So I'm a theologian/ chaplain who just graduated with a Master of Divinity degree (yay!) and I was IMMEDIATELY struck by the "And it was written, I got cursed like Eve got bitten." And I have some thoughts so bear with me:
Like you guys said Eve was not bitten by the serpent in the Genesis narrative. She was coerced by the serpent to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Gen 3:6), which was God's one stipulation for Adam and Eve to stay in the Garden of Eden: to NOT eat from the tree. The vast majority of practicing theologians believe that the Genesis narrative is clearly not written as a historical account (in the way the western world understands history) but rather was an oral narrative passed from generation to generation and eventually written down as a way for the ancient Israelites (monotheists) to maintain their identity while living in Babylonian exile (a polytheistic empire). That being said, the Genesis narrative is about demonstrating why the world is the way it is. Why do we wear clothes and not walk around naked? Why is life on earth so hard sometimes? Why is our God different from the gods of Babylonia? etc.
Taylor's entire thesis of the song The Prophecy (at least from my understanding) is basically saying maybe I'm not the problem and maybe you're not the problem, maybe it was written in the stars from the beginning that I am doomed to be alone. So in a sort of groundhogs-day-esq situation, I am doomed to repeat having my heart broken over and over again no matter how many times I try and change the prophecy. Hence why she continually asks throughout the song "change the prophecy" and "who do I have to speak to about if they can redo the prophеcy?"
It's not really about being cursed. Eve was not actually cursed, she was a victim to the prophecy set in motion: that human beings will choose other things over God. Our poor misogynistic interpretation of scripture has led us to believe that Eve is the bearer of all sin and shame (a perspective that has obviously been used to oppress women for centuries), but Adam also meets Eve with the serpent and also eats from the fruit as well. He is equally tempted.
Anyway, that being said, what I believe Taylor is masterfully saying is that throughout the centuries people have assumed that Eve had this venomous curse running through her, passed from woman and woman, because of her entanglement with the serpent due to a decision she made. Curses don't just happen, you have to do something to set them in motion. But, the curse of the Garden of Eden is placed onto Eve who, while yes making the decision to eat the fruit, is really just a victim of the prophecy that, giving humanity a choice (something that is portrayed as a loving act on Gods part) to either chose to stay in the garden or be tempted with more, humanity will struggle with always wanting something other than God.
That being said the curse is not really a curse, just as Eve was not actually bitten. There is a larger divine prophecy at play that can never be unwritten, she is just doomed to repeat it over and over and over again. Taylor also plays with this idea of divine femininity in the song "Peter". "My ribs get a feeling she did" when referring to the "goddess of timing" is a reference to a Biblical way of understanding feminine intuition not coming from our gut, but rather from our ribs as woman was born as the final climatic act of creation, in the second creation narrative, through God plucking one of Adams ribs.
I apologize for this long explanation but I found this line so incredibly compelling and interesting. As someone who studies religion and works in religious spaces I have adored Taylor's use of religious metaphors on this album. She has done her homework and it is absolutely brilliant!

Swifties who like the 1975 want 1989 to be about Matty, but Taylor didn’t meet Matty until 1 month after she released 1989

I’m agnostic about whether she wrote about him on 1989 but there is apparently an interview where he said in 2013 she invited the 1975 to open for her red tour and they had to decline. So they may have been in communication much earlier than they were first publicly seen interacting with one another

  • @Vimge4

Thank you for pointing out that this album is about TAYLOR and as fun as it can be to speculate, we only really can know so much, so... can we PLEASE just enjoy a good song (or all of the great ones we got on TTPD) without having to assign a song to any particular guy at all times? "I hate it here" is definitely one of my faves!! I have really been trying to interpret this song from an objective point of view, looking for the bigger message, or how it connects to other concepts already touched upon on other songs in the album. I am probably tripping a bit, but here's what I came up with so far.
When listening to this album, I keep thinking of the idea of romanticism (being a poet) vs the reality (a department) of how things actually play out in real life. The 2nd song (TTPD) is the perfect example of how in choosing to live/love a "tortured poet," while fully aware of that they are really "modern idiots", the story is told in the most romantic (who is going to hold you like me?) in conjunction to some of the least romantic/ most matter of fact lyrics, almost in a way to emphasize the contrast between the two.
So I have been trying to look at "I hate it here" from this same perspective: the "romantic" in conflict with the "realist" in the narrator. She starts by pleading with a regular/modern person (finance guy) to tell her something as if he was a poet (romanticism), so she can relate to something/someone on her "here" (reality). He is not a poet (or maybe he is only the best she can hope for) so he can only be a "consolation prize." She furthers elaborate that she was once "a debutant" (again the idea of romanticism, being the heroine of the story, etc.), but now is like she either knows better (has grown up? unlike "Peter"?) or has to accept her real life, thus being "afraid to go outside." However, as matured or realist as she can make herself to be (comfort is a construct), deep down she knows she needs romanticism. So she escapes reality by going inside her mind (a very romantic idea). The "lunar valleys" and "secret gardens" only she has access to. The romantic is inside herself, not necessarily on her romantic relationships. She furthers plays with romanticism vs realism using the concept of nostalgia by pointing out how we all have a tendency to romanticize the past. She says she would like to go back to the 1830's, but she knows that realistically, the past was never really any better. No matter the decade, the "here" (reality) sucks (and she hates it). She admits that she feels worthless and in order to survive living in her reality, she pretends ("i swear I'm fine"). She escapes reality through the worlds (secret gardens) she creates in her mind. Only in her mind she can find the romanticism she longs for in real life ( "I save all of my romanticism for my inner life"), because the realist in her knows that she can no longer be truly a romantic in her reality (real life experiences) anymore.
    Thanks for the video!

This album is about the feelings Taylor felt when she was with certain persons. It’s closure for her, this album is not for everyone, is for her and her longtime loyal fans. Just saying 💁🏻‍♀️

54:19 yep. This is also why Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me hits us so hard. She is relatable to A LOT of people and so much of her experience is universal, but By Taylor’s own admission, no one’s prouder to be a millennial than she is. She really is embodying so much of the millennial female experience and because of the nature of her writing, it feels like she’s exposed our personal diaries because we’ve lived so many of her eras together in the same culture.
