Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) Bird Call Video | Heron Videos & Their Calls
The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is a widespread species of large wading bird found in many parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, that sticks to waterways. The Purple Heron is an expert fish, frog and reptile hunter. The Purple Heron is also a stunning looking bird, which makes them one of my favourite Heron species, especially because you do not see them that often in Southern Africa.
Purple Herons in South Africa inhabit a variety of wetland habitats including marshes, lakes, rivers, and estuaries. They prefer areas with dense vegetation where they can nest and find food.
These herons typically breed in colonies, often alongside other wading bird species. Breeding season usually occurs from September to November in South Africa, with birds constructing large stick nests in trees or reed beds.
Purple Herons are named for their striking plumage, which includes shades of purple, blue, and gray. They have long necks and legs, allowing them to wade into deep water in search of prey.
While some Purple Herons in South Africa are resident year-round, others are migratory, traveling to other parts of Africa or even to Europe and Asia during the non-breeding season.
Like many wetland-dependent species, Purple Herons face threats such as habitat loss, pollution, and disturbance. Efforts to conserve wetland habitats are crucial for the survival of these birds in South Africa and elsewhere.
Population estimates for Purple Herons in South Africa vary, but they are generally considered relatively stable. However, detailed population monitoring and conservation efforts are important for ensuring their long-term survival.
This video was taken in Dullstroom, at a place called Millstream Farm, and you can see the Purple Heron in it's natural habitat, hunting and stalking its next meal. In the background you can hear the bird call of the Purple Heron.
