and request this upgraded fan/heat Sink? What is the part name they installed? Thanks! Which XPS has the newer fan? 9700? Or the K systems now?

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 5 lety

      Mr Midi I made the initial contract with Dell on Twitter believe it or not and they responded very quickly. From what I have read, the replacement fan is quite expensive, so this is getting sorted by them under warranty.

    • @ipadmidiking
      @ipadmidiking Před 5 lety +1

      Tech Reality I see... and u have the regular xps 8930 right? Was yours mainly noisy when CPU load got over 25%? What’s the % reduction in noise since they installed the new fan in general? Is it still loud at 100% cpu load or is it a night and day difference? Do you know if it’s the same fan they put in the Special edition K XPS desktops? That’s what I was reading! Sorry for all the questions. Thanks for your help. Just got this PC couple days ago and wanna take care of this before it’s too late!

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 5 lety

      Mr Midi the noise would kick in at high volume and can speed when I ran Chrome.... I disabled the various settings in Chrome to not use any of the hardware acceleration etc... And that made a difference. That new fan you see is the one they just in the k models so I'm led to believe... But being honest, you would need to see inside one to know for sure. They will initially ask for an engineer to come out and replace the fan... He will bring the wrong fan... They will come again.... Replace the fan... Makes no difference... Eventually for me I was offered a refund but did not want that, so thankfully their guys here in Glasgow asked for the system, replaced the fan and it's been a lot better. It will kick the fans in loudly sometimes when Chrome plays silly buggers, but nowhere near as bad as the initial fan.

      @@TechRealityGlasgow Upgraded HeatSink and fan for CPU that comes standard on "K" processor its around $80 USD on big auction site ... so its not that expensive. Look into upgrading your top Exhaust Fan to 120mm fan and your tower will run much cooler.

    Do you know if Dell is now adding the heatsink for all new 8930s?

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 5 lety

      The honest is.. I don't know! I have seen other people review this model and they have the older heatsink and fin, yet others, when they open the case up, have the newer one that Dell fitted for me. I guess you need to ask before buying!

      From my understanding, it depends on your CPU. In the 8-series, you get the better cooler ONLY with the i7 8700k. If you get an i7 8700 or lower, you're going to be getting the cheaper, noisier fan. I'm not sure how they're handling 9-series CPU's.

      James McLoad thanks for that James. I really do hope they improve the fan designs in 2019 to something quieter!

      9700k option shipped with the updated fan/heatsink installed. I didn't call to request it. The whole system is quite quiet, seem to hear the spindal drive over anything else. Enjoying the low-key office computer vibe. Thanks for the replies, fellas. Cheers.

    WARNING - I purchased an XPS 8930 because the sales rep promised it would be quiet and because Dell’s
    website shows the XPS 8930 with the heavy duty heat sink/fan that is shown in
    this video (Part # T57JF and KTDJC). WRONG. It came with the wimpy CPU fan and
    made tons of noise. I called and they would not exchange or fix it. I could
    order the parts and fix it myself but that would invalidate the warranty. The
    only good news is I got a full refund and free shipping back to Dell.

    • @TechRealityGlasgow
      @TechRealityGlasgow  Před 5 lety

      Very surprised about them not helping you as via Twitter, I had about three people all dealing with this and as mentioned, we finally had multiple on-site visits, tech guys agreed about the noise, I was offered refund etc, but I just wanted a quiet machine!! At least I have that most of the time now after that fan change.
