Vulkan was one of the 20 superhuman primarchs and a Perpetual created by the Emperor of Mankind from altered versions of His own DNA to lead his Great Crusade and reunite the scattered peoples of Humanity within the Imperium of Man.
The XVIIIth Legion, created from Vulkan's genome and originally known as the Dragon Warriors, was re-named the Salamanders after the great fire-resistant reptiles native to his volcanic homeworld of Nocturne in memory of the legendary contest between the Emperor and Vulkan that had involved slaying one of those dangerous beasts. The outcome of this contest had revealed the Emperor's identity to Vulkan and restored the Primarch to the Imperium.
Approximately a thousand standard years after the Horus Heresy, Vulkan hid 9 sacred artefacts he had created around the galaxy for the Salamanders to find, intended as a test to see if they were worthy of his leadership.
He then disappeared, leaving his genetic sons with the message that whenever the Forgefather of the Salamanders had found all nine items, Vulkan would return to lead his Chapter to victory over the enemies of the Imperium in its final days of greatest need, according to the signs foreseen in the Chapter's book of prophecy, the Tome of Fire.

@@berilsevvalbekret772 "wasn'tthere very innocent people left on that planet??"
I assume you mean "weren't there very few," and I would say that almost everyone on Caldera was innocent. The worst "crime" (which was not a crime by their planet's laws, and their planet was not a subject of any empire existing during the Great Crusade, so cannot be subjected to the laws of any empire) the people of Caldera committed was invite Craftworld Eldar stay on their planet after that Craftworld saved them from the Dark Eldar. This is a very reasonable and polite thing to do; how rude would it be, if, an army had come to enslave, torture, rape, and murder you, then another army had defeated that army, asking nothing in return, but kick the second army out, rather than trying to learn more about them and why they helped a bunch of strangers? Why would these bunch of Feral Worlders even know the significance of the Imperium's policies towards the Eldar? They've had no contact with anyone outside of their planet since Old Night besides the Eldar.
I don't know exactly why the Eldar helped, this was a Feral World completely independent of the several human empires operating at the time, not exactly of strategic importance to anyone. Perhaps there were a high number of shamans on the planet and the Eldar thought that they could teach the shamans the proper ways to use the Warp without risking a Chaos incursion. Maybe this particular Craftworld just hated the Dark Eldar, and after the humans of what is now called Caldera extended the invitation, they stayed.
"Still compared to other spave marines salamenders do their best to save as many innocents as they can. That deserves respect."
Of course, I agree. IIRC, the Raven Guard (most sons of Vulcan and Corax) also do their best to minimize civilian casualties. And let us not forget the Lamenters.

Fulgrim's world of Chemos was a borderline death world. It was a world perpetually covered in dust storms and night, where the population had next to no resources to sustain itself and had to work 24 hours a day just to barely survive. They had to work so much that they didn't have any down-time, so no recreation or culture or leisure, just work. They were all crammed into tech-fortresses because being outside with no protection was a great way of getting flayed alive by the dust storms. Of course, cramming the whole population of a world into a handful of fortresses meant living conditions weren't exactly great. They couldn't produce any food of their own so were entirely dependent on trade for food, which wasn't a common occurrence since Chemos was parked right next to a bunch of raging warp storms and the Chemosians had barely any resources to trade with anyways, effectively condemning the inhabitants to slow starvation and martial law to ration whatever crumbs of food they had and to maintain the work load required just for the planet to not collapse on itself. "Not great" is the understatement of the century when it comes to Chemos.

A segment from The Horus Heresy - Sons of the Forge by Nick Kyme
Sons of Horus are regrouping and resupplying after a recent skirmish with a Salamander patrol
Rayko Solomus had left the pit and was sitting on a ammo crate looking out of the battlements of the north wall. He saw the city ruins on the decaying horizon and found himself unmoved. As he only half-heard the menials toiling below and behind him Solomus wondered how long he has been this way.. dead inside. The rifted feeling, only when he held the torturer's knife, did a moat of true emotion return... and even that had been denied to him. The mechanicum emissary had the drake now.
"He did not scream?" asked Nevok. Stopping to regard Solomus as he loaded a fresh shell into his weapons clip.
"Hmm they certainly can take pain"
Nevok stood sentry, waiting for the Salamanders to come. Sons of Horus stood at arms now, bolters at the ready, a squad of heavy weapons with their sights trained on the skies. Their subterfuge, no longer any use to them. They would fight the Salamanders in open battle. They were bloodied though, a row of dead lay in a makeshift apothecarian, waiting for rank to remove their prodgynoids. Even the survivors had burned and scorched armor.
S: "They are born into it..." said Solomus. "..unto fire and death"
N: Nevok nodded as he slipped in another bolt shell. "Have you seen their bodies? His scars had scars.."
S: Solomus drew his knife, admiring the sharpness of the blade. "He killed Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.." he said, counting the legionaries one at the time on his gauntleted fingers. " ..at the same time. He fought them, three against one!"
N: Nevok laughed as he slammed his clip back into his boltgun. "I seriously doubt that! The Drake was a fighter, anyone who is legion could see that, BUT ALL THREE?"
He shook his head and scoffed. "Ezremas alone would have gutted him! These drakes are warm blooded, but they are not like us. They're weak!"
VK: "He did it!" said a voice from behind them. Vosto Kurnan made his way onto the battlements via a metal stair that creaked under his armored weight. "I saw him" he added matter of factly, coming to stand beside the other legionaries.
N: "Then why did you not intervene?!" said Nevok.
VK: "They done themselves enough dishonor without my defeat of the drake making it worse." he said.. "..besides I hated Hajuk, Morvek and Ezremas.."
N: "You hate everyone brother captain.."
VK: "Hmph, true.." Kurnan said lightly and looked descant at Nevok. "But I reserve a special hatred for some. And they aren't weak..." he added. "You never served on Istvan V. You never saw them fight."
N: Nevok looked at them both, nonplussed.. "What!? That was butchery, not service!"
VK: Kurnan drew close. Nevok had his bolter by his side and fully loaded "We HAD them brother... The Ravens were abroad, guerilla fighting even then. The Gorgon and his warriors.. well they were hellbent on Fulgrim. But we had the drakes, surrounded, outnumbered, at the mercy of the high ground and our entrenched artillery. You should have seen the Iron Warriors pummel them.." he shook his head as if remembering the events he was describing in vivid detail. "Any other foe would have died and died fast, and they did..." he said. His voice grew low and menacing "But those drakes refused to yield. They fought even as the bombs rained and their brethren fell in droves. Even when the Gorgon died and when the Lord of Drakes fell soon after.. and when the raven fled they kept on... ..and on. Some had lost limbs, others were impaled or blind. Wounded beyond any reasonable capacity to function... ..even for legionaries..." Kurnan backed off, but his eyes still burned into Nevok's through his retinal lenses. "I heard it said that, ..when you kill one of Guilliman's sons, you make sure he is dead. Vulcan's sons... ..well they just don't die at all..."

Vulkan is the true hero who will bring friendship to all humans and fiery death to all fetish dungeon space elves.
Nocturne would be a lovely place to live if it wasn't always on fire, still great neighbors who genuinely care about each other.

    List of primarch Death Worlds;
Baal (Sanguinius); Arid radioactive desert full of feral mutants that makes Pandora from Borderlands look like a nice friendly neighborhood, with 2 moons that are even worse somehow.
Caliban (the Lion); Forest planet with vegetation so thick and which grows so quickly it literally stops any permanent settlement from being built without constant attempts to cut it back. The forests hide horrific Chaos taint and mutant monsters attack on the regular.
Fenris (Russ); Constant shifting archipelagos world where entire islands sink and erupt out of the ocean basically overnight. Has only 2 seasons that last years; sub-siberian winter and hotter-than-hell summer. The seas also have giant monsters in them.
Nocturne (Vulkan); Volcano world! You want fire? WE HAVE ALL THE FIRE! Makes summer time on Fenris seems pleasant. Also has dragons, because of course it does!
Surprisingly, Barbarus (Mortarion) and Chemos (Fulgrim) are not considered Deathworlds. Barbarus is considered Feral, despite being a toxic shit-pool where hardly anything grows and the air somehow gets more poisonous the higher the altitude and there's barely any daylight ever, and Chemos is considered a Mining world, albeit one that also doesn't get any sunlight and which also has jack shit of basically anything else, including water and everything has to be recycled constantly to sustain the population, who spend every waking moment doing so.
Medusa (Ferrus) is also considered Feral, and is kinda a knock-off/wannabe Fenris/Nocturne, but nowhere near as bad as either of them, and if you want somewhere cold enough to give Fenris' winters a run for their money, then check out the Ice world of Inwit (Dorn), which is literally just a giant chunk of fucking frozen ass ice. There's literally nothing more to say on that, it's just cold as shit there.
So yeah, surprisingly, only 4 Primarch homeworlds are considered Deathworlds, and not even half of them are considered much worse than that. And all of the deathworlders are loyalists.

I don't blame Perty for just opting to nuke Vulkan. Would you want that furious Vulkan in arms distance? The answer is no.

Heck, I wonder if there wasn't a reference to that in _Godblight_ when Guilliman thought that if he challenged Perturabo, he wouldn't come down and just nuke him from orbit. x)

I absolutely love Salamanders and I'm looking forward to the eventual episode on the legion/chapter.
I honestly really like their genetic flaw. One, they appear really frightening but are nice, a great "don't judge a book by its cover" thing and the second part often gets forgotten.
Salamanders have the genetic flaw of being stubborn as fuck. The older a Salamander gets, the worse this gets as well. You first see this with Vulkan refusing to let his hunted drake go on Mount Deathfire. The Salamanders collectively insist on saving civilians and following the promethiam creed, which gives their inate thick skulls a purpose.
Fucking love the Salamanders. With their flaw and companies and all they have more going on than you'd think at first.

There's no point in trying find a scientific explanation for glowing red eyes. Eyes work by absorbing light, so having glowing eyes would be like having ears that constantly emit a high pitched buzzing sound. But hey, they look cool.

Their eyes don't fully absorb Red light, it's not that hard to explain. Same reason the sky is blue. Makes it easier to see colours that are not red. They don't glow any more than regular eyes "glow"

It also doesn't make sense for them to have such dark skin on a planet with little to no sunlight or any plants to produce oxygen with constant volcanic emissions releasing into the atmosphere choking out any other residual auction that might have been left over from an earlier age. This faction that makes some of the least sense in 40K and considering how they're such good boys and that's not really what 40K is about it kind of makes sense that they don't make any sense.

One slight thing you might want to mention about vulkan is the fact that he died last while fighting the ork (or krork) called the beast and fell into a gargant’s (ork titan’s) power source which is a huge mass of wagh energy. Which is probably why he isn’t back yet.

He's just chilling in the ork gestalt consciousness with Gork and Mork, drinking fungus beer, having arm wrestling and bench pressing contests and debating whether they should german suplex or back break the chaos gods into non-existence once they kick down the Warp's front door.
