  • By request of the vase owner's grandson.
    1. May 10, 1983. Dave calls Dr. Harold Nichols, who owns the world's largest vase, in Ames. Iowa.
    2. May 30, 1983. Dr. Harold Nichols guests on the show, and with him his vase, which is displayed in the studio for the week.
    3. May 31, 1983. The vase on display, Day 2, with Bob Rooney.
    4. June 1, 1983. Questions arise whether the vase is truly the world's largest, so Dave takes corrective action. With VIPs and a Chris Elliott sighting.
    5. June 2, 1983. A Cold Open; then Dave reads children's letters to the vase; and finally, a fitting sendoff.
    6. May 7, 1984. Coda: Dave asks F. Lee Bailey if a lawsuit is warranted on the vase's Canadian challenge.

That was a great interview. I've never seen too much of that period of Letterman and I'm loving it so far. I really see a lot Conan's inspiration here.

It’s especially funny because Seth specifically said he saw this bit on CZcams, but to my understanding, nothing to do with the Worlds Largest Vase is even on the official Letterman channel yet, so he almost HAD to have seen it on the great Don Giller’s channel
      Edit: bit*

Here bc of Seth Myers. Love the history of Late Night: Dave, Conan, Fallon, Seth. There's a special place in heaven for Don Giller.

For those who don't know there were many people considered for Dave's successor. Too name a few, Jon Stewart, Dana Carvey & Garry Shandling (Dana & Garry turned it down. Dana-didn't want to do 5 nights a week. Shandling wanted to go with new a idea of a mockumentary late night talk show he was developing on HBO, The Larry Sanders Show). Lorne pushed for a really funny guy in the office who wanted to perform, Conan O'Brien, (Who? Conan the Barbarian?) and Thank God! Even tho it was a bumpy first couple years, Conan revolutionized the 12:30 slot. Again. God bless Andy Richter.

The radio transmitter tower is actually recreating the feud between the Chrysler building and the Empire State building. Both were built at the same time and the Chrysler building turned out to be a little bit taller. So the Empire State building added a radio tower at the last minute, thereby making it the tallest.

Dave was the anti-Carson. Where Carson's show was a bit stuffy and high-brow, Dave's show was like something you'd see on public access tv on cable. It had such a low budget feel and made the audience feel like they were part of the show as Dave broke down the fourth wall regularly. Dave has been copied to the point that young people today don't get it, but at the time, nothing like this had ever been on TV before. It was funny in part because you couldn't believe this was on national television.
