- Ed Pink has been a prominent engine builder since 1960 having conquered NHRA INDYCAR USAC and IMSA with his legendary engines. One engine Ed is known for is the iconic Ford 427 SOHC (Single Overhead Cam) or CAMMER V8 used in NHRA competition during the glory days of Garlits, Prudhomme, and others. At age 92 Ed has just finished his FINAL engine build and it is a Ford SOHC 427. We sit down with him to hear his firsthand account of being approached by Ford in 1966 to build these engines for public sale and develop a competitive drag racing program for Lou Baney and Don Prudhomme. Ed Pink is truly a living legend and one of the last living members of the pioneer generation for motorsports in the world.

There are a lot of questions about this engine that are left unanswered. As far as I can find NASCAR banned the SOHC and OHV Hemi in 1965 not 1964 . It opens the question about the 1963 430 Chevy mystery engine that never came in a production car and some say that only 20 existed bit it was allowed to run the entire year . It was far faster than any other brand but had problems lasting a 500 mile race . Anyway there are aftermarket blocks today that are strong enough to make a modern SOHC reliable. Amazing that the Fe engine is still.popular as a true Hot Rod engine and the improvements continue .

He cracked the Bosch Motronic injection system computer, changed the cams added new engine coating tech and squeezed another rumored 150 hp HP out of the flat six!
Ed's engines smoking past the high budget, factory Porsches on the high speed banks of Daytona at the 24 was GOD tier!
Ford Engineers should be forced to go sit with Ed Pink for a week and Q & A him.... What an amazing man!
This probably will be the last testament of this man's knowledge. Thank you for interviewing him/hanging out.

The legend himself. I hope that when I am 92 my mind is still that sharp. The amount of knowledge that he has gained over his lifetime is so immense that it would take many many episodes even to begin to scratch the surface. He still has the passion today as when he started and you can hear it in his voice. Do as many videos as it takes to preserve this automotive history and teach the world of just how much genius these individuals from this era possess. Keep doing this.

I couldn't tell you how many engines in the 70's were Ed Pink, but I can tell you they won a lot of races and sounded better than everyone else. God bless this Man. He's a Treasure who will never be forgotten.

My Dad who passed away back in 2001 used to say the same thing Ed said, my mind says I can do it but my body says no you can't. Those words bring back a flood of memories about the times my Dad and I spent in the garage together.
This man is amazing. I'm 72 and have tinkered with Fords all my life. But I have Parkinson's from Agent Orange I got in Vietnam. I still have the yarn to play with my 70 Mach 1 I have had for 50 years now but my body just won't let me. Ed is so lucky. His mind is better than mine and he's 20 years older. I am so envious. Keep on goin Ed.

I remember as a teenager going to Panarama City / Van Nuys next to the RR tracks and hear those thundering cars doing burn outs down the street. One of the guys doing the burn outs was Pat Foster and when I started my career in professional racing I got to work with him and told him that story and that’s how I found out that he was there. I’m now 62 and semi retired!

Old stomping grounds spent many nights on VN blvd, super shops back in the day. Lived behind the Arbys there. Man i got in a lot of trouble lol.
Fun fact, Don Garlits was trying to break the 426 to go back to his beloved 392's, because he thought it wouldn't be as good, it never worked in his opinion, so he deliberately tried to spark knock it into oblivion. Turned out the more timing he put to it, the faster it would go. This was said by the man himself in an interview

He stopped at 60 degrees because it was kicking like a mule, 75 degrees is absolutely insane!
That is one main reason why I love the FE so much, it is so much like the 392. Just a sturdy 2500 hp block. If you dry deck fill it , you can get it to take 5000 hp, and there was a Dove dry deck that could live under the Cammer at 8000. But time marches on. Bill Coon was making stuff a few years ago. Ed Pink the man, the legend!!!

I was expecting a really old school build, but Ed’s clearly moved with the times, and his crank and cam position sensor solutions are so elegant! Having an ex Cosworth engineer on call to design your ITB injection setup is the dream.

I'm an older guy,,I remember as an kid seeing the front engined dragsters with the engine by Pink on them. IMO, this man is truly a legend.

Ed Pink is a National Treasure. His knowledge and sense of humor shine through is if it's the mid-60s.
I'm not into drag racing. I'm not even American, but this video appeared in my feed and because I like cars, I watched it. Without taking anything away from modern engineers, men like Mr Pink are rare indeed. It truly is like going back in time when guys were pioneering engineers and improving on what they had. He is a true inspiration to all, no matter what job you do. And when retirement comes, stay as busy as your health allows you to be.
Ed is an absolute treasure. He remembers more information than most books could ever teach you.

As a kid in high school I was fortunate to get to know Ed Pink and see his shop! Not many geeks in school ever had such a chance! Grew up in Woodland Hills and went to high school with his daughter, my in to being able to have the chance. The man is a living legend a I had an experience I will never forget! God Speed Ed Pink, "The Silver Fox" as known by his family and friends! BTW I'm now 68.
I had a similar experience with a gentleman named Al Moody. He built an engine for my project and it was amazing listening to his stories of working on GT40s and Ford racing engines from the 60s. I'm a Ford guy and Ford engines are the only ones for me because of the history guys like Ed Pink and Al Moody provided. Thanks for this video!!!

EXCELLENT Interview...back in 1970 (I was 8 years old) my dad had a business around the corner from his dyno shop and a few times a day you would hear the AWESOME sound of a Ed Pink Engine being run..still hear it my head...also I met him at OCIR way back then and he was such a nice humble guy that loved to talk to us youngsters about engines...good times thank you for this interview!!

My mom worked for Ed Pink around1970 as his book keeper. I was only around 8-9 years old but still have great memories of meeting Ed and being around drag racing. My mom later worked for DiMarco boats so drag boat racing became part of my life. I feel so blessed. Ed is and always has been a genius!!!

I had the opportunity to meet Ed, and anyone else in the San Fernando Valley who made horsepower as a 30 year old Sunnen Field Engineer in the late 80s and early 90s.
The things that I saw Ed doing were incredible! His dyno, aside from the usual electronic meters, had a huge array of analog meters. I really enjoyed this content. God bless Ed!
I have nothing but respect for Ed Pink he falls into a category of men like Keith Black, Don Garliets, Parnell Jones, Tommy Ivo and the list goes on. When these guys are gone the mold will be broken. Kids today don't even know what points condenser, jet drills, main jets air jets, SOHC means. I remember his shop in Van Nuys. So great seeing this. I still have the tool to remove the value springs from Ford flatheads that my late Dad used to hop up his '32 Ford. My Dad's car would put out so much horse power back then he started breaking axles, the crankshafts would flex and break because there wasn't enough main bearings. Those were the days. Great love for that stuff right along side of my late wife ❤

Would really like to see in the future a Video of either the Herb Mccandless Museum/Shop in NC (I believe his Museum is the ole Sox & Martin shop), the Big Daddy Don Garlits Museum in FL, or the Ohio George Montgomery Speed Shop in OH (the oldest operating performance shop in the USA, & it feels like a Museum)

I have a 417 Donavon that Ed built for my Dad... been on a startup stand since 99'... I broke my neck and my back in June 14th of 99'. Stopped it all in 05'. Started it last month... shook the whole city block!!!

I'm now 67 years old, formally educated in Automotive Technology and engine machine work. Rebuilt my first engine at 16, a 65 Bug. I have now rebuilt everything from 671 Detroit to Stihl chain saw, stock and race. Will most likely continue till I die. Great to see Ed still going. Your videos have increased my learning curve, Thank You.

The reason we don't have guys like this anymore is because of not having interns that will literally do the job for free just to learn how to be the best. I’m also a lifetime member of the FE family. 390s were what I raced and I have a deep appreciation for the guys inside who made it happen. Thank you Mr. Pink! I have gotten 700 hp N/A from my 390 .030 over I am blind now and can’t see well enough to drive. I truly miss the 8000 rpm runs. Thank you sir for the opportunity to learn from you.

I turned 60 this year. My body is slowing down but have plenty of energy. Started playing guitar for church praise band. Keeps challenging my mind as I’m still earning and still working.

To kind of take you there, ( the 392 era ), there was a staggering amount of cumulative knowledge . The main thing was how much lead the Early Model would take . Everybody and I mean everybody knew the '92 would barely make one run above a certain number, I think it was 36° degrees . This made just about everybody' reluctant to go beyond this in the 426 . Finally Garlits threw caution to the wind, and the rest is history .
