  • “We don't want to lose our identity,” said Joe Pilotte, co-owner of the Ye Olde Orchard Pub, about having to remove certain signs in English because of a complaint to Quebec’s French language watchdog. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

This is horrific. Every other nationality in Quebec is allowed to have their language on signs. I've seen Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Greek etc. to name a few. As someone in the comments mentioned, "Ye" and "Olde" aren't even modern English words. Every culture deserves to have a presence in a city, it's part of what constitutes multi-culturalism.

Not anymore. Signs have to be 2/3 French. Every nationality gets equally discriminated.

I understand the need for businesses that operate in Quebec to have to have employees who speak French. TBD will be to what degree such businesses will need to go so customers who prefer to be served in French over English will feel welcome. On the bright side, enthusiasm to see Quebec leave Canada appears to have waned since the 1995 referendum that featured a narrow rejection by voters of independence of Quebec from Canada.

you think it's right to separate on a vote of 51%? You think Quebec should be able to separate and thus change the constitution without the approval of the other provinces? Anglophones are the minority in Quebec. In many regions of Quebec, francophones are the minority. The solution is simple. A regional approach to language rights. Not that what francophones demand is a right, and not whimsical wants.

@trevorchabot864 Québec hasn't ever signed the constitution, yet tries to modify it in favour of the French language. I have a hard time believing that anywhere in Québec, the francophones are a minority (aside from a very tiny, rural English pocket, perhaps). 99% of the bilingual people I know are angophones. Outside of Montréal, you would have a harder time finding a bilingual francophone.
