Here's a useful doc that contains a lot of Zato's combos, setups, & blockstrings with the notations included. It was created by January, big shoutout to them for creating it for the Zato mains.

when you brought up zatos pokes losing to giovanna slash, i felt that holy moly
what i came down here to say as a gio main lmao
@@Kaidrenn that button is so degenerate lol
LOL I rewatched it 3 times it was so funny!! "Your pokes will lose to some troglodyte Giovana slobbering over her slash button" . Gold.
It's especially personal for me because I was doing well in a casual tourney until I got 2-0 by a Giovana just the other day :( .
How did ur bracket go / where was the tournament
@@Loleo2087 nothing special just some online thing for fun. got 4th or 5th or something like that.
I was just holding off playing Zato because I needed a guide for his bnbs. So thanks I can play Zato better now
Something I would like to see is an 'intermediate' guide to zato. I've been playing zato since strive release, and at this point im slowly getting comfortable with poking, flight, antiairs, moving eddie, etc. However, I'm still having a super hard time doing anything properly threatening to my opponents and getting them to respect me.
I've looked for guides, but a lot of it is either too beginner focused ("heres what your moves do, heres what negative edge means") or too advanced (twitter clips of 20 move low>overhead>fuzzy>crossunder sandwich blockstrings). Would you be interested making a zato video answering questions such as: what is zatos win condition? How does he get from neutral into that situation? If im gonna practice a twitter setup, which ones do you recommend?
Anyway, thanks for the explanation video, makes me feel a bit more confident in my chances to really learn zato!
Yeah, I can make something like this as well.
Yo, this would be nice. Slowly getting the hang of him as well
@@BrendanMushi plz lol
Hit the ball out of the park man! I tried picking up zato over the past two weeks and I went through all five stages of zato grief: "help I'm getting schmixed", "my buttons sux", "my mixups have holes, what buttons do I even hold", "wtf gio's + on everything", "how is gobou so crazy good?"
Keep the content coming man, we love and appreciate the effort you're putting in. 👍 Not sure if you'd be comfortable reccomending zato players to keep an eye on, but I think there are definitely some people out there with saucey gameplay (Knowkami, Mark_FGC, Dogura, Gobou, just to name a few) to watch!
I've been watching some ogawa games he is 'THE zato' as i understand, watching Brendan's games and match analyses have also been helpful for me
Zato is SSS tier for the most fun character to play and lab. Also, switching in and out of claw gripping is the key to Pad Zatos!
Filthy Ram player here: huge respect for Zatos, honestly. The sickest combos in the game bar-none. Ram's my favorite character design, and I wanted to play her in strive ever since I started playing her in XRD, but even then I considered maining Zato. Keep it up to any new zatos out there. Stick to it and you can fuck shit up too.
lmao throwing shade at Giovanna. I love it.
As a zato main this is much appreciated
Just what I was looking for, thanks!
Also, the best bit of unspoken advice in this video: playing white color Zato on the snow stage, lol
This man just delivers
I know I comment a lot, but damn, I love it when you roast other characters in your analysis
lmao I always appreciate the regulars for commenting. Seriously, it's really dope. I'm glad people don't take that too seriously, but I literally roast everyone that doesn't play my character in every game.
@@BrendanMushi as one should LMAO
People who wanted to play Zato, Bridget and Menat knows what they are getting into, and it's important to know that, you will lose, a lot, like, a lot, Like 7 wins 400 loses
Love the guide man(Love how you threw shade at nearly every character)
he shade
I hella appreciate the shout-out man! Pad Zato is def more then possible as long as you practice and keep at it!
You been leading the charge for the Zato mains through the struggle for such a long time. It actually means a lot to see you commenting here bro haha
But how do you do it? Do you claw grip?
@@BrendanMushi Much love to you bro and keep up the great content! Always love to see more GG/zato stuff out there!

And thz for the layout on pad very much appreciated it's good to a fellow black zato main other knowkami
Congrats on an amazing video. So real!
another sick guide. nice video dude
Thanks a ton, I'm new to gg and find zato interesting.

TEKKEN 7 OST - Jungle Outpost 2 (Moment of Impact)
Thank you so much for this, cuz ive been playing zato but ive sort been switching to other characters like nago and pot, i'll have to mess with zato more with these combos you're showing
thank u sir
i'm learning Zato in the past few days and he is so fun, also, learning him while learning how to play on a arcade stick feels pretty satisfying
I main Zato on Ps4 Pad it is a struggle right because of negative edging but I remapped my buttons to the following
Circle/4/or Heavy Slash To R2/Back right trigger
X/3/or slash to L2/Back Left Trigger
Another dope video. Easy to forget to focus more on improvement and not winning in these games. Especially when you want to be competitive
Hang on every word, thx for the vid m8
"Learn from some better zato players"

This is extremely useful for me especially since I recently picked up ggst as my first 2d fighter (I played tekken but it just doesn't translate well) and was super interested in zato. I find negative edge really difficult right now but I'm playing on default pad. I find using setplays and learning certain combos and mixups suplement the lack of technical skill I haven't built up yet pretty well overall I love this character very unique very dynamic kinda wish he wasn't nerfed so hard lol.
I see my comment there. This was insightful
Thanks for inspiring the video to get created lol
These guides have been really helpful . I need to learn him! I view negative edge as this. Press button= Zato attacks/ release same button : Eddie attacks.
Don't want Eddie to attack just yet? Hold the button(s) down after you use it to make Zato attack or hold it during a move so it's on the ready .
Button goes down =Zato
Button goes up= Eddie
Right?
That is right
As someone who just started guilty gear strive (and fighting games in general) and is maiming ram- you’re completely right, she’s so easy to play lmao. I could’ve stuck with her but zato looked sick. It sucks geyting steamrolled but he’s still fun and i know practice will pay off eventually
My man used the word "Troglodyte", i'm subbing just for your use of vocabulary and not sticking to "OD, Brain dead, etc".
Thank you.
trog·lo·dyte
/ˈträɡləˌdīt/
noun
(especially in prehistoric times) a person who lived in a cave.
a hermit.
a person who is regarded as being deliberately ignorant or old-fashioned.
Troglodyte Gio main reporting for duty!
im learning this game with zato, i suck; but i love it XD and that the important
I don't understand what combos require negative edge. You can definitely do damage without negative edge and you can do a ton of damage easily in this game.
If you want to perform blockstrings with eddie out and you use Invite Hell, you'll often use Oppose by mistake because you're releasing HS after Invite Hell. That's just one example of negative edge being very useful.
Technically any time you make Eddie do an attack outside of doing quarter circle forward + an attack button you are using "negative edge". The difficulty comes when you want Zato to do a series of attacks then have Eddie attack then have Zato do another series of attacks then have Eddie attack again without accidentally making Eddie attack at the exact same time Zato attacks or without Eddie doing the wrong move.
Doing this requires you to press and hold Zato's buttons and release the specific button you want Eddie to do without releasing the other held buttons when Zato has finished his series of attacks. Once Eddie has begun attacking you can release the other buttons and then start attacking as Zato when Eddie is done and just repeat this.
@@BrendanMushi is there some sort of rythm to their attacks?
Not really, it’s pretty intuitive. It’s just do a string with Zato then when you see visually on screen Zato is done, command Eddie to attack, once you visually see Eddie is done attacking start attacking as Zato.
Great fucking content man!
in 5:46, is 214s pierce 5P pierce2 5K a true blockstring? I keep getting hit by dp during 5k. I know it counter hits vs non invul moves if you're really tight but can you not worry about the dp or the super if you do it properly?
I don't even play Zato and this is still interesting.
negative edging feels like driving on the wrong side of the street. It's so hard to fight the instinct to release a button
i have punch on l1, kick on r1 and slash and heavy slash on their normal buttons (triangle and circle). Its kinda weird but it lets me press and hold any combination of the 4 attacks. I just have to use my thumb tip for triangle and thumb knuckle for circle (if that makes any sense lol)
Yeah I do the same but changed S and HS to L1 and R1, instead of Kick and Punch, and it works really well
For a second I thought the song was Ram Ranch
I’ve been playing Zato for abt a week and a half now but idk how to lab Zato. What exactly do I practice?
How common are situations where you have to keep pressed buttons like P or K while pressing HS for example?
I'm aking because on the PS controller I can easily do combos that require holding S(triangle) and HS(O) but I can't imagine holding square while having to press O, know what I mean?
Thanks a lot for the video man!
Not as common as holding S & H which will be the most common, but really all combinations of holds are useable. I would recommend finding a way to make holding P or K while pressing HS possible for you because you ideally want to be able to do everything any other Zato can do, but if you're a beginner that button combination isn't quite as common, but as you become better you'll likely find situations where you may need it.
Hey Brendan, do u use a pad, or a stick? If stick, which one? And I was thinking of getting a Hitbox to master Zato, would you recommend that? (Currently using the PS4 controller)
I use a stick, specifically the Qanba Crystal. I love it and yeah I recommend ppl just buy a hitbox
The reason I don't use stick is because I like a mechanical dpad I don't use stick
Try hit box
The minute I saw Zato in strive and heard his theme, I was in love. I’m gonna put in every minute I need in the dojo to become a threat, but I do have one question. I’ve been playing fighting games with a controller for a year or so now, but I’d really like to get a fightstick . Do you have any recommendations?
I use the Qanba crystal, they have my favorite line of fight sticks. Most of their stuff is $200+, but that one is $150. The sticks cheaper than that in my experience tend to be small or just feel weird to me. I also would recommend the HORI Real Arcade Pro 4 Kai, I think that and the Qanba crystal are my top two recommendations for your first fight stick, has quality buttons, decent price, and all the standard features you need. Anything above that price point probably has a bunch of bells and whistles you don't really need.
I bought two very cheap, like $30-$70 dollar sticks in Japan and they were bad. The buttons on one was really uncomfortable to press and on the other stick the diagonals where really hard to hit (quarter-circles weren't quarter-circles but 90° angles >_>)
I'd like to shout out Hitbox though!
I've never been comfortable with sticks and Hitbox made it really much more enjoyable for me!
I don't know about compatibility with PS5 as the controller is marketed as PS4/PC.
The biggest negative is that you cannot play as well in arcades and that some tournaments might not let you play on it.
I'm one of those filthy claw grip ps4 pad players (using pad like a stick) cuz I'm so used to playing that way from tekken, but I still find it hard to hold 4 buttons at once, could you tell me how important it is to negative edge ALL the four attack buttons for Zato at higher levels? like how often do you do it yourself? I just have HS mapped to l1 and I can get by with holding 2 buttons at once and pressing other stuff easily, even 3 seems doable with practice, but 4 seems too hard even for a claw player like me and I would have to do map the buttons to the triggers like you said. I just want to know this so I can start practicing with the right layout from the start, don't want to switch buttons around mid way through once I get better. Thanks. (and yes I have thought about getting a stick, and they are way to expensive in my country cuz of the import tax, haha)
The best thing you can do is following top level players, like Gobou, and then watching replays. You can see their inputs on their combos. Regarding your question, as far as I can remember, Gobou doesn't ever need to hold more than 2 buttons at once, so I don't think holding 4 is actually ever done, or necessary.
2:29 why did you do us dirty man D:
Bros here askin’ if they can play Zato with the pad and here I am playing with a keyboard
Where’s the zato combo guide video you have playing in the background? I can’t find it on your channel
lol it doesn't exist, the combos in the video were made for this video specifically
@@BrendanMushi ah I figured lol, do you think it could get a separate upload eventually? I’m new to fgc and sound ques help me learn combos
Do you or know anyone that has a negative edge guide for zato. I’ll get used to it but I’m just trying to get started. It was be helpful if their was a negative edge guide for zato.
“How to Zato” by Norvril has some additional negative edge tips that this video doesn’t
found some zato meme's online.. banger ost btw, bought the game 2 days ago and didnt touch a single other character and ive just been playing zato for the last 2 days.
obviously i suck ass online, but its those rounds where you halve thier hp in 10 seconds or so that make up for it even tho i lost every other round before that.
this is the first fighting game ive ever played and im using keyboard, i like the direct imputs, using wasd for movement and numpad for attacks idk if thats a good setup but i shure aint using a mf playstation controler again.
anyway im having a blast w ggst yall got any tips for a new Zato 1 player ?
As somebody who plays zato on pad I can tell you that having fat fingers is a blessing xD
But for "break the law" mixup I still need to claw :/
Hey there, I've been practicing negative edge as a concept (simple stuff like holding hs to stop the wall) but am struggling to find places with notated combos/block strings for him in strive, do u have any recommendations of where i could find a good source as dustloop is p empty atm which is where i have gone in the past.
None that I know of, but I do have input display and virtual stick display turned on for this vid. I know it’s not perfect, but you could try putting vid into slow mo and watching the virtual stick to see specifically how I input more complicated negative edge strings.
Twitter my man, #GGST_ZA has tech for days. A good account to follow there would be @Mark_FGC, his stuff isnt fully notated but he has inputs on on his vids and you can learn tech from there 👍
@@BrendanMushi ill give that a go, thanks for being such a blessing to both the zato and guilty gear community, hope some more notated stuff comes out soon (or that the combo sharer works well).
@@b3rni362 i knew about the twitter thing but no notation usually, ill give that account a look, thanks man

Does any of Zatos BnB combos require holding 3 buttons down at once? As a pad player this is pretty much the only thing that intimidates me about this character. And i sure as hell ain't doing that freak ass back button setup and relearn all my muscle memory.
For the most part, no. Most of the time you need to be able to hold 2 buttons and press a 3rd. There are instances of holding 3 buttons but it isn’t as common as the 2 button holds.
Hey man, great video. I'd like to preface my request by saying I've never touched a GG game in my life, but I'm trying to buy STRIVE when I get some cash. I'm new to your channel so don't chastise me on my lack of knowledge of it, but I was wondering if you would be willing to make a video commentating on a good Zato-1 match, as well as a bad Zato-1 match. Cheers brother, amazing videos.
Yeah, I can do that. Thanks for watching/commenting!
@@BrendanMushi Wow you actually replied! That's so awesome! I'm looking forward to it man. Zato-1 seems like such an interesting and unique character. I'm used to playing characters like Yoshimitsu from Tekken and F.A.N.G./Dhalsim from SF5. Can't wait to buy STRIVE and pick up Zato-1. Thanks for making awesome content!
@@BrendanMushi there are not enough pro match analysis' imo
@@sleepfgc I can do some more for sure
Does strive happen to have character specific challenges ? I heard they were doing something like this and it got me excited to buy the game .
Not really, so like there’s mission mode which is really cool. It’s a series of training drills that teach your the mechanics of the game and there are some that teach you how to counter certain moves other characters have, but no combo trials or anything
@@BrendanMushi i feel that but they really need a character specific challenge mode to sell me on the game . Sometimes having to go on CZcams and look up all the basic target combos etc can be a pain in the butt . Its satisfying to have a trials mode to be able to get the gist of a character . I might wait and see if they add something like that I really hope they do .
@@BrendanMushi There are a couple of Character specific combos on Mission mode, but it's by no means as extensive as Xrd Rev 2.
Zato is hard, but there’s nothing more satisfying for me than getting a perfect sandwich combo going.
Ive kinda hit a wall with Zato, I learned too much too quick and now when I play my fingers get tied in knots. Also found myself getting frustrated with his flaws alot, wishing I had some miracle button I could press to get out of a bad situation. But honestly, having shit buttons is a fair price to pay for what we can do once we get going.
I recommend fighting the CPU to develop a consistent gameplan. I do this a lot because it takes the frustration away from messing up a setup since it's just a CPU and not some sweaty Sol player that's going to punish you harshly for this mistake and think he's a beast for it. I actually go to training mode and change the settings to simulate a real match and I change the dummy to a CPU, this way I can hit the reset button to restart the match and I'll play the CPU with the intention of trying to practice getting off certain setups or combos in a real match then once I feel I can do it consistently against the CPU then I go online.
5:58 13 second combo.
honestly i really don't think he's that hard to play. As someone who's completely new to GG , i've been playing for maybe a week and zato is the only character i learned and i'm already floor 9 playing some really tight games. With all the resources put out by people who actually know the game and the characters (thanks brendan :)) it's pretty easy to pick up imo. Also Eddie is the boy you need in your life.
White Zato on the snow stage... ok
Gio is a walking plus frame
“Just buy a fight stick it isn’t that expensive”
My brother in Christ they’re like 100-300$
I'ma just get a stick
100 hours in and still struggling at floor 7., and yet i still get rekt by people that use the same string all the time and this is getting a bit discouraging, and since i started caring about N.edge i started to do a lot worse. he's the only character i want to play (unless they decide to add testament back in). Using a controller with the default setup (I spent a lot of time with R1/R2 for attacks, but i find it absolutely horrible), for whatever reason i don't like playing this game with a stick (would be fine if it was a 4 button fighter, or if i could map the dust to 2 button (like CD from kof)
I would recommend checking out Beautiful Dude’s Twitch. He plays Zato on default settings and he teaches new players a lot. Pop into a stream of his and ask him how he does it because I don’t know his technique.
I actually did used to play Zato on pad via default settings way back when Xrd first dropped. I used to claw the controller, so my thumb and pointer finger were on the face buttons with my middle finger on the triggers.
Damn, struggling on floor 7, 100 hours, only cares about Zato unless Testament shows up, suddenly doing worse by trying N. edge setups. Are you my double?
I'd say everyone should play Zato but I don't really like Zato mirrors >.> .
I genuinely find nagoriyuki a lot harder to play than zato
