- I thought it was time to upload this in better quality.
Mark Knopfler performing a great version of "Money for Nothing" during "Music for Montserrat", live from Royal Albert Hall, London - 15 September 1997.
Mark Knopfler - vocals, guitar
Eric Clapton - guitar
Sting - backing vocals
Guy Fletcher - keyboards
Phil Palmer - guitar
Phil Collins - drums
Ray Cooper - percussion
On the evening of September 15, 1997, legendary British music producer George Martin (who had risen to prominence with the Beatles) held a benefit concert at London's Royal Albert Hall for the small Caribbean island of Montserrat, which had recently been devastated by a volcanic eruption. All of the invited superstars had recorded some of their biggest hits at Montserrat's Air Studios, which Martin had founded in 1970, and this shared history gives Music for Montserrat an added sense of enjoyment among friends. Despite a few vocal dropouts and forgivable mixing problems, this outstanding concert has been captured with impressive fidelity, and while each artist performs songs appropriate to the occasion, they share the stage (along with a house band, choir, and orchestra conducted by Martin) in brilliant combinations that bring out the best in everyone involved.
The show hits full stride with Mark Knopfler's exquisite "Brothers in Arms," which segues nicely into "Money for Nothing" with guest vocals by Sting, who then performs two hits from his Police years. And while Elton John and Eric Clapton form the centerpiece of the concert (especially Clapton and Knopfler's acoustic "Layla"), by which time Music for Montserrat had given its royal audience a show they would never forget.
Enjoy! - Hudba
Money for nothing
Mark Knopfler - Lead Guitar/Lead Vocals
Eric Clapton - Rhythm Guitar/Lead Guitar
Phil Collins - Drums
Sting - Backing Vocals.
THIS IS HEAVEN
I love how you dont mention the bassist
STRATMAN firdaus Ray Cooper-percussions
You mean "tears in heaven"? :-)))
John Isley - Bass
What about the tambourine player??
You know you're doing ok when Clapton is playing rhythm for you!!!
Yeah, he got a day time job, he's doing alright
And sting singing backing vocals!
You know you're doing OK when Knopfler is playing rhythm for you, as he did on Clapton's 25th Anniversary Tour. 🙂
@@sabyasachi9184 it’s a shame your comment went so under appreciated.
@@jaygriffn.m.b.ssk8743 hehe...
It might be because, it ain't what they call rock n roll
Mark Knopfler, Sting, Eric Clapton and Phil Collins and there are dislikes. Are you people of sound mind and body?
Just some attention seekers. These guys together..just no words..greatness!
@@justinm3376 Or just people who enjoy different arts and entertainment than you do. Were you raised poorly enough to think that's not ok?
Besides, what "attention" could one be seeking by disliking a video? There's literally no way to even identify who disliked it! What the hell are you even talking about?!?!?!
Dave Carsley sorry. I don’t respond to dicks. You’re a dick. Ergo, I don’t justify my response to you.
Most of them probably don't even know who they are looking at!
Dave does have a point some people just dont like rock, which they do have the option of opinion.
That backup guitar player could have his own band
Yeah, that boy has talent
Just a little
He is looking beautiful tonight
He could change the world
@@1234yaic ...you mean "wonderfull"...but, where is Layla..?
Mark Knopfler - if Phill Collins play for You, if Eric Clapton play for You, if Sting singin for You - You should know one thing - You are a Music God.
I think they were playing with him, not for him
They’re brothers in arm
just proper musicians - not pop stars
Best comment!!!!!!!!!
@@dadojackson Absolutely. Shame Mark "forgot" to introduce Phil on drums.
You know you are in God Tier when Clapton is Your Rhythm Guitarist and Sting is Backing Vocals
with phil collins on drums too
So glad Sting was there. I couldn't hear Mark singing clearly. Sounded mumbled
@@Cynsham Finally, someone else acknowledges Phil - shame Mark forgot to.
🤣😃🎉
It has nothing to do with the fact that they're all British...🤔
Holy crap, Clapton is one of the best guitarists ever and he’s playing rhythm for knopfler. Just shows you the respect knopfler gets.
Knopfler is also one of the best guitarists Clapton may be better, but still.
They are just fantastic!
And both of them look like amateurs compared to Paco de Lucia.
@@YonnyMestampo or lil wayne
I’ll take Mark over Clapton
That drummer has talent... with a little hard work, he'll be somebody someday.
He won't get much taller although I've heard he's quite into his early religion, verses from Genesis or something?
Now facing his Revelations 😞
Somebody like Phil Collins for example, hahahaha, nice going mate! Too much quality on the scenario: the killer four.
I think he plays bass in rush or something
+++
Don't think so.
Cause I know = This drummer ( Phil ) SERIOUSLY C'AN ' T DANCE !
******
Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins ..... can it get any better, no it can't.
+Tom Edwards Paul McCartney and Elton John in hey jude masks it much better
I' m sure someone else has noticed this three of those mentioned have played in the most acclaimed power trios in British rock indeed rock period !! enjoy the night and the amazing music !!
This is a history!
Traveling Wilburys. Dylan, Harrison, Petty, Orbison, and the ELO frontman. (forgot his name 😕) That’s peak talent in a group right there.
BB King Chuck berry and John Lee maybe?
So dear children of today.... This is how music is made 💪👍🤘
They can’t They copy today
Amen
I know many people think that Clapton is the superior guitarist, but Knopfler gets my vote.
The most avarage looking rockstars you could imagine
Their music speaks for itself.
I was thinkin' that these old guys got the whole place on their feet and rockin' out 😁
I mean these guys are in their mid 40s here
@@joshr920 Nahh, Mark was 50 at the time of this concert i believe, as he was born in '47 if my memory serves me right
Nvm, Mark is born in '49, so he is 48 here
Four of the greatest musicians to walk and rock the Earth on one stage.
Damn, perfection!
you forgot Ray Cooper... he is pretty much a legend as much as these guys...
All that’s missing is Hendrix. But unfortunately we will never see such a feat
Just the amount of star power on stage....damnnnnnnn....
I love that Clapton dresses like a Sr Dev showing up for work at Microsoft
Mark Knopfler
, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins
They are like british avengers
After 36 years, this poor guy still doesn't have his MTV. I am very sad for him...
MTV is shit, they'll never accept him now
To be fair, todays MTV is atrocious so he’s probably better off not having it 😉
@@hislatestflame7861 you are right 😁
I watched this over and over and over again... I'm 65 years old and my heart still beats while listening... Thanks heroes...
I’m 75 & I’m with ya!!
77 and a first time listener to four of the five!
It's a miracle the stage didn't collapse from all those heavyweight legends performing on it!
I have never seen a group of musicians who look anything more like a group of dads living their youth dreams than these guys together
Who else has had Eric Clapton playing rhythm guitar and Sting singing accompanying vocals for them?
And Phil Collins playing drums
Four rock legends and each one is so humble that’s why their so love by everyone
This is too freaking good! Clapton once said that Mark was the Best guitarist he'd ever been around. Super High Praise!
You should see him play with Chet Atkins...amazing!
until john mayer came to town!
Let's not forget Prince.
The one and only Jeff Beck is that man
Knopfler, Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins... I could’ve paid 1000 bucks my ticket for this
Me too!!!
Probably it was
Easily...
That's why we are the best 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧😂😂😂😂🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
@@northernowl7087 No need to rub it in our faces mate, lol. You have the Beatles, you won a long, long time ago
Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins, Sting. This is more than a superband. This is probably the best meeting of talented people in history.
Except we also have the Travelling Wilburys - Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne, George Harrison, Tom Petty and the drummer Jim Keltner (who may not be Phil Collins but he's still a pretty awesome drummer). Truth is, the only thing I don't mind about being old is that I grew up with this music. xxx
The last song of Blues Brothers 2000 holds that title, but this is on the list.
I don't think anyone can appreciate how Knofler has impacted the world of guitar. He created his own sound by playing fingerstyle - which is particularly difficult on electric guitar, creating so much sound, very unique. Chet Atkins and Merle Travis also fingerpicked - but used their thumb to create primary a bass line to their fingers - Knofler claws, sometimes playing bass line with his thumb - sometime not. He's so good, so unique - he makes it look easy. He's a true pioneer and probably won't be emulated for a very long time.
F yessss.. my favorite guitarist!
He and Lindsay Buckingham are the two best fingerstyle guitarists
All those stars on stage - not forgetting the supreme percussionist, Ray Cooper...
The best percussionist ive seen...
Love that guy
And Guy Fletcher on keyboards and vocals too!!!
And the best thing about this performance is…Mark Knopfler smiling!
Mark knopler has to be the top 5 guitar players of all time...he plays rock music as good as he plays calm love songs. The dude can literally play any genre of music as long as it has a guitar
Idk man, it’s largely opinion but he’s probably in the top 10.
Clapton, Mayer, BB King, Hendrix.. the list goes on and on it’s really hard to pick a top 5 let alone top 10.
You misunderstood AP.
Brady said Mark IS the top 5 guitars. Not one of the top 5. And I agree with him.
Have to put one of my favourites in the 5 ..dave gilmour
Finally, the one thing this song has been missing--A KICKASS SOLO.
Love how Phil Collins managed to take the most simple drums and make it absolutely amazing! And he just looks like he isn't even thinking about it XD
seems to be the go to drummer they ring when they need someone who can deliver
@@deborahallan3720 Don't say that to Jimmy Page or Robert Plant lol
@@ianpegge9967 Well, he played with Robert Plant and is buddy. Actually Zeppelin did exactly the contrary to what Queen did for that particular event you refer to. They were high and unprepared. Collins never failed playing.
Probably because he’s not. This song is insanely simple for him. He was the drummer for genesis and created things like los endos and firth the fifth. This would be a simple exercise for him
@@ianpegge9967 Jimmy Page was strung out of his mind that time, it definitely wasn't Phil's fault that it was such an unmitigated disaster. Plus, Phil and Robert are still good friends even to this day.
they've never needed fake feathers, fogg, tons of light, extraordinary makeup. Looks like some avarage Joe, but there are MASTERS
I’ve always thought Mark Knopfler looked really cool with that headband but it might have just been me 😂❤️
There's not too many people out there who can make Eric Clapton play rhythm. There are even fewer who can make him love it!
Maybe I’m completely wrong, but it seems like Mark really tried to impress with his vocals more than usual. He knows he’s around other greats and I think he stepped it up just a tad.
He is a great
Its weird! I thought the same thing, but about Sting, i might be wrong of course, but i feel he sang some parts i little Higher than they needed to.. Killer performance nonetheless c:
3:30 Sting's face '"damn this guy can rap"
Ahhaha
In the song he says the word faggot a couple of times but he changed it for this performance… That was probably sting looking at him wondering if he’s gonna say it or not, but he didn’t . He change it to Maggot and mother trucker!! I noticed that too LOL
@@travissalter4087 Mark hasn't sung the original lyric since shortly after the song was released when he learned how offensive it was to some people. He throws in different alternatives instead. Another is 'queenie'.
@@travissalter4087hahaha I was saying the same thing , sting has the “oh no don’t you say it face ..!! “
Back when Phil Collins was still able to play the drums...
Sad to see, but damned if he wasn't effing amazing before his health went south.
Don´t forget the percusonist Ray Cooper (the one with sun glasses ;) )... one of the greatest !!!
He seems to be the Paul Schafer of the UK.
Ray Cooper is the main man here
Yesssss I saw him in 1991, Sevilla, Spain
Magnificent
yes , he is feeling it all!
What a musical orgasm! Sting's voice is tremendous as ever, Clapton is a silent killer with that guitar, Collins leads the rhythms with talent and Knofler plays a great frontman in here!
It’s called an eargasm
All my idols from 80's on one stage jamming. I'm gonna cry now... 😢
So do I....
They are legend
80s music is better than today’s music.
The rare example of meeting insanely high expectations
2:24 he's like ''damn this sounds good!''
Clapton on rhythm guitar and Sting on back up vocals, that's when you know your work was appreciated!
This came from the day when MTV was music television ... good music and not the garbage that it is now.
My son is 10 and he mentioned Video Killed The Radio Star...I mentioned when MTV played videos to the music...sigh
@@amyjones8791 Really sad, isn't it? I feel sorry for the kids of today. They don't know what good music is. The garbage they get now is awful and destructive.
I'm dead. This is as good as it gets for an 80's music aficionado.
I fully agree! Magical! Wish I was there live
This is the definition of a super group
Eric’s solo just hits different. His sound check must be hell to mix.
Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Sting, Phil Collins... Oh, the man who always steals the show, Ray Cooper. Percussionist extraordinaire.
Music these days is finished.
That singer is criminally good! Just hope that the police will not pick him up.
I'm not a big Clapton fan but I respect his existence and immense talent, what a lineup! Beyond a super band
I’ve watched this video many many times. It never gets old. The talent is assembled on that stage is mind blowing. But the thing I love the most is that woman in the choir at 4:40. She’s sees the camera and her face lights up with joy. You know she’s thinking to herself: “OK, I can die now”
A lot of truth😂❤️
🤣🤣
My only regret not getting to see Mark knopfler live at red rocks when he was there last.
Have to cherish rock legends performing a song that mercilessly mocks their own musical genius. ❤
this song is sooooo badass mark knopfler best guitar player eva
Oh i'd say Clapton & knopfler are both in a league of their own now.... Sheer class :)
I don’t know about the best ever. Maybe in their genre.
@@20TheGame09 Clapton's genre is blues. Good luck defining Knopfler's; rock, blues, country, classical, folk he can do it all.
Mark, Eric, Sting and Phil on drums 👌🏻

phil collins was such a f***g good drummer, always a pleasure watching him playing drums
Instead of forming one band, each have form his ! And the winner is... Music !
So how many legends do you want on stage?
Yes.

Clapton and Collins always dressing like they’re ready for of evening of staying home. Love it!
Never knew this video existed and just accidentally stumbled across it. Simply amazing …. And no modern production methods such as auto tone needed.
Mark said: " shoulda learned to play the guitar";
You don't have to learn, you have a lot to teach for many guitarrists, you're the best one!!!
And the fabulous Ray Cooper on Percussion !!
sting has kick ass attitude
Whould've been even greater if he was also on the bass... But damn, with being in the vocals is enough!
Sting is sooo hot here.
This is the 80's in a single band.
What a treat to see Slowhand and Knopfler together...two of the absolute best. And Phil on drums...with Sting on vocals!
WHOA! I just got a piss shiver....😁
Mark Knopfler is such a underrated guitarist! You know you are legend when you play with Chet Atkins (poor boy blues) Mark is the man ♥️

Some of the biggest rock legends on one stage
Phil Collins back on the drums killin it! Nice !!
These guys, their era, no ego just love for the fucking music. Won’t have anything like this with todays current artist.
All these 4 legends were also in Live Aid ‘85 for a benefit concert.

Think about how many members of so many bands are being united on stage for one night. Cream, Blind Faith, Dire Straits, Genesis, the Police - all on one stage.
I wonder if the guy in the electronics store, that Mark overheard talking about rock stars, ever realized the song was written from his words. :)
I read that he did.
Legongs, all! Oh, the 80's so rocked!
Wow Eric Clapton and Phil Collins
They're simply too good! What a great bunch. And yes, it is Ray Cooper on Tambourine. He plays with the best, and is wonderful to watch.
The only difference here differ from other musicians, is that these instruments obey their masters here, not other way around! the living legends are in charge! #MarkKnopfler, #Sting, #Eric Clapton and #Phil Collins
