In 1968 mom and dad took me to Universal for the studio tour. I had just turned 12. We saw the cowboy stunt men shootout, the soundstage for the Shirley MacLaine musical “Sweet Charity” and Lana Turner’s dressing room. The most memorable event for me: I got my picture taken with Al “Grandpa Munster” Lewis!

It has changed for the worse, even since I was a kid in the eighties. I traveled there thoughtout my youth to visit family and there were areas to avoid, even back then. You have to be very rich to live in Southern California, or you can't live there. I watch silent films that shot on location in Los Angeles. It was mostly undeveloped lots. The ranches and orange groves are gone. All of the beauty that attracted people to move to Los Angeles is gone. No wonder people are scrambling to leave. I live in North Carolina, and the people from California who move here say how much they love it here, they can buy a mansion for what a flat would cost to buy.

Walt designed Disneyland's entry as an idealized fantasy of "the good old days" in the USA, fifty years earlier. At the time of the opening, there would've been visitors who had actually lived during that period. Moving up to today, this would be comparable to creating a version of the 1970s, which were 50 years ago now. That's a bizarre contrast to consider.

I'd like to correct something said in this: Walt Disney was a visionary, to be sure, however, it was his brother, Roy, who was the savvy businessman.
In addition to what hebneh below stated and in response to the general theme of moviemaking in this video.......as you enter Disneyland and pass under the left (specifically) archway under the train, it is meant to resemble the opening scene of a film, as your vision of Main Street USA widens.

Lots of cool history in these videos. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in Hollywood and in the early-mid 70's I used to go to Magic Mountain and Universal Studios for $5. I didn't even go to Disneyland until I was 10 or so and pretty sure it was more than $5. Now it is cheaper to own Disneyland stock than to go there.

Hollywood was Hollywood Land nothing to do with the movies.
Like the OutPost, a housing area.
Water rights killed over 600 people in the late 20's a damn broke killing everyone in its path. Where Magic Mountain is now. Sad.😦🙏

I know we cannot turn back time, but perhaps, Disney, your current ailment stems from just wishing for too much, all the time. Nothing can grow exponentially forever: even universes die. Make less, better. We could all use a breather.

Why in this series is there always the completely unnecessary, distracting and irritating "music" in the background?
There's no need! It's images and words that matter, not piiiinging and doooonging all the way through.

This host is so annoying, he's no Huell Howser or Ralph Story, and the content is so banal. A great effort as a high school video project though. Caruso is no Walt Disney...Disney sought to invite people in, Caruso designs to exclude. He's done that quite well in Palisades Village.

Huell Howser's visit to Warner Bros studio conveys the days of movie-making as well as any piece I've seen. Huell's enthusiasm for his subjects is a large part of the charm of his videos. He even managed to enthuse over pigs' ears cooked in various ways.
